[edit] Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. Here are some tasks you can do:

You might find these links helpful in creating new pages or helping with the above tasks: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!

  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.

Again, welcome! - UtherSRG 04:36, 27 Jan 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Henry Wilde

Cleanup tags such as the one you placed on Henry Wilde are perfectly useless if the cleanup required is not obvious. Generally, I remove them if I cannot see anything to clean up, but as the author of this article I have not done so in this case as that might be perceived as a bit WP:OWNish. Please take the trouble to state the problems on the talk page or else tag individually the items you think require attention, or, if you have just made a mistake, remove the tag. SpinningSpark 10:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

That's ridiculous, how can someone who has been on Wikipedia since 2003 with nearly 1,000 edits not know how to remove a template? You just delete it in a normal edit (the template is the text between double curly braces). SpinningSpark 15:23, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Amway advert tag

Hi, it would be useful if you could provide comments and examples of your concerns in the talk page. --Insider201283 (talk) 12:27, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

May I suggest putting your comments on the Talk:Amway page please, better to get more discussion. --Insider201283 (talk) 01:29, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Hello, could I request you follow through on the talk page? If there's no further response I'll remove the tag. --Insider201283 (talk) 09:25, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Recent "fixes" of pre-code redirect.

Hello, While I appreciate that you were trying to improve the encyclopedia, edits like your your recent changes of [[Pre-Code]] to [[Pre-Code Hollywood|Pre-Code]] are highly discouraged. Please see Wikipedia:NOTBROKEN for a full explanation.

Also {{PROD}} is for articles only. You can use WP:RfD for redirects that you would like to see deleted.

If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask me, --ThaddeusB (talk) 04:22, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (File:Dangerous Crossing 1953 DVD Cover.jpg)

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Dangerous Crossing 1953 DVD Cover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 03:23, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Inclusion/Exclusion from Article

Greetings, I am C.Kent87... If you don't mind, I'd like to ask for some help in an area you may know something about. Perhaps you can give your 2 cents to a discussion I'm involved in? Or let another know about the dispute?

In the article Castle, they have removed reference to Chapultepec Castle in the small section 'Later use and revival castles' (It has been there for two years), for various (slightly unclear) reasons. The first comment after its deletion was left on my page, here. Also, you can see the other "reasoning" for its removal at Talk:Castle/Section, which I'm involved in. The opposition goes as far as comparing Chapultepec with this "castle" [1]...

First, it was only that there wasn't an explicit source stating it as "revival castle' (User:Nev1 wanted no less than for it to state in exact terms its existence as such), but now they just don't think it warrants a mention. One user doesn't want it as a part of the article at all because "already it has an article of its own" - As if the other castles do not (?). Another 'doesn't see my argument".

Technicalities are thrown everywhere, but I believe enough information for its inclusion exists. Chapultepec Castle is just as much a revival castle as those listed from England - yet they seem to overlook that, perhaps because it is in Mexico...? The time period, etc. all point to the reality of Chapultepec being a revival castle. As a matter of fact, it was the only North American castle used to house a sovereign- the only one with that designation.

I had hoped to bring to the reader's attention the fact that these structures do not only exist in Europe, but the influence of castle revivalism reached into other countries as well. Anything you could do to help would be great. Thank you. C.Kent87 (talk) 04:33, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply, actually I thought maybe you would agree with its inclusion in the article and make a remark on the talk page? There are two against it, but not many joining the discussion. If you have no interest, that is fine too. Thank you for taking time to read. C.Kent87 (talk) 04:22, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
That would be great! It's upsetting because there is one user who insists that it shouldn't be mentioned - yet many British revival castles are, and one German (Which shares a common architect w/ Chapultepec). It should be mentioned so that the sphere of influence is better documented. Thank you for your help. C.Kent87 (talk) 19:24, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Danube by Visegrád / Esztergom

Hi!

The Danube by Esztergom picture was taken from the top of the cathedral facing southwest: [2] The white building is the Archbishop's Palace, and the watertown church (Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola). Slovakia is on the top right.

The Danube by Visegrád was taken from halfway up the castle facing west. That huge bay you see was supposed to be part of the Bős-Nagymaros Dam, but the project was abandoned. Villy (talk) 11:03, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Increased permission requested

{{adminhelp}}

I am requesting the increase of editing scope to include minor additions to semi protected articles. In this particular case, I wanted to add the category 'Psychiatric illnesses' to the article about Suicide.

Prior to my current activity on Wikisource, where I am extensively editing the Popular Science Monthly Project, I was very active here for a number of years will continue to be so.

