earlier comment[edit]

Check the Scotch web-page: - to make it comparable - there is a need for more well placed items about history, perhaps not so much about notorious alumni ?? User:SatuSuro 10:43, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well done![edit]

The article has recently been improved greatly. Auroranorth 09:27, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Merger[edit]

Merge discussion moved to Talk:Guildford Grammar Preparatory School to keep it all together. I suggest future comments be recorded there to keep it all in one place. Thanks. —Moondyne 13:02, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ggs[edit]

hey, i was wondering if they owened the rights to the acronym "GGS" (or for that matter, does anybody?) Bud0011 17:08, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would say with almost absolute certainty - No. See GGS. —Moondyne 03:55, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

References[edit]

Everything that is in the article should be referenced (except the lead - unless extraordinary claims are made), here are some things that need to be referenced:

  • 1896 founding
  • Enrollment figures
  • Tallest structure statement (history)
  • Alumni section
  • Trivia section on the GGS Chapel page
  • House system - various cups, boarding houses.
  • Co curricular activies

All facts must be referenced - you cant just say - "i go to GGS - i know this", the truth is - you prob know it is correct, but it must be backed up by a verifiable source (preferrably from outside the school) Aquinas College, Perth is a good example to look at. Smbarnzy 03:44, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. The only 'references' here are the schools website and 3 directory entries from associations its a member of. Not good. I suggest tagging areas which need citations with {{cn}}. —Moondyne 03:55, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not discuss other articles (namely this) on this page, as it's just not the place. To let you in on a secret: There are no references to the following subjects:
  • 1896 founding (unless you count unreadable sources. This is 'the lead' and 'extraordinary claims' are not made.
  • Enrollment figures
  • Trivia section (not referenced anywhere, not even the Heritage Register)
  • House System
  • Co-curricular activites (A direct quote may be taken from the coordinator, but that wouldn't count, would it?)

I have seen the Aquinas College, Perth page, and not everything is referenced, but most things are. Most pages do not have everything referenced. [example], a link from the Aquinas College, Perth article, chosen at complete random. Auroranorth 11:43, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Try very hard despite the obvious taunts - to not involve in point by point argumnents about aquinas. Guildford has something like 4 times the refs at henrietta than aquinas - try finding a book.... SatuSuro 11:46, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, where it that dead-link in the AC, Perth article, i cant find it? Smbarnzy 06:08, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some References[edit]

Although alot of these are primary sources, its better than nothing - the names before are only suggested, but they provide valuable information:

  • 1896 Founding - [1]
  • Student Numbers - [2]
  • Headmaster - [3]
  • History section and coat of arms - [4]
  • History - [5]
  • Fees - [6] - possibly for the infobox - this is important and must be referenced!
  • House System - [7] - im not sure if this is boarding or day houses - check it out.
  • Miscellanious - [8]

Also:

  • This OneCampus project seems to be a pretty big thing at guildford and should probs be added into the article somewhere, maybe with a diagram
  • The Swan Backissues - this is a doco published by the school and might be valuable to the article [9] this is on a pick-up only basis.

If you need any other help, feel free to msg me - Smbarnzy 06:04, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The above references are simply lifts from a single web site - and not particular much use for proper referencing of an article - as the conventions of referencing require external third party sources (ie not the school web site) for corroborative information from external soursing to satisfy WP:V and WP:N - for adequate defence against the usual arguments from good reviwers - the comment its better than nothing ignores the fact of what a more thorough referencing of an article requires within current wikipedia standards, and the use of a single web site is not general practice - and should never be encouraged SatuSuro 07:49, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But, if you cant find external sources for these claims/facts on the school, then doesnt that mean that the article could be in violation of WP:N? I think this article deserves to stay, but where else can we get references for it? ive done a quik google search and it isnt too promising... Smbarnzy 08:15, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This message will be answered later at the users talk page as it will have little to do with Guildford Grammar School article in compliance with what talk page headers ask of editors discussions at talk page SatuSuro 09:40, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New contributor[edit]

Just to let everyone know, I'm here to take over from Auroranorth as Wikipedia's resident Guildford Grammar School student. I've been editing for a while on my (ever-changing) IP address, and I decided to go all the way because Auroranorth got blocked for lying. I know him at school and he's rather loserish - but he got blocked for lying about pictures - lol. Anyway, I believe I can do a better job than him, and I'll see you in the future! House System[edit]

