Templates[edit]

I need some help. Is it possible to make a template that has been "transcluded" show up on only some namespaces such as if you included you {{TestTemplate}} on a mainspace or article page nothing would show up but when you included it on a userpage it would happen? I looked over the help:templates guide but i coulnt find any function that could do this? You probably cant but im just asking.

Hi there, I tried it out using an if statement and it doesn't seem to work, if it was only for one page then it would most likely work but as far as I can see it wouldn't work for any userspace, the if statement I tried was: {{{ #ifexist: <page name> | <wikitext if page exists> | <wikitext if page does not exist> }} it checks to see if a page exists and respsonds based on that. you might want to try and play about with it if you like! For more info on IF and parser functions see m:ParserFunctions.Andytalk 20:28, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
(edit conflict) You can use this, but I don't know of any other templates that do this, so you should get consensus before implementing something like this.
{{#switch: {{SUBJECTSPACE}}
 | User = TestTemplate code
 |
}}

Thanks ill try that! -Icewedge 20:33, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Second question, is it possible to make a template that is part of another template float outside of an existing template? For example making a userbox come with a banner that floats at the top of a users page but still have the original userbox inside the userbox grouping template. -Icewedge 01:41, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

This question seems complicated, try at the Help desk or Pump tech.--Commander Keane 02:58, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Image:Conservlogo2.png[edit]

Hello Icewedge, an automated process has found an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, such as fair use. The image (Image:Conservlogo2.png) was found at the following location: User:Icewedge. This image or media will be removed per statement number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media will be replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. The image that was replaced will not be automatically deleted, but it could be deleted at a later date. Articles using the same image should not be affected by my edits. I ask you to please not re-add the image to your userpage and could consider finding a replacement image licensed under either the Creative Commons or GFDL license or released to the public domain. Please note that it is possible that the image on your page is included vie a template or usebox. In that case, please find a free image for the template or userbox. Thanks for your attention and cooperation. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 11:20, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

I have a pseudo-Conservapedia image for my Wackopedia usrbox. See [[1]]. Barfbagger 04:01, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Welcoming users[edit]

Hey, When welcome users, please use their talk page, not their user page. You probably already know this, but the user page is meant for a user to describe themselves/their acheivements/etc, and the talk page for messages for them.

Thanks! Matt - TheFearow 07:28, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Anytime, i've made worse mistakes (almost got banned because I started doing NP patrol but forgot I was logged in on my bot account - that was embarassing) and accidentally putting notices on user pages happens alot. Matt - TheFearow 07:34, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Highlighting text?[edit]

Is it possible to highlight text with colors? If so how? Thanks for any help i get :)

Probably, but there is no need to do this on Wikipedia. -- John Reaves (talk) 20:21, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}} is for help editing Wikipedia, the encyclopedia, not userspace. -- John Reaves (talk) 21:25, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Try IRC, go to http://java.freenode.net and join #wikipedia or #wikipedia-en-help and ask there. Or, if you've seen it somewhere, just copy the code or ask the person that used it.-- John Reaves (talk) 21:39, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the nice review you gave me. I'll keep in mind what you said. To be honest, I was beginning to lose hope about the review. I know I'm supposed to keep good faith, but its seems to me that no one is going to ever review me. Thanks again, I appreciate your response. Cheers!!! -Zacharycrimsonwolf 13:20, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Home Depot[edit]

On the Home Depot article, I removed several paragraphs of newly inserted material that was related to its environmental record in an attempt to clean up the section, and posted my reasons for doing so on the talk page for the article. You simply reverted my edit with no explaination given. I would greatly appreciate some comments on the talk page, explaining why you feel that content belongs within the article. --161.88.255.139 21:46, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry about that, I was patrolling for vandalism and saw that you removed a large chunk of content from the page and when I looked at your talk and saw all those warnings so I decided that you must just be a vandal. My mistake, you might want to get an account though if an IP address you edit from is plagued with vandals. On the matter of the sections content I think we should keep it, needs a bit of a rewrite but the information is relevant. -ĬŴΣĐĝё 22:12, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply!
My edit was an attempt at cleaning it up, I purged much of the content that seems to me to be more environmental activist propaganda rather rather than being encyclopedic about the subject company, but left intact the mission statement and an example of their attempts to achive that mission. Although I may have been overly aggressive and purged some content that could have just been reworded.
I actually do have a user ID, I just frequently forget to login. In theory, all posts from my IP originate from me or my co-workers - so it's rather disappointing that so many warnings and even periodic blocks have been needed for this IP. --161.88.255.139 22:41, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Help with Administrator Abuse[edit]

