Welcome

Hello, Nigelcoates, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of your edits have not conformed to Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and have been reverted. Wikipedia articles should refer only to facts and interpretations that have been stated in print or on reputable websites or other forms of media. Always remember to provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. Wikipedia also has a related policy against including original research in articles.

There is a page about the verifiability policy that explains the policy in greater detail, and another that offers tips on the proper ways of citing sources. If you are stuck and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!  Prashanthns (talk) 21:02, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Category:People from ---

Hi, I have reverted several of your recent edits where you added Category:People from --- to articles about places. The category is meant to be used to group the articles by subject. Please can you see to the others.Thanks.--Harkey (talk) 07:15, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

SEE:-Wikipedia:Categorization--Harkey (talk) 07:26, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello again Nigel, thanks for the email. If you look at Kingston upon Hull#Notable people or Salford#Notable people, that will give you an idea of how Wikipedia prefers to deal with the topic of People from---.

A page about an individual person would be included in a Category:People from---. The Category is used to group pages about similar things and obviously the page Thirsk, say, is not about a person from Thirsk, it is about the place called Thirsk. So, Categories: Towns in North Yorkshire | Civil parishes in North Yorkshire | Market towns in England | Hambleton are all appropriate to add to the page. If you look at Category:People from Filey you will see the name of the place, grouped wrongly, in with the names of people. You could also use the trick that I have just used to point to the category by putting a colon inside the leading link brackets [[: (so the page on which it appears is not itself included in the category listing) e.g.See also Category:People from Thirsk. Hope this helps, if not get back to me.--Harkey (talk) 11:31, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Location details

Hi, many thanks for editing some of the Yorkshire village articles. I normally obtain information on places from streetmap. Locate the place you are interested in using the search facility, usually you have a choice of places to select from as the name is not unique. Once the map is displayed then move the pointer using the "Move arrow" tool at bottom right to the middle of the place you want to know details of. Once the arrow is in the right place then click on the text "Click here to convert coordinates" just under the map. This will open up a new browser window and display the details which gives the co-ordinates, use the figures in brackets for Lat & Long, the nearest post code to the arrow and LR gives the O/S reference. Do not be put off if you click the O/S reference on a wiki article and find it is off by 1/10th of a grid square east of where it should be as there is some problem with the conversions.

If you are creating new places in Yorkshire I would help if you could drop the project tag on the talk page so we can find it. Just put {{WikiProject Yorkshire|class=|importance=}} on the talk page. I did find Foxholes, North Yorkshire that you created last night.