Great idea! house system article! except i made one andit got AfD, SC has one and it didnt get AfD - confusing, but keep it up. I would now look to cut down that section or make it into paragraphs so it flows, look at SC or AC for examples. SMBarnZy 11:38, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I created this. Seventy dot 11:46, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ours got deleted! Apparently it's not notable, and the reference is not reliable... but it is notable and the Scotch College page has no references on their Houses page. Seventy dot 12:00, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template[edit]

This article has both a info box and a box of related articles, makes the introduction to the article very bulky/disorganised. I suggest that the box of related articles be made into a template (which is then placed at the bottom of this page and all of the other mentioned articles). This would improve the layout/structure of the article. Wikipedia:Template messages. For an example see University College London and Template:University College London. Article Grading[edit]

SatuSuro's opinion![edit]

Needs more history - like big school! SatuSuro 10:45, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I added a cleanup tag because the article really needs a re-write. The info is good, but it is disjoint. Also, what the heck is 'D&T'? Development and training? Is it mean to be 'E&T' being to 'technology and enterprise' which is what they say on their home page? I will try to take a photo next time I go past. Rob 02:54, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello? D+T is Design and Technology (building stuff) Auroranorth 14:10, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

What is the redirect for?[edit]

This article is about Guildford Grammar School, not the preparatory school. What happend to the original article contents? If the original article contents are still intact, then there is no need for the redirect, and if they are not, it is whoever put the redirect in's responsibility to restore the information about the Senior School back to it's former glory.

Which redirect?[edit]

The Preparatory School (the longer and more detailed article, may I add) is commonly called 'GGPS', so if you are talking about that, that isn't NPOV and it does not reflect a concensus.

Merger[edit]

Article grading[edit]

Im not sure that this article is of "Mid-Importance" - due largely to the fact that it is the Senior school that is of any importance within the Western Australian community, in my opinion the article is Low Importance, but the senior school is of Mid Importance. Smbarnzy 13:28, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Correct. This is an Australia-specific rating. In the context of encyclopaedic coverage of Australia as a whole, this article is mindbogglingly insignificant. Changed to low. Hesperian 13:32, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely not B-class - 4 references, all of which are self-references, and an unresolved citation needed tag. Downgraded to Start - sorry. DanielT5 18:05, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

Are there any sources for this school that aren't published by the school. I mean I have to question just how notable this place is if the only people writing about it work there. IvoShandor 12:29, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

tis notable ay, its part of psa. SMBarnZy 12:33, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Am not familiar with "psa." I guess Perth is big enough to merit articles on its schools, the low enrollment just made me wonder along with the lack of secondary sources. IvoShandor 12:41, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But it's not in Perth, nevermind. I don't care. It would just be nice to see some more independent sources that's all I am saying. IvoShandor 12:43, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is in Perth! I attend this school! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Seventy dot (talkcontribs) 11:55, 17 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]
Unfortunately, the school website agrees with seventy dot :) GGS IS IN PERTH! SMBarnZy 12:19, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Me confused. Is Guilford then part of Perth? Because U.S. suburbs are separate municipalities, so I lack context.IvoShandor 14:25, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Guildford is a suburb of Perth. IMO this preparatory school is not notable. —Moondyne 14:37, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The way Australian cities work, you have a city with a metropolitan area which contains suburbs - our statistical agency, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, as well as Departments of Local Government in each state, have decided the boundaries. It's used by state government authorities for planning purposes. Perth has a radius of about 60 kilometres (37 mi), about the same as Melbourne and Sydney, and larger than other cities. Merger - April 2007[edit]

Notablie alumni[edit]

Please note whether it is a prime minister, muso or dustbin collector - unless it is linked to an established article - red link additions will be reverted! SatuSuro 09:54, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

campus size[edit]

The lead says 100 acres. The history section says 100 ha. Which is correct? If both, the someone needs to explain why the size was reduced. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:34, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Minor tweak[edit]

Have cleaned up some references to the founding of the school. The original text repeated itself, so have merged the paras'- Noted issues with grammar and spelling - Chops,Piggy and VJB would not be impressed! 500 words for you all!!!Sulzer55 (talk) 01:38, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Error on page[edit]

Hi there,

I'm not a wiki editor and don't want to mess anything up, so I thought I would leave a message about a factual error. The statement "Initially established as a single-sex school for boys..." is incorrect.

My great grandmother Enid and her sister Frederica, among other ladies, were students from 1896 (the year the school was founded) to 1899. Thanks for posting, that is interesting. I can't find anything in online newspapers of the time that we could use to support this, but hopefully someone following this article will have access to one of the books about the school's history and can add this.
