Literature about Sweden in English

[edit]

Hi there Fred! Happy midsummer to you too! Still stuck in LA for another week, so we'll have to celebrate in Vasaparken in Agoura Hills this year. Bah! It's out in the desert and way, way, way too hot and dry for comfort. About the book list: there is SO MUCH stuff out there---just looking at my own book shelves, I don't even know where to begin (not to talk about the boxes of unpacked, sigh, stuff under my bed.) :) Are you thinking about history, geography, design, press history, culture in general? I love my Scanian architecture and old Scanian fabric design, so I have books on stuff like that too. What I could do, if you want to, is to put together a list of all scholarly reviewed papers and important books puplished in a particular subject relating to Sweden, and then you can scan the abstracts to see if it's something you want to read, or refer people to. I get constantly updated lists on dissertations and new books in certain subject areas through the university and (although with a lag) have access to most publication through JSTOR, Oxford, etc. I'll get a small list together for you this weekend, just with a few personal favorites. Best, Pia 23:34, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fred, I just noticed your front page note about Emanuel Swedenborg, so I'll include sources about him. But I don't know much about religion, or Swedenborg in general, except for excerpts I've read about him indirectly in regards to his influence on the anti-slavery movement in the US. I'm not sure I can be of much help there.

But on a different issue---it seems you could use a summary of this 43 page peer-reviewed article:

Kirchhoff, Hans. "Doing All That Can Be Done – The Swedish Foreign Ministry and the Persecution of Jews in Denmark in October 1943. A Study in Humanitarian Aid and Realpolitik". Scandinavian Journal of History, Issue 24. (Hans Kirchhoff, Dr. Phil., senior lecturer at the Department of History, University of Copenhagen. His present research concerns Holocaust studies, studies on Danish policy of neutrality during the Second World War, and German occupation policy.)

The article has an analysis of S. Koblik, The Stones Cry Out: Sweden’s Response to the Persecution of the Jews 1933–1945 (New York, 1988) and P. A. Levine, From Indifference to Activism: Swedish Diplomacy and the Holocaust; 1938–1944 (Uppsala, 1996), as well as P.A Levine. "Anti-Semitism in Sweden’s Foreign Office: How Important Was It?", Historisk Tidskrift (Stockholm, 1996), pp. 8–27. Also deals with: L. Yahil, "Scandinavian Countries to the Rescue of Concentration Camp Prisoners", Yad Vashem Studies VI (Jerusalem, 1967), pp. 181 ff. and pretty much all other scholars who has done reserach on this issue. If you don't have access to Scandinavian Journal of History, I could perhaps e-mail the article pdf to you. (once my e-mail link is put up on my page. haven't gotten around to that yet). I downloaded the article already and have it in my files. But I'm working on my sandbox project right now so I'd be hard pressed to work on anything else at the moment. But later this summer, perhaps. Pia 01:22, 24 June 2006 (UTC) I'll get back to you with a sandbox page for my favorite English language sources on Sweden later. Got to run.[reply]

It seems that Pia has given you some good tips already. You should have access to both Scandinavian Journal of History and JSTOR through your university library or network (check with the university if and how you can log in from home, if you don't already know how to do that). Anything by Michael Roberts is useful for Swedish 17th and 18th century history. And of course, most Swedish-language dissertations have an (often quite lengthy) English summary. up+land 19:31, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I understand better now FredChess. I'll get additions to your list organized ASAP. Too much going on this weekend. And about divulging: so true. Controversial articles are really time consuming, as well as intellectually and emotionally draining---I also feel reluctant to invest too much energy in that particular arena (WWII). But it's hard on the conscience when the POV scale tilts too far in either direction in this type of article, and especially when there are insufficient references to balance the views and give an overview of the different controversies involved. So my hope is that Uppland will take it on then. :)(Hi there Uppland!) Best, Pia 21:34, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think we were very lucky

[edit]

FredChess, I haven't bothered reverting these problems (letting sleeping dogs lie, or however the saying goes), but I thought I'd let you know: I think we were very lucky in regards to the user who questioned the facts on the Scanian ling talk page, considering some other edits (which have gone unnoticed, by the way), by the same user, which were not as well argued, (not argued as all, actually, just irrational) for example: here [1], here [2], here [3], here [4], and here[5] There are others, but since I'm not overly concerned with videogames and magic tricks (and have no knowledge in those subjects) I haven't bothered with it, yet. But if I do later on, I think I would have to question if these kind of edits would have anything to do with the possibly negative influence on the business described in a page started by the same user, at [6] Best, Pia 00:56, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The book list

[edit]

