Proposed move[edit]

I propose moving this page to a title that more accurately reflects the various names of the breed, such as Caballo de Pura Raza Gallega (PRG), Caballo Gallega de Monte, Faca Gallega and so on. I don't know what that title should be, but it should not include the word 'pony' as this breed is considered a horse in its homeland. Any suggestions?

I disagree that this breed is always considered a horse. Per both the Spanish and the Galician language versions, it is also known as "pony gallego" (Galician pony), and it tops out in height at around 140 cm, which equals around 14 hands, which is pony sized. All English language sources that I have seen refer to it as the Galician pony, and I don't see a clear preference in the native language for one over the other. Per WP:UE, Wikipedia naming policy states that "The choice between anglicized and local spellings should follow English-language usage,". Dana boomer (talk) 18:07, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bad coat color[edit]

I've changed the coat to bay. There is a problem with "false friends" translating horse coats from English to Spanish (or related languages), and the original author seems to have fallen into. On most cases (eng.) chestnut is the equivalent to (spa.) "castaño/a" but not for horse coats. The actual translation table is

Spanish English
castaño Bay (horse)
alazán Chestnut (coat)
bayo Isabelline (colour)

The last one may (IIRC) not be an exact correlation but is the one used in Wikipedia --Wllacer (talk) 18:27, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

And what happens when the source (or most of them) is in material error? Even a minimum knowledge of Spanish or Galician -or looking at the photos at all the sources makes the mistake at the Oklahoma University obvious. It's a pity that the Hendricks decided to declare the breed extinct and only allow for a Garrano mixed subvariety ... Finding an english source independent from Oklahoma or us seems difficult; at least for me now that i'm on the sick bed. I've found a source (not that i agree very much) but seems to be banned by wikipedia www.helium.com/items/1524040-galician-pony-breed ¿Can you manage that banning stuff?

This is the Official Text of the Stud Book and Standard Regulation for the breed, which should end any controversy and trump any other source. Point 6.1 of the Annex (emphasis mine)

El caballo de pura raza gallega agrupa animales de perfil recto o subcóncavo. elipométricos y de proporciones sublongilíneas. Con una alzada a la cruz de 120 a 140 cm. Presentan capa castaña o negra ...

The text in bold reads correctly translated Show bay or black coat Btw. exclusively. It means a galician pony of chesnut coat could not be registered on the stud book .--Wllacer (talk) 20:41, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Provide better sources. That's all that's needed. I agree that Okie State and Hendricks parallel each other and do often contain errors, but there are usually other sources in English that can be accessed. Put up the proper link and if it's in Spanish, provide a precise translation. Source it in a way that we can verify and we'll be happy. Montanabw(talk) 16:07, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Montana: I got at last an usable english source, and with a lot of interesting info for its shortness. OTOH I added as further reading the link to the official standard. Even translating just the whole paragraph I cited above gives me nightmares, too full of technical stuff :-( --Wllacer (talk) 20:19, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And the link is...? (If Yahoo, we can't use Yahoo per WP:RS. Montanabw(talk) 22:23, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
