American?[edit]

It should be clearer: "American (United States)" as technically, the 'Americas' contain quite a large group of countries. That's as bad as saying 'Asia' or 'Pacific' instead of Japan even if most people think of the US first when the term 'America' is used. I removed the ambiguity. I was looking up the term 'suffragette' and followed some links in that article to get to this one, BTW. JWhiteheadcc (talk) 03:34, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Adding summaries[edit]

I came across this very important page (the Women's Suffrage Movement was one of the first major organized movements, and spanned 90 or more years - still ongoing in some nations. Added two sections to it, added names, and linked it extensively throughout the suffrage pages. Yet the key weakness of this page is that it needs summaries of each name listed (and there are more to come), with date of birth, death, and a brief description of their roles in the movement. I'll chip away at it, if anyone wants to join in, that would be very good, as it is an educational trip and during my suffrage explorations on wikipedia I've begun to create a mental map of the movement. Some nice work went into the suffrage pages, and this page is a main, if not the main, connector between them. Randy Kryn 16:49 19 May 2013 (UTC)

"Major suffrage organizations" and "Women's suffrage publications"[edit]

"Major suffrage organizations" and "Women's suffrage publications" don't belong in a "List of suffragists and suffragettes". I suggest they be moved. Hohenloh + 10:12, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Emily Davison is listed as Australian. According to information on web sites who provide biographies, she was born in Blackheath, South London. She needs to be listed under "British". Itmustberight (talk) 20:19, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of non-notable entries[edit]

An editor reverted an edit which removed several non-notable entries. Their edit summary mentioned WP:LISTCRITERIA, which seems odd because the selection criteria for certain lists is stated on WP:LISTCRITERIA, and in the case of this list, it almost certainly meets the first criteria:

Every entry meets the notability criteria for its own non-redirect article in the English Wikipedia. Red-linked entries are acceptable if the entry is verifiably a member of the listed group, and it is reasonable to expect an article could be forthcoming in the future. This standard prevents Wikipedia from becoming an indiscriminate list, and prevents individual lists from being too large to be useful to readers.

The edit in question re-inserted the following four names, all of which are the only names on the entire list without a Wikipedia article to support notability:

  • Annie Mackenzie Golding - has no other Wikipedia article linking to it, and a search for secondary sources to support notability brought back some, but not a lot.
  • Caroline Maud Wynn - has no other Wikipedia article linking to it, and a search for secondary sources to support notability brought back only trivial mention. She is not notable.
  • Margaret Robertson - is linked to by a number of Wikipedia redlinks, though it is doubtful she is the "Margaret Robertson" they are looking for. As well, two previous attempts to create the article Margaret Robertson were speedy deleted.
  • Marie H. (Moore) Forrest has no article on Wikipedia linking to it, and was added to the list unsourced.

I have deleted these entries again for lack of notability. The input of other editors would be appreciated. Magnolia677 (talk) 17:47, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Should be an easy call, names which don't have an article shouldn't be listed. Maybe ask the editors who list them to please consider writing an article about the subject. Randy Kryn (talk) 18:47, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Magnolia677: @Randy Kryn: I have a very different interpretation of the excerpted WP:CSC statement that "Red-linked entries are acceptable if the entry is verifiably a member of the listed group, and it is reasonable to expect an article could be forthcoming in the future.". The citations clearly verify that these are members of the listed group. As to whether or not a list item should be deleted because is does not have an article, I go by the WP:REDLINK editing guideline:

A red link, like this one, signifies that the linked-to page does not exist‍—‌it either never existed, or existed at some point but has been deleted. It is useful while editing articles to add a red link to indicate that a page will be created soon or that an article should be created for the topic because the subject is notable and verifiable. A study conducted in 2008 showed that red links helped Wikipedia grow. Follow-up work on this indicated that the creation of red links prevents new pages from being orphaned from the start.

In general, a red link should be allowed to remain in an article if it links to a title that could plausibly sustain an article, but for which there is no existing article, or article section, under any name. Do not remove red links unless you are certain that Wikipedia should not have an article on the subject, or if the red link could be replaced with a link to an article section where the subject is covered as part of a broader topic (see Notability – Whether to create standalone pages).

Good red links help Wikipedia—they encourage new contributors in useful directions, and remind us that Wikipedia is far from finished.

As for Margaret Robertson being speedily deleted, we all have encountered articles that did not contain the verification for establishing notability, or for other entities by the same name that were not notable. I think that we have also sometimes encountered articles that were later re-created after deletion that subsequently passed the criteria for notability & verification.

Formatting[edit]

As mentioned years ago, the list could use a filling-out of the descriptions. I have started working on editing the page, adding dates and brief descriptions focusing on their role in suffrage (and not necessarily related activities), adding women who are currently missing, and removing women who don't appear to have been directly involved in women's vote. List is getting very big[edit]

This is a huge list. It is impossible to make it truly comprehensive due to the size. In addition, I think that items like organizations and publications may be better served on their own page.
