  • The legally trademarked name of the science fiction and fantasy convention held annually in Vancouver, BC is VCON. VCON is *not* an abbreviation for "Vancouver Science Fiction Convention". I know this because I have been a member of the Convention Organization Committee for several years and am currently the President of the West Coast Science Fiction Association, VCON's parent non-profit organization. strawberryJAMM (talk) 06:47, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vancouver Science Fiction ConventionVCON — While VCON may "look like an abbreviation" to Anthony Appleyard (see earlier Move discussion) that doesn't change the fact that it is not an abbreviation - The name of this convention is VCON, a legally registered trademark. Additionally, VCON is the most common name used to refer to the event as evidenced by articles written in local newspapers, professional guests and regular attending members at VCON 36, the 2011 event:

Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.
  • Support - despite Jenni's obvious COI and use of blogposts (not a reliable source), this is a standard example of a local SF convention which is commonly and ordinarily known by a short name. Some other examples that I've attended in the past two years include Wiscon (the Wisconsin Science Fiction Convention and Conference), Chattacon, DucKon, Windycon, and ICON. None of these is commonly (or at all) referred to by any long and awkward handle. In response to Orange Mike (thanks for the support) regarding the use of blog posts: I know they aren't normally considered reliable sources, but they seemed appropriate in the context of proving that the name requested is, in fact, the common name used in both formal (newspapers) and informal (blogs, podcasts) situations. Resolving Conflict of Interest and use of Primary Sources Issues[edit]

I would like to know how best to deal with the Conflict of Interest, Primary Sources and Verifiability issues for this page.

VCON is a long established event (2011 was our 40th anniversary) but is still relatively small, averaging about 600 members each year. We are not like a Dragon*Con or a GenCon which are large enough to have generated a multitude of outside references from established, reliable sources. The convention is well known among Canadian science fiction and fantasy fandom, and has even hosted Canvention (the Canadian equivalent of Worldcon at which the Auroras are awarded to Canadian science fiction and fantasy authors and artists) but most articles that refer to the convention have been written by amateur authors for Fanzines and other personal publications. The result is that the majority of factual source material about the convention is found on VCON's own website.

Additionally the most likely people interested in maintaining this page are those, like myself, who are or who have been closely involved with the convention for some time.

I'd appreciate advice on how we can clean up the page as required by the other banners and then keep it up to date and accurate without making it necessary to leave the banners related to these specific issues on the page. Jenni Merrifield (talk) 21:40, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Table[edit]

I would prefer to have a history table rather than just a GoH table. But I'm not sure how to fix it. In a previous article, I just started a second table rather than trying to reconcile what I wanted with what was already there. But in this case, a history table (listing year, theme, location, etc) should have the GoH, and that's just confusion-inducing. Besides, I don't know enough of the history. I was a regular in the eighties, and on the board a couple of times, but have been away from Vancouver for more than a decade now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gossg (talkcontribs) 17:35, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Table format does not work, as guests with multiple appearances don't sort correctly. A conventional list would be so much easier to read for who was at VCON 30 Vicarage (talk) 08:55, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
