Niobium Link[edit]

I'm not too savvy (read: unwilling) to make an edit myself, but I noticed that the article points out that an IAMGOLD mine is one of the few producers of niobium in the world. I think this could use a link to the niobium article itself; it's fairly unknown, and an interesting tidbit I think! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.10.136.168 (talk) 20:48, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IamgoldIAMGOLD – The proper incorporated name of this company is all uppercase "IAMGOLD". Please see this legal corporate document:[1] on page 13. mmorel 00:00, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

  • Oppose per MOS:TM, MOS:CAPS, MOS:ABBR, and WP:NCCAPS. This is not an acronym. The correct title will depend on what this name means. If it's a stylization of "I Am Gold", and the company consistently runs it together we should use camelcase as IAmGold. If the "IAM" part is an acronym (e.g. for the founders' initials or something), then it would probably be IAMGold. It could even be a word, iam, in one language or another (most likely Latin), so "IamGold" could also apply. Regardless, we do not force upper-case on trademarks to mimic logos (thus Sony not "SONY"); same goes for forcing all-lowercase, e.g. Macy's not "macy's" (much less "macys").  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  02:34, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Update: The current name (Iamgold) is actually fine, and is the dominant stylization in news sources that, like WP, do not reflexively immitate trademarks [1].  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  02:39, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Further update: The "IAM" part is an acronym for "International African Mining"; the full company name is (or at least was) International African Mining Gold Corporation. So, IAMGold is probably what we actually want.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  03:22, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose—per SMcCandlish. All-caps is just commercial boosterism, and doesn't make it any easier for our readers to parse. Tony (talk) 02:50, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose – If it really was an acronym then maybe, but it's a name from a partial acronym, a made-up word, and many sources don't dignify it by the all-caps treatment, so neither do we, per the guidelines cited. Dicklyon (talk) 03:10, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I don't find IAMGold in sources, logical as it seems, but Iamgold is common enough, so let's stick with that. Dicklyon (talk) 04:04, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose and speedy close next editor please. In ictu oculi (talk) 08:22, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Proposed resolution - Considering the comments from editors above, in addition to consideration to the actual legal name of the company, can we do the following: 1) The "name" tag in the infobox, let's use the formal company name: IAMGOLD Corporation; 2) In the very first paragraph, let's use the formal name too: "IAMGOLD Corporation is a Canadian gold producer...."; 3) As article name, and everywhere in the article, let's use "Iamgold". "IAMGold" is not use anywhere in the mining literature. "Iamgold" is use sometime. Thus the latter seems more appropriate for the encyclopedia, and will be more consistent with source material. mmorel 11:17, 16 June 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by MMorel (talkcontribs)
  • Oppose as per WP:COMMONNAME and MOS:TM and other policy and guidelione pages cited above by SMcCandlish. We do not title Wkipedia articles based on The proper incorporated name of a company, or based on the official name of anything, unless that is also the commonly used name in sources. If "IAMGOLD Corporation" is actually its legal name (and not just a styling created for marketing) thenh it should be mentioned in the lead paragraph, probably in the lead sentence, of the article. It shoulod not, however, be the name in the infobox. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 18:17, 16 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Most news sources repeat the IAMGOLD styling, but not all, Iamgold is not infrequent. In introductory uses, Iamgold Corporation is not uncommon, and I think this best matches Wikipedia style. Iamgold Corporation (IAG) might be a good idea, as post-introduction, the company is called IAG. Noting https://topchronicle.com/business/2018/06/15/which-stock-will-give-more-iamgold-corporation-iag-or-pdl-biopharma-inc-pdli/ example. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:04, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Toronto Stock Exchange (trading symbol "IMG") looks to be out-competed by the New York Stock Exchange (trading symbol "IAG"), but the competition means neither is a good abbreviation for the article. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:06, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per MOS:TM. We do not bow down to the wishes of corporations and name titles based on their legal names if not common, we follow policy and guidelines. CookieMonster755 01:18, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