In Wikisource, in addition to general proofreading, select proofread articles from the project will be recommended by academics to medical students interested in the history of the sciences in the 19th century. I am doing extensive categorization and interlinking of articles back to Wikipedia for additional reference to relevant topics, as well as related images uploaded to the Commons. Ineuw (talk) 17:45, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

You should be able to edit semi-protected pages at present, as far as I can see. What happens when you try to edit suicide? Algebraist 17:49, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
Concur with above. Suicide is only semi-protected, so any WP:Autoconfirmed account should be able to edit it, which only means four days old and more than ten edits. Your account is (to put it mildly) well past those thresholds. What problem do you encounter when you try to edit Suicide?
Something to check: click "My preferences" at the top of the screen. Under "User profile", in the "Basic information" box, what does it say in the line "Member of groups"? JohnCD (talk) 18:42, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, it worked now. I added the necessary category. How can I avoid such issues in the future, after all I am very active on Wikisource, editing about 3,000 per month and constantly referencing, or updating categories in Wikipedia. Ineuw (talk) 18:52, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
There shouldn't be any problem, I don't understand why there was - I didn't do anything just now to clear one. I asked about the "Member of groups" line because your account is actually so old that I thought maybe it had never got automatically marked as "autoconfirmed" - as long as "Autoconfirmed users" appears on the "Member of groups" line, you should have no problem editing semi-protected pages. JohnCD (talk) 19:01, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
So many thanks. This is about being old. :-) I just saw the warning, so I thought that it won't let me do anything, and began this post. Afterwards, I tried it again and it's fine. Ineuw (talk) 19:34, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

[edit] You're invited!

Hello, Ineuw,

You are invited meet with your fellow Wikipedians by attending the Montréal meetup scheduled on Sunday, June 27, 2010; between 1500 - 1700 to be held at the Comité Social Centre Sud (CSCS), located at 1710 Beaudry, in Montréal. You can sign up at the meetup page.

The meetup is happening in concurrence with RoCoCo 2010, a free, bilingual, weekend unconference including many people involved with Wikis both within the Wikipedia/Wikimedia Community and abroad. You do not need to attend the conference to sign up for the Wikimeetup, but you are certainly welcome! Bastique ☎ call me!

(PS: Please share this with those you know who might not be on the delivery list, i.e. Users in Montreal/Quebec)

[edit] Adding info from a web article

I would like to add information to the Robert S. Allen page from this article, written by Thomas E. Ricks. Never having done something like this, I don't know what the rules are about referencing a web article, and its incorporation. I would much appreciate if someone would point me to any relevant example which I can study. For the purposes of this post, please ignore my note about Wikisource as I monitor Wikipedia regularly. Thanks. Ineuw talk page on English Wikisource 06:35, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi Ineuw. That does look like interesting information to add to the article. The best way to incorporate the article would be to summarize the claim it makes, then cite the article using the {{template:Cite news}} template inline next to it.
For example, you could add:
"According to John Earl Haynes, Harvey Klehr and Alexander Vassiliev in their 2009 book ''Spies: the rise and fall of the KGB in America'', Allen had done x, y, and z.<ref>{{cite news |title=Patton's Third Army deputy intel officer briefly was on the KGB's payroll |first=Thomas E |last=Ricks |newspaper=Foreign Policy |date=1 December 2010 |url=http://ricks.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2010/12/01/pattons_third_army_deputy_intel_officer_briefly_was_on_the_kgbs_payroll |accessdate=2 December 2010}}</ref>". (I took the blank citation template from Template:Cite news and populated the fields myself.)
Then, if you add a {{reflist}} tag at the bottom of the article under the References section heading, the reference will show up in that section, linked from a footnote number automatically generated next to the sentence in the text.
Does that answer your question? Gonzonoir (talk) 09:00, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

It certainly does - Many thanks.! Ineuw talk page on English Wikisource 09:02, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Moving Public domain image(s) to Wikimedia Commons

  1. I need to move this Public domain image to the Commons for use on Wikisource. Can this be accomplished without downloading and uploading again? Thanks in advance. Ineuw talk page on English Wikisource 12:37, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Re. picture - File:Brunton Thomas Lauder sig.jpg - I can move that from enwiki to Commons, using commons helper - I already have a login for that system, so probably easier for me to do it for you. Please wait.

Now done - picture is on commons under same name, Commons:File:Brunton Thomas Lauder sig.jpg. Cheers.  Chzz  ►  14:33, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Re. login;

Ineuw, sometimes strange glitches happen. So if you have not already, please could you try the following;

  • Clearing the 'cookies' on your browser
  • Doing a full reboot (power off and on).
  • Check your account is unified, with Special:MergeAccount

If you are still getting problems after trying that, please could you use a new {{helpme}} - and please give as many details as possible - ie operating system, version, when the problem first happened, does it occur if you visit other wiki such as German Wikipedia, wikibooks:Main_Page, and Wiktionary.

Also, if you have another browser, it would be helpful if you could try that, to tell us if the problem is specific to one browser.

If you are still having troubles, please do reinstate the helpme. I'll just remove it for now, whilst we wait for your response. Thanks,  Chzz  ►  14:23, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:41, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit] List of assassins and WP:BLP

As a reminder, when you add potentially controversial content about a living person (such as naming them an assassin) you need to provide a reliable source to support that claim, even if the claim is not the article specifically about that person. A source was easy to find in that persons article so I have added it to List of assassins, but in the future you should be be providing sources for the content you add as you add it to articles.Active Banana (bananaphone 04:18, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
