Bilbao harbour and the Primrose fighting her way...[edit]

16th-century Bilbao had a port, but it was some kilometers upstream (see Nervión). The harbour is El Abra -like the French Le Havre-, and the vessel Primrose was off Algorta, Getxo. The barra de Portugalete (Portugalete Sandbar, rather treacherous to negotiate) was between Portugalete and Las Arenas, Getxo too (Las Arenas -The Sands- didn't exist in 1585). The bureaucratic Spaniard point of wiew regarding Teniente Corregidor Guevara's kidnapping lacks perhaps the swashbuckling epic of the English version. The Corregidor was the representative of the CAstilian Crown in Biscay. Guevara was the Deputy Corregidor.
