Article assessments

Sorry for first upsetting your non-editable archive page before seeing I need to post here. In connection with the last item on that page, I thought I should let you know that as there have been lots of related problems, I've been in touch with Village pump where they explained that these were due to an editing error which has now been corrected. All remaining incorrectly unassessed-listed talk pages should disappear over the next few days, including most of those under Women writers articles. They result from a problem with redirects but this has also been solved and all those marked NA should disappear soon.--Ipigott (talk) 08:25, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Women Writers assessments

Hi there, Rosie. I see you assessed Catherine Corless in August 2020 but it is now listed as unassessed. There are similar problems with, Fall on Your Knees, Larissa Kelly, Eswyn Lyster, Charlotte Roche and Vijayarajamallika, all of which you also rated. Three of these are now "assessed" (although no editing changes were made) while Larissa Kelly, Eswyn Lyster, and Vijayarajamallika remain unassessed. Thanks and a couple of questions (re: Maria Cristina Didero)

Hello Rosiestep, thank you for your rating ("C" no less!) of and improvements to the recently added article about Maria Cristina Didero (which is still very much a work in progress). I'm leaving this note here rather than on the Talk page of the article itself because my query is of a more general nature. I hope I've got the protocol correct. I have two questions that I hope you might help answer:

  1. What is the purpose of the insertion of the |ref=none/ parameter in the citations? I read a little about HarvErrors, but this is a tad above my level of technical knowledge. (I'm still getting up to speed with the proper formatting of these templates, so really, I suppose I'm also asking: is this something I should use systematically or is it a special case?)
  2. Regarding the change from "Early life and education" and " Work and career" sections to one "Biography" section, I was unable find anything in the MOS that speaks to this. Quite a few articles that I have read and/or worked on use the former option, so I tend towards this usage by default. The latter seems less precise, so I was a bit surprised to see the edit. (Again, is this something I should be doing?) In the same breath, also curious why you removed the {{Expand section|date=April 2023}} template. I had placed this in the hope that someone might come along and add a bit more depth to the summary information that I was able to locate.

  1. Regarding the C-class rating, I have a couple of scripts installed that give me some indications about an article's rating based on WP:ORES; in this case, the predicted quality was C (2.97). I always take that info with a grain of salt and peruse the article myself. In this case, in addition to the prose, this biography contains an extensive "Publications" section and also an "External links" section. I believe that's why ORES predicted -and I concurred- that a C-class rating was warranted. Also, to be transparent, I've reviewed thousands (really) of women writer biographies (I'm the founder of WP:WPWW), so that experience is useful. (Maybe a pagestalker can provide a link to the scripts.)
  2. Regarding |ref=none: I have a script installed that shows Harv warning in bold markup next to books and journals that use the cite template but aren't cited in the article. Commonly, this is noticed in "Publications" sections. By adding |ref=none, you don't get the Harv warning. (Maybe a pagestalker can provide a link to the script.)
  3. Regarding headers in biographies: Including ones for "Early life and education", "Career", "Personal life"/"Death and legacy" is common, but if info is limited (e.g., in the case of the Didero article, the "Early life and education" had only 2 sentences), then condensing into 1 section ("Biography") makes for smoother reading, especially in mobile view.
That said... none of these are die-hard-rules. Editors are warmly welcome to make changes/improvements so please WP:BEBOLD and revert/add/delete anything as you see fit. Also, please feel free to stop by and ask more questions about the Didero article or other articles in the future. WPWW is quite a mammoth project indeed. Complimenti..! (English: Gulp, wow..!) I'll pay attention now that I'm aware of it, and contribute where I'm able. In fact, I suppose I already have (inadvertently) in some small way by helping to get the Maria Cristina Didero and Marva Griffin Carter articles published. I'll add any other writers that I come across who are not represented in this encyclopaedia to the appropriate section of the project (I have a few on my WiR list already, though I'm mostly working on biographies of artists, architects, designers, and adjacent subjects).

Thanks for stopping by, Dancing Dollar, and nice job with the translation. I reviewed the article within the scope of WP:NPP, that is to say, New page reviewing is mainly about deciding whether a new article will be marked as approved and accepting it into Wikipedia, or initiating one of several deletion procedures. So, yup, I didn't WP:PROD it. ;) As for how I would rate it, IMO, it's WP:BCLASS, not WP:ACLASS. One relatively easy improvement, just by way of example, would be to convert the article's green links to blue. Good luck! As the founder of WP:WPWW, I admit my own bias towards articles about women writers and their works. But it's interesting to see this biography be taken to AfD for the second time. While for sure, all articles can be improved, the comment on the AfD page by SouthernNights (I didn't realize until now...) seems on point. What really catches my attention, though, is that the article has had 631 pageviews in the last 90 days. I know we don't use pageviews as a measure of WP:N, but IMO, the article has some amount of relevancy in today's society, so I'm glad I made the effort to translate it from DE-WP, no matter what the outcome of the AfD might be. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:26, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

SusunW, I was just looking at View History of Mary Zirin's biography and I noticed you used a script called "User:Ohconfucius/dashes.js". If I were to install it (there's an install button on the page), what does it do? --Rosiestep (talk) 15:02, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
It fixes hyphens and makes them en dashes. I use a Spanish keyboard, configured to English format and if there is such a key as an en dash, I have no clue where to find it. (Em dash on the other hand is auto converted by typing two hyphens.) Besides which, it interrupts my typing flow. So I just type hyphens and use the script to fix it. What does this mean: ref= none

Dear Rosiestep, i thought i followed the cite-book-rules and now i find this ref=none you had to add to avoid some "conflict"? Hi Naomi Hennig, and thanks for stopping by. I have a script installed which shows "Harv errors" on a page in blaringly bold, black letters. "Harv errors" are most common when the editor uses the "cite book"/"cite journal"/"cite ..." templates in Bibliography and Further reading sections, e.g., without <ref></ref>. To disable the error message, you simply add |ref=none into that citation. More info here (Category:Harv and Sfn template errors) and here ({{Citation}}). P.S. Please note that this site copies older versions of Wikipedia pages (in this case, the 2017 version of the Vedette (cabaret) article). They give attribution at the bottom of the page.
