Ohio State Route Articles

Hey, there – while your contributions are very much appreciated as far as starting articles, I have been following behind and doing a lot of simple clean-up items that you should be aware of:

  • Shield sizes: if 1- or 2-digit shields, they should be 20px wide; 3-digit shields are 25px wide. This is in reference to the Infoboxes.
  • Categorization: please include [[Category:Ohio state highways|XXX]] (where XXX is the route number, including leading zeros for anything below 100) at the bottom of each article. This links back to and populates the Category page.
  • Redirects: all Ohio state route articles have a redirect to them, titled State Route X (Ohio). Start the page with this title, then type the name of the article you're redirecting to in the edit box (Ohio State Route X); highlight the text you just typed; then click the #R button above the edit box.
  • Talk page: click on the discussion tab after you have created the article, and enter the following in the edit box: {{Template:Ohio State Highways WikiProject}}.
  • Plagarism: most importantly, direct yourself to the text immediately below the Save page button below the edit box! It states, "Do not copy text from other websites without permission. It will be deleted." You need to paraphrase, unless you, of course, have permission to copy it verbatim.

I don't want to come down on you, as it's really nice to see all of these "red links" go away. But there are simple things you can do to keep in line with Wikipedia's rules and with the Ohio State Highways WikiProject standards. I hope you'll take all of this constructively...and take a look at the WikiProject's standards for Ohio route articles. I'd be happy to offer any further assistance you might need. Please direct all questions to my talk page.

Heard you were from the Akron area. I was wondering what State Route articles you've worked on. You're doing a great job, keep it up! --UltraSkuzzi 00:01, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

"Original state routes"

Hi; just a quick note...if Simpson's page states that a route is an "original state highway," then it was certified in 1924. This information can be found at Explanation of the Ohio State Highway System (The Unofficial Ohio State Highways Web Site) by John Simpson. Just a little tidbit for ya! Happy editing! — Homefryes SayDo 13:45, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

This was discussed briefly at the OHSH page, and I will post my answer to your question there for open debate. — Homefryes SayDo 13:22, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Milktaco,

You recently created the page Columbus Metro Parks. There was an existing page on the same subject, Metro Parks (Columbus, Ohio), with what appears to be the same information. I have changed your page to a redirect. Please let me know if you believe any content was lost due to the redirect. Thanks for your work on Ohio subjects. Derek Balsam(talk) 02:35, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

FYI, I have a number of photographs of most of the Metro Parks in Columbus which I have been taking over the last 12 or so months. I plan on uploading a couple good shots to Commons when I get around to it. I will probably choose one or two to illustrate the Metro Parks article. Cheers, Derek Balsam(talk) 19:48, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Please do not copy text from other sources, as you did here. This is copyright infringement. Instead, use that source as a reference, but write the facts in your own words. Thank you. --NE2 04:56, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

That is false. Facts cannot be copyrighted, but the expression of them is copyrighted by default. --NE2 05:00, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
You should reference his site so others know where the information is from. (However, his site does not seem to be a reliable source; I believe ODOT has old maps online that you can use as better references.) The main problem was that you were copying the text rather than writing the facts in your own words. --NE2 05:05, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
That's on the line, but possibly acceptable. However, bulleted lists like that should be avoided; see Wikipedia:Proseline. --NE2 05:12, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
I get the fact, it all makes since because the information that you find on web sites should not be copyed on to Wikipedia articles. If you do use that information, it should be used in your own words. I'm glad that I found this stuff out on the Ohio Highway articles that I'm helping you out on with. I will try to get to work again on some of these state highway articles.--OHWiki 01:56, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

An important letter

Dear roads editor,

You may have noticed some changes at WP:USRD lately. Some of them, like the cleanup templates and the stub templates, have been astounding and great. Unfortunately, others have been disturbing.

This has become evidenced by the departure of a few prominent editors at USRD, a few RFC's, and much fighting among USRD editors.

After the second RFC, many of us found the opportunity to take a step away from Wikipedia for a while--as a self-imposed wikibreak, or possibly on vacation.

The result of such introspection was that many of us were placing ourselves in a "walled garden" and on a self-imposed pedestal of authority over the roads department. Also, we were being hostile to a few users who were not agreeing with us.

In fact, IRC has been the main incarnation of this "walled garden." Decisions have been made there to conduct grudges and prejudices against a few valued USRD users with poor justification.

For this, we have come to apologize. We have come to ask your forgiveness.

In addition to this, we hope to work as one USRD team from now on and to encourage cooperation instead of the promotion of interests.

All users are welcome to collaborate on IRC, the newsletter, or anywhere else at USRD.

In the future, please feel free to approach us about any issues you may have.

Regards,

Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 17:06, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

I don't see how this could possibly be a useful topic for an article. Is there something I'm missing? Friday (talk) 19:00, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
