year of death?[edit]

There are two sentences which appear to be at odds to me.

"In 54, as candidate for the consulship..." and then "He died about the year 49..."

I'd either like an explanation for how he was a candidate for consulship 5 years after he died, or for this mistake to be corrected somehow.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:100A:B000:2BE:35DA:C9A3:13FF:A5D9 (talk) 05:58, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

BC is the explanation. PamD 06:53, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Title?[edit]

'Poet' seems an odd descriptor for Memmius - he certainly did write poems, but we don't have any of them, and he appears much more often in ancient sources for other reasons - either his political career or his ambiguous relationship with Lucretius. To have written poetry was not unusual for a Roman with a political career - Cicero, Caesar and Augustus all did it, and we don't append their articles with (poet).

What would be the view of a title change to e.g. 'Gaius Memmius (praetor 58 BC)'? UndercoverClassicist (talk) 14:26, 19 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
