Track Map[edit]

You forgot Fico!Storm05 18:23, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No it doesn't. Fico is in the track map and is the one that goes furthest west. Hurricanehink (talk) 19:54, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorttable & Firefox issue[edit]

I've been having trouble viewing this page lately, and I've tracked it down to this edit. Revisions before that fine in Firefox, but any after show up as a blank page. Is anyone else having this issue or is it just me? --Ajm81 04:41, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Weird. I have Firefox, and mine is fine. Hurricanehink (talk) 04:42, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like there was a problem with my personal .js file. It works fine when I log out. Strange how it worked till recently. --Ajm81 05:11, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ioke and Paka[edit]

I don't think that Ioke and Paka were "retired" the same way Pauline and Iniki were. Here's why:

Consider this National Weather Service Instruction. On page one, it lists several of the old CPac names and their replacements. Notice how a few of the changed names were not used, including Iwa's replacement name, Io. The names that were used and are being changed are: Hana, Hali, Ioke, Li, Nele, Oka, Peke, Paka, Uleki, and Wila. If they are retiring these names for notability I'd like to have a chat with whoever defined notability. If they are retiring Paka for damage and deaths in the Pacific, why are they leaving Oliwa, which was just as bad a typhoon? If they're retiring Hali for being an off-season storm, why are they leaving Ekeka in, which was stronger and also out-of-season?

Consider this NOAA Press Release: Way down in the eleventh paragraph, it says the following:

A revised list of Hawaiian tropical storm/hurricane names has been created for the central Pacific and will be used for the first time during the 2007 hurricane season. The list is a collaborative effort between the CPHC and the University of Hawaii Hawaiian Studies Department to ensure the correct meaning and appropriate historical and cultural use of the Hawaiian names.

In other words, the list was changed to make the names have better meanings and better match Hawaiian culture. I think its just a coincidence that Ioke happened to form the year before replacement and be notable for several reasons. I think that Ioke would have been changed to Iopa no matter what happened, even if it had been a storm like Alika in 2002. Basically, Ioke being notable and Ioke being changed to Iopa are coincidental and had nothing to do with each other.

Hence, Paka and Ioke should be removed from this list and from the template.Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 06:31, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A while back I emailed the CPHC, and I got this response.

Dear Mr. Hink,

Before the start of the 2007 tropical cyclone season, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center worked with members of the University of
Hawaii Hawaiian Studies Department to ensure all of the Hawaiian names on our lists were proper words and didn't have any negative
connotations.

As a result of this review and collaboration, CPHC changed 15 names from the 4 lists published for the 2006 season. If you go to
http://www.ofcm.gov/nhop/07/nhop07.htm Chapter 3, page 3-11, the name in italics are the ones we changed.

1. Ioke was retired because it was such a significant system, but also because it was an incorrect Hawaiian word. So you can
considered it retired, but it would have been removed if it hadn't been retired because it had no Hawaiian meaning.
2. Paka was retired because of the destruction it caused in Guam in 1997.
3. We requested several names from the eastern Pacific including Daniel, Emilia, Estelle, Fabio, Gilma, Guillermo, Jimena, John,
Jova, and Kenneth to be retired, but the World Meteorological Organization Region IV Tropical Cyclone Committee (WMO RA IV TCC)
decided not to retire any of these, so they were not changed.
4. For Hurricanes Fico and Fefa, in 1978 and 1991 respectively, I am not sure whether they were retired or removed. Please contact
Lixion.A.Avila@noaa.gov at the National Hurricane Center who works with the WMO RA IV TCC on the retirement or removal of names from
the lists for the eastern Pacific.

Best Regards and Aloha,
Jim Weyman
Director Central Pacific Hurricane Center

I did this while I was doing the retired Pacific hurricane articles, so that is why I included Ioke and Paka. --♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 06:36, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. BTW, did you ask Mr. Avila about Fico and Fefa? Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 06:44, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, I forgot to, since I always feel like I will be bothering them too much. --♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 06:46, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hazel: No known effects...or devastating Mexican cyclone?[edit]

I always thought the idea that Hazel did nothing but was retired was kind of strange, so I went on Hurricane Archives, and also pulled the JTWC report. As it turns out, Hazel had 6 deaths to its name (maybe more) and $10 million in damages as well.