Could you please look at the discussion page for User:68.220.238.226? The administrator User:Can't sleep, clown will eat me seems to be trying to cover up his abusive blocks by deleting requests to be unblocked. I noticed you called him out for something similar recently. Who can this be reported to?

Hmm, I am looking into it. But seriously dude, He may not be following WP procedure but your still a vandal. -ĬŴΣĐĝё 18:40, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

My editor review[edit]

Hey there! Thanks for the comments on my editor review - I really appreciate them. I'd never thought of the 'marking vandalism reverts as minor' before - definitely something to consider there. And I'm considering grabbing Twinkle at some point, since VandalProof has been broken for ages - I'll have to test how it gets along with my Firefox and ZoneAlarm. Again, I appreciate the constructive comments. Cheers! Tony Fox (arf!) review? 20:48, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Your welcome. Keep up the good work! -ĬŴΣĐĝё 02:41, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Categories[edit]

I attempted to fix your categories sub-page. Also, please feel free to list your {WP:SOCK|socks]] on some user page or sub-page, but please don't create a category for them. I've nominated the category for deletion at WP:UCFD, please feel free to comment there. - jc37 02:53, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Well Jc73 I am deeply confused. I think you may need some more caffeine or something. You posted this on my user page; in which you informed me that I you had nominated me socks category up for deletion and tried to "fix" my category page. Neither of these actions makes the slightest bit of sense at all.
  1. The category "socks of Icewedge" was not existent until you nominated it for deletion, if you look at the [2] history for the page you will see you are the only contributor. You created the page just to nominate it for deletion? Admittedly I had links to that category on the pages of my socks but just as this link does not make a page neither did those.
  2. Also it is evident that you did not understand what the page User:Icewedge/Categories was for. I have reverted your changes although I will be keeping the page name change. This is just a tip but it is best not to go messing with users pages and subs other than to fix wiki formatting errors and spelling mistakes.
If either of these pages were actually not in compliance with wikipedia policies please inform me. Cheers. -ĬŴΣĐĝё 04:23, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
I can appreciate that you're confused. This has confused more than one user. Essentially, you created the category when you added the first member to the category. I created the category page when I added the cfd tag.
In any case, rather than speedily deleting the category by depopulation, I chose to nominate it for deletion at WP:UCFD. That discussion is moot, however, since you're agreeable to it's removal/depopulation.
As for your "category redirect", it's a userspace redirect that only had one of your own userpages linking to it. It's redundant, since anyone can link to your user pages at the top of each sub-page.
Why did I choose to help? I came here because I saw that you had placed yourself in Category:Wikipedians, which is contrary to its usage (see the banner at the top of that page). Well, I noted your many questions on your talk page about how Wikipedia syntax works. I went to the actual page which was categorised, and found the redirect, investigated it, and "fixed" it, presuming that it, like your mistaken understanding about categories, was based on not understanding syntax, and you were improperly using a redirect. (Which would exactly be fixing "wiki formatting errors".)
Anyway, I am now presuming that it's the result of some "game" you're playing involving refusing to be categorised, or involving not having your user categories being changed, or both.
Now at the moment I don't care enough to nominate the page for WP:MFD, but someone else may.
I'm going to remove the Wikipedians category per previous consensus, and leave you to the rest of your games, for now.
As you read the above, and are looking for the typical links to policy and guidelines, and find them missing, it's because I've decided from further reading that you're quite not the newbie you're wishing to seem to be, and am not bothering at this time. However, should you sincerely not know or understand, I'll be more than happy to stand corrected and provide such as necessary. - jc37 06:58, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok I get the category creation thing now and I'm sorry to have put my self in the "wikipedians" category I did not realize it was just for arranging other categories but I see no reason why you would have a problem with my sub page. It is not "redudant" as you claim. -ĬŴΣĐĝё(autographs) 17:46, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:GodfatherUnusedScene.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:GodfatherUnusedScene.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive News!