Hi again FredChess. Please ignore my last message..the vandalism had already been reverted when I wrote about it, so somebody (or something, if it's an automated wiki thing) is keeping an eye on the activity of that user already. Anyway: I put some books about Sweden in my sandbox just now, at User:Pia L/sandbox. The books in my history section are by Nordstrom and Scott, professors with PhD degrees in history, active in Scandinavian studies and writing for a college level audience, but without being too difficult to follow. I think they are good sources for a non-Swedish audience. They give a fairly thorough overview of Swedish history through the ages, being scholarly but without presuming too much prior knowledge of the subject in a reader. Swedish historians are so specialized and focused on certain periods---it's rare to find books that make wide sweeps over the centuries, except by people like Herman Lindqvist of course, but he writes more "popular entertainment"-like history, with his hard-hitting and fast journalistic approach. Using his books takes a lot of extra footwork, as you have to double-check stuff in his tales without the help of footnotes explaining where he got his source material from, etc, etc. I put Moberg on my list, even though his books are getting old. I love him for trying to write history that is not about glorifying the Swedish kings but about the conditions their actions created for the common people. They were republished by University of Minnesota last year. Well, the rest of the list is self-explanatory, I hope. Later, Pia 10:08, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fred, about your message: "You can, if you want to, add more books if you find more material that you think is suitable." Certainly. I'll leave the list in the sandbox for now and I'll add more as I go along. Have to surf through the Swedish pages to see where sources are most urgently needed. I was planning to work on the "Snapphanar" article next. Got to finish the culture section on the Nevis article first though. Best wishes, Pia 23:29, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Source material for Christopher Gillberg

[edit]

Ove Lundgren, Chairman of the Ethics Committee at Gothenburg University, has just e-mailed me to say that I can look at all the source material that he has in the department for the Gillberg case. I thought that it might be good to put some of this material in Wikisource. (That is tricky for me to do, as I am not in Sweden right now, but perhaps something can be arranged.) The English Wikisource, however, only accepts English-language texts, and there is currently no Swedish Wikisource. Would you have recommendations on what to do if I can get the source material?
Daphne A 10:07, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but I don't think this is a good idea at all....
Material that hasn't been published should not be on Wikipedia, Wikisource or any other Wikimedia project. It is a common misconception that Wikipedia should report the truth, but in fact Wikipedia mainly reports the verifiable. If you look at Wikipedia:Verifiability, there is an exemple that is perfectly applicable on this issue. Verifiability is one of Wikipedias most fundamental policies.
Fred-Chess 10:45, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link to Verifiability; I was unaware. I'm far from expert in how Wikipedia works.
I would like to find a good way forward for the Gillberg article. Do you have recommendations? As an example, what if Gothenburg University uploaded some files (I do not know that this could be arranged)?

Advocacy request

[edit]

Heyo, Steve Caruso here. There is a Request for assistance by Carbonate (talk) on Talk:List of concentration and internment camps, List of concentration and internment camps and Internment. Would you be willing to take their case? If you will, please leave a note and sign under the entry on WP:AMARQ and change "(pending)" in the heading to "(open)." When you're finished with the case, set it to "(closed)". If you're not able to take the case, please leave me a message on my talk page so I can continue searching for a willing Advocate. Many thanks! אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 15:02, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thank you for handling my request. I'm not exactly sure what to make of all this as the RfA seemed very premature and since that time a sysop has begun participating in the revert war and locked down the pages as waiting for dispute resoltion...

The other party listed in the RfA is an IP address and has not responded. The supposedly 3rd party has recently left comments on my talk pages indicating that they were not so 3rd party after all. It all seems like procedural manipulations to keep the content out of the articles. I am at a loss of how to procced.

Carbonate

[edit]

I believe Carbonate would be helped by a friendly hand explaining that the best way for him to get the information he wanted in the encyclopedia is to find someone else who said what he wants said and quote them, as opposed to finding someone who said what he wants said and using them as evidence that what he wants is true - this is certainly the route he can use to win both in the internment camp issues (So and so drew a parallel between internment camps and the situation in the Gaza strip = NPOV and RS, The gaza strip is an internment camp = not so much), and the same with inflation. I would try to help with this, but I suspect that he's turned me out. JBKramer 17:03, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

??? Why are you posting about me on my advocates page? Carbonate 17:15, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Because I think he will quickly come to the same conclusion I have and I'm trying to save him some time. You could just take my advice and all your problems would be solved. JBKramer 18:09, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm travelling in areas with scant internet access, so it's difficult for me to keep up with Wikipedia right now. Thank you for your help, and it's unfortunate that nobody replied to the RfC. I saw your addition to the lead, and didn't want to revert it, so I tried to elaborate a bit instead. The problem is that the whole case is quite complicated and difficult to explain properly. Therefore the current version is much too long and doesn't really belong in the intro at all. It's just something I wrote quickly as a first step.