We don't know the reason Alma was removed, so it should be removed from this list or the others added. There shouldn't be any original research in a FL. Potapych (talk) 13:36, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Alma was retired because of it's damage in Central America. It was not removed. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home , User:Yellow Evan/Sandbox
The link that was cited is just to a list of names. We can't make that assumption unless there's an announcement. Potapych (talk) 18:27, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Track map needs to be updated[edit]

As Alma was retired due to damage, its track should be added to the map. As the map currently is, it would be off the edge, necessitating a complete redo. As Alma is now a GA, I bring this up here as a possible issue that might arise during a supplementary nom to add Alma to the FT. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 22:50, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, Manuel, Patricia, and Odile needed to be added. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:04, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Email[edit]

This dropped into my inbox earlier from Gary Padgett, while most of it can not be used due to speculation and OR issues its worth noting:

Hi Jason,

Yesterday I was perusing the Wikipedia pages for the EPAC and checked out a page on name retirements. I found one inaccuracy and another possible one.
(1) DOLORES / DELORES - The article stated that DELORES was used in 1991 and 1997. The variant spelling was used only in 1991--DOLORES was restored in 1997, as one can see by checking the NHC storm report and the EPAC HURDAT file.
(2) DALILIA / DALILA - The second spelling perhaps was inadvertent in 1995, but was determined to be the preferred Spanish version of 'Delilah' and for that reason left in the list for 2001 and since. I recall some correspondence with Jack Beven on that issue. I have checked several name dictionaries and 'Dalila' appears to be the more common version.
If you know who authored that page, you can pass this along. On other changes (other than the ADOLPH and ISRAEL issue), what follows is my speculation, although I think it's likely correct.
(1) KNUT - There seems to me to be little doubt this name was retired due to pronunciation ambiguities.
(2) IVA - I strongly feel this name was retired due to its great similarity to IWA - a retired Hawaiian name. Any EPAC storm is subject to wander into the CPAC region.
(3) FICO - I accidentally discovered once in a dictionary that the word 'fico' is an objectionable word in Italian. I very much suspect that is why the name was retired.
(4) FEFA - I have no idea. But the Mariner's Weather Log for 1991 listed FELICIA as the name for that year, but FEFA was used anyway. FELICIA was of course used from 1997 onward.

Knut/Adele/Fico/Fefa/Hazel vs. Iva/Isreal/Adolph[edit]

So, with Manuel being retired, Fico/Fefa/Hazel/Adele/Adolph were added to the list. I okay'd the change as I mostly agree that it is OR not to include them given that they are retired per the WMO. However, I would have preferred to see this discussed first, given that there was a bit of discussion in 2009 about removing Fico/Fefa (because this was suppose to be about storms retired due to impact, but we have no real sources that to say they were retired due to non-impact reasons), especially given that Iva and Isreal aren't on here. Why isn't Adolph on here as well? It was retired for politics reasons, but is that relevant? Not to mention the ones that the CPHC pulled (which happened in thr case of Uleki and Nele happen to be semi-important Hawaii hurricanes) in 2006. They were officially "Removed", so should those be added or no? I'd lean towards no, but in that context, is "removed" simply a synonym for "retired" or no? Given that they aren't listed by the wMO, I'd say no. YE Pacific Hurricane 05:37, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am planning to list all the names that are currently listed by HRD and/or the WMO as retired - if we have a source saying that the name was pulled for other reasons then the standard reason of death/damages then we can note it. I do not see it as a reason to ignore since we do include them in other basins (eg:PNG). Note: I was working on this in userspace before a @Cyclonebiskit: on a spur of the moment thing gazumped me and reworked the list himself.Jason Rees (talk) 13:21, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of retired Pacific hurricane names's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Referencing work[edit]

@Hurricanehink: Hello anyone that is watching this page. After randomly coming across this from WP:FL I have noticed that this list has quite a few referencing format issues. I think that means it currently fails WP:FL?. Unfortunately I don't understand the topic enough to work on it but the work should be quite simple by the looks of it. If this isn't addressed soon I may have to take it to WP:FLCR which no-one wants. I have pinged Hink as he seems to be the major contributed to this list. - Yellow Dingo (talk) 21:59, 15 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I could only see two referencing errors which were very easily dealt with - were there any more that you could see @Yellow Dingo:?Jason Rees (talk) 22:53, 15 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jason Rees: Nice work but ref 30 is just a url with no other details. - Yellow Dingo (talk) 23:14, 15 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for bringing these issues to our attention - I have caught one or two other things which I will work on over the next few days. :)

Israel[edit]

Should we add Israel to this list as it can technically be considered "retired"? It was never used, but it was planned to be used, and would count as a retired name. Leave your thoughts below. Cooper 17:01, 1 May 2018 (UTC) Cooper 17:01, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe... But not really i think we should leave it alone. Tardis459 (talk) 17:03, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Your free to edit the article @CooperScience and Tardis459:, however, we shouldn't consider Isreal a retired name unless we are planning to include those names that were also planned to be used on various lists but never used before being replaced.Jason Rees (talk) 18:24, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
True, considering that Israel was never even used, so it would be hard to do an infobox for it. Cooper 19:44, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