We are one week in to the drive, and it's already going fantastic. Numerous days of backlogs have been tackled, with hundreds of articles having been reviewed. We do, however, have some news!

First off, a HUGE congratulations to everyone participating so far. I understand some members are inactive due to vacation, but we are still making great progress.

Secondly, make sure that before you go off and review old submissions, that you review all submissions for the present day, and the day before, so that we aren't actually making a bigger backlog, by letting submissions get archived while we're checking stuff from 2006.

Third, remember to update your running total, on the drive page. Honesty is the best policy, so if you lie about the number of articles you've reviewed, we'll all make angry faces while looking at your userpage.

And, last, if you have any questions about the drive, feel free to ask me, or any other members of the project.

Great job, everyone! We're going to get that backlog!
GrooveDog.

AFC News[edit]

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive News!

We are nine days away from the end of the drive, and it's been fantastic! Many, many, many days of backlog have been tackled, and over 1500 articles reviewed!

To start off, a HUGE THANKS to everyone who helped out with the coordination of the drive, and actually fighting the backlog in the drive itself. Everyone's done a great job helping out, no matter how many articles you've reviewed/

Remember to update your running total, on the drive page. This is the ONLY way that I will be able to give out awards appropriately.

Lastly, I will be giving out awards on August 16th. Anyone who could help me, that would be fantastic. Contact me on my talk page if you'd like to volunteer.

Great job, everyone! This Drive has been fantastic, and I'm sure that some members of the Project have definitely made friends by collaborating on the talk pages. Thanks,
GrooveDog.

Advertising and SoapBox[edit]

Icewedge you wrote this to me: please do not add promotional material to articles. Advertising, and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox", is strongly discouraged. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. -Icewedge 21:16, 6 August 2007 (UTC).

How am I advertising or using wikipedia as a soapbox ?

I am a college student in America of India decent. And I feel proud that there is a Hip Hop artist here in the US that has been influenced by Ashoka The Great. Not only that, but has been on major projects with some of the most successful Hip Hop artists today. I was not promoting him. I mentioned him under "POP Culture." Because it is a well known fact he chose that name because of Ashoka The Great. I find this quite ignorant if we can mention movies that were inspired by him but not a musical artists. I feel its a low blow to the Indian community if we can talk about our people who were successful in the past...but if I mention someone who has been inspired by the same person and is successful it has to be censored. Why ?

Ok, I admit my message was a bit off topic (it was computer generated). The reason why I reverted your stuff though is because it seems to be promotion. So far all but one of your edits have been related to placing references and links to this Hip Hop artist who seems as of yet un notable (I did a bit of google searching), and reverting back in the information when it was removed. Generaly things should only be placed in sections like the "POP culture" one they are signifigant enough to have an article of there own. -Icewedge 22:32, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Note: the following was deleted by the user at User talk:Redblue85, who then complained about his edits being reverted for no reason. As he called on you for action, I'm reposting my message to him here, as he's the one who started this thread as well.
All of the other artists you mentioned have reached a leval of notability (please follow link to see Wikipedia's criteria) to have their own articles, and would be reasonable to have references to them in appropriate other articles. The artists you've added to the articles have not reached that level of notability. If they do in the future, then it would be reasonable to have some references to them at that stage (but not in the promotionalistic wording currently being proposed). However, at this stage, listing them in the articles is nothing more than trying to use Wikipedia as a promotional tool for those non-currently-notable artists. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 23:10, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