I wonder if this is a common thing? Someone has opponents who use Wikipedia to promote their view, or enemies who use Wikipedia for a smear campaign? I think there should be better ways of dealing with this kind of situation. --Denis Diderot 04:13, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm "starstruck", and not by Hollywood or the Lakers this time ;)

Harry Martinson article

[edit]

Hello,

Very nice clean up of the Harry Martinson article. I'm afraid I was in too much of a hurry, and was focusing on other things. Also, thanks for letting me know about the protocol regarding photos. I come across this a lot, where there is a photo in a link, but not in the Article itself. That's why I usually just label the link "Photo".

Be healthy,

Göta älv and more

[edit]

Hi Fred, please check out Talk:Göta River, maybe it should be moved. Also, I'd like to ask why the all the Swedish municipalities aren't parted from their main towns on English Wikipedia. For example, there is a huge difference between Trelleborg Municipality and Trelleborg. This is most apparent in countryside municipalities. I know that you have been working hard with the Swedish municipalities here on enwiki, and would like to hear your reasoning behind this. /Grillo 05:20, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grillo. Yea, the Göta River is better named Göta älv.
The municipaities: Well, with the little information most of those article consist of, I didn't want to spend my time splitting them; we'd just end up with two stubs. They were like that when I came. As you can see from the history of Trelleborg Municipality such small municipalities don't really expand either. But if anyone wants to split them, go ahead. Most larger municipalities (top 20 in population) have been split.
Fred-Chess 09:49, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Great! As long as they aren't longer than that I don't see any harm in them being put together. They can be splitted as they grow. I'll move Göta River to Göta älv (if it's technically possible...). /Grillo 17:40, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Christopher Gillberg, arbitration

[edit]

A Request for Arbitration has been made; see here. (I assumed that you wanted to be a party; if not, please let me know.)  —Daphne A 08:51, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your dedication, but I will be very surprised if the case is accepted. The Arb Com do not get involved in content disputed -- such disputed are a natural part of developing an encyclopedia. The Arb Com deals with repeated violations of policies and behaviour that makes editing difficult and disturbs Wikipedia as a whole. I haven't seen this on the article Christopher Gillberg. / Fred-Chess 10:39, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question about lack of citation

[edit]

Hi Fred, InUgly_American I did a edit of a description of what should actually be in The Ugly American as I discovered by doing a few more clicks on links. Am I missing something? Should I have a new job as a book reviewer and cite myself? :) Or should I have cited the book? Just curious.--Rcollman 19:12, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.
The second paragraph started with "The authors state that one of the "good" characters is "ugly" looking to create a contrast with the "handsome" characters who were "bad". In the book, the authors' "good" characters used their skills and resources to make a positive change in the lives of villagers in Southeast Asia and the "bad" characters used their skills and resources for other purposes. ".
This needs a source. You should not introduce your own conclusions on Wikipedia, only established conclusion. As a contrast, this source says exactly the opposite of you.

Wiki project

[edit]

Hi FredChess. I'm working on a hectic real life project this week so I won't be able to log in at all, but please e-mail me to let me know what needs to be done to get this started. I hope we can make it a long-term, slow-running process though, because I don't think people are able or willing to dedicate months of intensive work doing nothing but mundane tasks like categorizing, labeling and such. ;) Small chunks of to-do items on lists divided by section may make this more doable (and fun). TfD problem at Infobox Scientist

[edit]

Hi Fred, thank you for your help with getting the TfD tag visible at the top of the infobox. Another problem has occured that needs your expertise. Starting from when this TfD voting phase began, Pjacobi and his suspected sockpuppet 12.74.162.102, see [7], have been deleting Infobox Scientist from articles without waiting to hear the consensus from this TfD process or without obtaining consensus from the talk pages of the said articles. There have been about 20 deletes and the count is rising. I am thinking that this could be a little underhanded because his act of removing infoboxes of course removes the TfD tag too! So new readers or editors of that page will not know that there is a TfD going on and this could bias the outcome. It seems to me that any action that removes the TfD tag from visibility is rather sneeky. What do you think? bunix 16:42, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have never seen such a list. / Fred-Chess 16:06, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I remember seeing it once, with just a list of names without years or anything, but I don't remember where I saw it. All publications seem to start from 1164. --Drieakko 18:19, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible that such a list exists. I haven't seen one. / Fred-Chess 19:22, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Got it now. Maybe of interest to you in your good work at Archbishop of Uppsala. Bishops before 1164 were:
  • Severinus (Siwardus?)
  • Nicolaus
  • Sveno
  • Henricus (the same as Bishop Henry in Finland?)
  • Kopmannus
Source is the 13th century Swedish chronicle, information about it e.g. here. --Drieakko 07:52, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
