In this Burmese name, the given name is Saw Win Hlaing. There is no family name.

Thway Thit Win Hlaing (Burmese: သွေးသစ်ဝင်းလှိုင်) is a Burmese Lethwei fighter.[3][4][5] He is the 2016 and 2018 Golden Belt Champion[6][7] and is one of the most successful fighters of the World Lethwei Championship.[8] He is known for his unassuming approach and patience and relies on counters rather than straight offense.[9][10][11]

Lethwei career

Most of Win Hlaing's career is forgettable due to his precise style of fighting. His approach has left him partially invisible to most boxing fans until 2014.[12][13] In 2017 he was part of the ONE Championship roster for just one single dark match. Because of the new partnership the un-televised lethwei bout was contested under WLC's ruleset.[14]

On Armed Forced Day in 2018, an event was held in Maungdaw, Rakhine State. A local wealthy entrepreneur invested in hosting the event which was green-lit by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. The military has a long history of supporting Myanmar's traditional fighting arts.[15][4] It was seen as a move by the military and pro-ethnic Rakhine that peace had returned and to avert attention from the Rohingya crisis. Win Hlaing was featured in the main event against Saw Ba Oo.[16]

The fight with Reza at Win Sein in 2020 was almost in jeopardy as Win Hlaing had been feeling ill. Before the fight they repeatedly checked his hydration levels to make sure he could compete. The fight ended up in his favour when he knocked Reza out in round 2.[17]

A much anticipated fight with Soe Lin Oo, whom he had never faced before, finally materialised in 2022. The aftermath of the 2021 Coup d'etat[18] however, resulted in the fight being only three rounds instead of five. The meeting of the two would make for an interesting watch as their fight styles would prove a challenge to both. Win Hlaing lost his only fight to a pressure fighter in Tha Pyay Nyo, and Soe Lin Oo's only TKO loss was to a counter puncher by the name of Shwe Yar Man.[9]

Personal life

Win Hlaing is the son of U Saw Win Shwe and Daw Nan Cho Cho Lay. His brother Than Hlaing briefly enjoyed a boxing career.[2] Win Hlaing was married in Hpa-an on February 26, 2020 and has expressed his wish to have children.[19]
