Untitled[edit]

Could anyone help me insert a photo of HMS Affray? I am unsure of the copyright situation re same. (Khan 09:40, 19 January 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Probably the best thing to do would be to e-mail the navyphotos.co.uk site and ask what their position is on copyright and/or whether they would mind Wikipedia using it. I seem to remember some images from that site being tagged for removal but I can't recall why. If the image was produced by the UK Government before 1956 then it should be public domain by now and usable anyway.
If not and there are problems, then the image should still be usable under 'fair use' but it will need reducing in size and degrading somewhat - if this needs doing then leave a message on my talk page and I'll edit the Affray image and upload it - unless of course, you want to do it yourself. Image[edit]

I would be very grateful if you could do this! I have attempted to do this before on another article & encountered all sorts of problems. I think the part under the crew list needs to be re-aligned as well, & I am not an experienced enough wikipedian to do so.(Khan 01:26, 31 January 2006 (UTC))[reply]

I have added the image to the page under 'fair use'. I haven't done anything about the white glare in the picture as I'm not sure if it's a photographic flaw or the submarine's diesels starting. Dry Inside?[edit]

I have stated that HMS Affray is possibly still partly dry inside, I have heard conflicting opinions by two experts. Does anyone have any idea if after almost 60 years it would be fully flooded or not?(Khanada 04:30, 30 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Suez Crisis[edit]

At the time Affray went missing it was such big news in Britain it relegated the Suez Crisis to page two of the national newspapers.

Interesting, you are correct, I never thought about the actual date, I copied this information from a book I read, but there are other links on the net whick indicate same. I could not find any other event involving suez in 1951, I will have to do more research re same. (Khanada 08:27, 10 July 2006 (UTC))[reply]

What did happen on the same date was Iran took over the Anglo-Iranian oil company and for some reason this is actually considered the begining of the Suez crisis which culminated in the events of 56.(Khanada 13:04, 10 July 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Why left down there?[edit]

Why wasn't this submarine raised? I mean 86 meters depth is not particularly difficult, huge german warships have been raised at Scapa Flow already back in the 1930's, the british had a lot of salvaging experience. In fact they could have refurbished it after the raise and have it serve again, as immoral as it sounds. Yet a big submarine was an important and expensive asset at the height of early Cold War (while Korean War was going on and Stalin in power).

I have wondered that myself, the Royal Navy certainly had the ability to do it and as they had other Amphion boats in service an inspection of Affray may have saved another of the same type from a simliar disater.(Khanada (talk) 02:57, 15 December 2007 (UTC))[reply]

My brother in law was a seaman on board the affray(Michal Barlow)He was a sharp shooter,trained to shoot at mines and blow them up.When the affray set sail for the last time,he was replaced by a sailor who had two children so that he could attended a shooting compertition.He is alive today(2010) while all his shipmates and his replacement died all those years ago. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.17.236.146 (talk) 14:41, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Tapping" heard[edit]

Differing sources contradict each other over the tapping sound; one states it was morse code saying "we are trapped at the bottom", the other states it was thought to be from the trapped submariners, makes no reference to morse code or any message conveyed and concludes it to be from other boats. These could refer to different noises detected separately, but it seems unlikely and I have been unable to find any sources that clarify this.
