Name of page[edit]

Oświęcim is a town, and Auschwitz is a concentration camp. I have visited Oświęcim, which is a very pretty town the residents of which are, of course, not respnsible for what the Germans dis at Auschwitz. However, the name Auschwitz is not only the German name for the town of Oświęcim, it it the common English name for the town, and for the synagogue. It is the name used by the New York Times (Auschwitz Synagogue to Reopen, Bringing 'Hopes of the Future ...query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C07E1D8153DF935A25755C0A96E958260 ) the BBC (BBC News | Europe | Auschwitz synagogue to be rededicated news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/211411.stm ) and other English language news media when discussing this synagogue. This is an English-language encyclopedia. Therefore the name Auschwitz synagogue is correct.

It is also the fact that throughout Europe and the world , synagogues frequently take the name of the town they are in, desipte the fact that they have formal, Hebrew names as the Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot Synagogue does. See, for example, Sarajevo Synagogue, Czernowitz Synagogue, Hobart Synagogue Old Synagogue at Canterbury... This is especially true when a synagogue is the only or the most famous synagogue in a town, as is the case with the Auschwitz synagogueElan26 (talk) 12:24, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Elan26[reply]

  • Also , please not that according to http://stats.grok.se/ this page under the formal name of the synagogue got exactly four hits las tmonth. Nobody can find it. I wanted to add material after visiting the synagogue, and I had a very hard time finding the page.Elan26 (talk) 12:34, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Elan26[reply]

Hello, the synagogue is part of the Auschwitz Jewish center. Please change the name of the article - I will rewrite it and correct wrong information. Hlomi$ (talk) 15:22, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
