License tagging for File:Cecil Hight in uniform.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Cecil Hight in uniform.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Images + source[edit]

I see you're uploading a lot of images but giving a very vague source. This is bad, because we're going to end up nominating them for deletion if you can't be more specific. For example, for some sources you're saying "Royal Flying Corps archive", without giving any information as to when or if it was published or put on display - this is very important because publication date (*not* creation date) determines the public domain status in many situations. Can you please go back over all the images you've uploaded and indicate the website and URL where you found them? If you found them all offline and scanned them yourself, can you tell me more about this archive (e.g., when did it go in display) and does it give author information? Thanks. Magog The Ogre, thanks for the pointers. I'm something of a novice here, having only uploaded a few things sporadically, and so don't have any feel for the levels of detail required and how it works. Regarding the Crown Copyright stuff, for one you mention I'll ask the person who gave me the Royal Flying Corps archive stuff about specifics. But with standard service pictures of personnel - official photos taken by Government photographers for use in newspaper reports, etc, and widely used since their creation - do I need any proof? The service pictures are UK Crown copyright (Cecil Hight was a NZ citizen who came to the UK and served in the UK forces). So can you confirm my belief that it's OK to use official service portrait photos such as those already uploaded of Cecil Hight and John Freeborn?

The picture File:Cecil Hight civilian.jpg is from NZ, but copyright has lapsed. Earlier today I emailed the people in NZ who supplied the picture to get a formal declaration of this, which I'll forward to permissions-en@wikimedia.org as and when it arrives. Alright; a few things:

You shouldn't need to send OTRS permission for images which clearly fit into one of our standard age templates - if it was created before 1945, for instance, {{PD-UKGov}} should be fine. This shouldn't be necessary, although erring on the side of caution and sending it in anyway isn't bad either.
Where you got the image. You actually took out information on this edit: [1]. The source is not the license or the date, the source is where you got the image and where it originally came from.
The author, if known. If not, any information about the image taking conditions is helpful so we can be sure it was in fact taken by a UK serviceman.
Permission is needed where it doesn't clearly fit in one of the templates categories. We'll need permission on this one, for instance, because it clearly was taken recently, and it's already on an external website.
This image still needs a source (i.e., where you got it).

Magog The Ogre, thankyou in return for your patience. I'm sure seeing novices throwing stuff up with seemingly random tags must be frustrating to those of you who have long understood how it all works.

I'm aware that File:John Freeborn with his Orde portrait, 2004.jpg needs permission as it's a recent image - I got permission from the person who took the pic and runs the site before uploading the image, and permission has been forwarded.

You should be aware of the Wikimedia Foundation's position on photographs of public domain work. Simply put, the Foundation does not think that there is enough originality in such photographs such that getting permission from the photographer is even necessary.
