Would the table be better with a column for an image of the ship say 100-150px in size? Mjroots (talk) 08:10, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A little background for passersby: options proposed for the images so far are: images aligned vertically to the right of the table (as seen here), images contained in a gallery beneath the table (as seen here), and the above suggestion of a column in the table for ship images.
I'm in favor of images aligned vertically to the right, since this provides a visual reference for readers without having to scroll to the bottom of the (rather large) table. I tried to pick images which would illustrate different rigs mentioned in the table, while roughly lining up with entry for the pictured vessel when the table is arranged alphabetically by name. It appears, however, that on some computers, the images appear separated from the table by a substantial amount of white space, and I have yet to figure out how to fix this.
I would support the image column idea, except that many of the listed schooners don't have images available, so the display would be inconsistent. I've sometimes found this visually jarring in other lists; not sure how it would look in this particular list. If the consensus opinion is for an image column, though, I'm all for it. --Fullobeans (talk) 22:19, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This link may be helpful List of U.S. National Historic Landmarks by state. It may give you some ideas and you could copy the table format to a sandbox and then modify it as needed for width, titles, etc. until you have it the way you want.Shinerunner (talk) 09:56, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added two images to the table so that you can get a better idea of what I meant. You can revert or change the image to the other side of the table if you like.Shinerunner (talk) 10:08, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I've reverted to the previous version for the time being, but I do get what you mean. And I do think having the images in the table itself is the ideal state of affairs... when there is an image for every entry on the list (like in the lovely list you mentioned). Because we haven't got pictures for a lot of these schooners, though, this list would end up looking more like this one-- which is a great list, but (and maybe I'm alone on this) I find that my eyes just glide right past the entries which lack images without even registering that they've missed something. I assume that's why so many featured lists use the images-stacked-right format. At any rate, I'm on a quasi-Wikibreak right now, so I won't be making any major changes one way or the other. --Fullobeans (talk) 20:48, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hopefully that solved the image problem for now. Rhvanwinkle (talk) 20:35, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another option could be that you use this image as a placeholder with the caption Photo Needed. It would be written like this - [Image:Camera-photo.svg|60px] <break> Photo Needed (*double brackets used and br instead of break). This would improve the layout of the list.Shinerunner (talk) 22:48, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of "notable" schooners Comment[edit]

The lead says "The following are notable schooner-rigged vessels." I suggest that the list be constrained to boats that have WP articles, as with lists of "notable" people. --Cornellier (talk) 09:54, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
