Sources[edit]

I have sourced the list in accordance with Wikipedia's Original Research and Verifiability policies. Basically, anyone described by a reliable source as "Dutch" or "Dutch-American" (i.e. as opposed to "of Dutch descent", "Dutch mother", etc.) is on the list. Here are the few people I couldn't find anything for. If you have a reliable source that fits that please restore the names:

Definition[edit]

Stupid question, but what is a Dutch American? Do you have to have an American pasport or merely have to reside in the US? Because I'm not sure whether Famke Janssen, Rebecca Romijn and Jan de Bont have American pasports, and I would like to see proof of their nationality because I see them as Dutch people. --C mon 19:28, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They should def. have American citizenship to be an American. However, obviously Rebecca Romjin is American. She was born in the US, so was her mother. I don't think she has Dutch citizenship, unless she automatically gets it because of her father. I'll do a google search on Janssen and De Bont. I suspect you're right, they're not American. If I can't find anything, I'll add them to the "Dutch people who may or may not be American citizens" column above. Is there anyone else on the list who you think may not be American? Mad Jack 19:35, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There, I've moved Janssen and DeBont, as well as Paul Verhoeven up here. Google searches don't really pick up anything about them being Americans. Mad Jack 19:38, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No not really, except for Peter Stuyvesant, Wouter van Twiller and Adriaen van der Donck obviously because they all lived before the US was founded. --C mon 19:54, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Dutch American ought to fit to the same standard as Afro-American or Arab-American descent. Several people of Dutch descent do not have Nederland citizenship any more than Afro-Americans retain citizenship in an African country.

The user above was talking about Dutch people who were not American citizens, not American people who were Dutch citizens. As for who is or is not a Dutch American, only a reputable source can describe someone as Dutch Americans. Have some X ancestry doesn't automatically make a person X-American. Died before 1776[edit]

I've removed Theodorus Jacobus Frelinghuysen, Peter Stuyvesant, Adriaen van der Donck and Wouter van Twiller because they all died before 1776 and therefore can never have been U.S. citizens. And therefore they can't have been Dutch Americans, because they weren't Americans C mon 22:45, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed Kiliaen van Rensselaer for the same reason. In fact, there's no evidence he ever lived in North America at all. VABaron (talk) 18:21, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Chris Van Hollen[edit]

Should Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland congressman and the son of a Dutch-born diplomat, be included in this list? Mmace91 02:22, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lukas Haas[edit]

Should actor Lukas Haas be in the list? His firstname is written in the standard Dutch way, with a K and his lastname, Haas, is also Dutch (meaning hare). Can someone varify this?--Soetermans 12:18, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Roosevelt[edit]

According to this site: http://www.netherlands-embassy.org/article.asp?articleref=AR00000379EN the roosevelts are of dutch origin. "Many prominent Americans have been of Dutch origin including three presidents: Martin van Buren, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt."

Jack Nicholson[edit]

There is no indication at all of Dutch descent of Jack Nicholson in the Wikipedia. Should he be kept in this list?--BertSen 19:23, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • A common way of handling this is to remove the name from the list and put the name in this talk page (above) where other questionable names are listed, pending further research. Hmains 20:35, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Where is the actor James Van Der Beek ? And Lee Van Cleef ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.125.176.119 (talk) 23:03, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of changes[edit]

For anyone who publishes this list: Please do not re-add anyone retire without an adequate source description of the specific person as "Dutch" or "Dutch American" or (if overlooked possible) to someone who was born in The Netherlands. [[User: | Bulldog123 Bulldog123]] ( talk) 19:15 September 13, 2008 (UTC)

Publishers, please note in the first place people who are not believed to be of Dutch origin before removal. A large number of individuals whose WP articles or references in the article, states that are of Dutch origin, but have not been removed from this article again and again without discussion or consensus. This is not an appropriate way to proceed, please speak first. Badagnani ( talk) 20:06 September 13, 2008 (UTC)

Keith Carradine, Robert Carradine, Bruce Carradine and David Carradine ,sons of John Carradine, and Ever Carradine are also Dutch-American as it descends Netherlands diamond merchant Kiliaen Van Rensselaer who settled in Albany, in the seventeenth century. - --83.53.109.138 (talk) 22:39, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fictional Characters[edit]

The page has a section for fictional characters, but no other list of ____ Americans includes fictional characters as well I don't believe they even qualify to be on the list at all. But I currently can not find a specific rule against it, should they be removed? The Editor's Apprentice (talk) 14:39, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
