Wow. What a cool remark to make. I totally respect you as a writer and as a scientist by the way (I googled your publications when you sent me an email with your name). I like to rip tits a little, cause that is...how I am. I just am used to that sort of interaction in science and the military. Just makes things more fun.

I remember that remark you made to TTT saying you could be motivated by stickers. What I really like about it, was that you were honest about something where others deny it. BTW, I would hope we could make things POSITIVE, not just negative (iow, not "stop doing low hit count", but "start doing high hit count"). Of course it comes to the same thing if you think about time usage just being shifted. But I just like the mindset more of encouraging people, rather than demeaning them (I may want to tease the Somerset Cricket club guy though).

In terms of your point on display...I think a display at FA, like in a table at the top, showing the articles and their hit counts would be a nice graphic that might influence behavior. Sandy is so set in her ways though...and so concentrated on firefighting and working harder like Boxer...rather than thinking about strategy...she would probably not go for it. (Like I hate that page with all the stuff on the same place and running in just a list. GA is way nicer in having candidates in categories, in having the reviews on different pages.) That said, there are easy ways to do things ad hoc without needing to go through consensus and all. Like a self made ladder board. Or even just ad hoc set of barnstar. "you promoted a 10,000 view per month article".

• I was a wiki-noob when I wrote that comment; last year's WikiCup showed me the dark side of the "reward mentality" that Sandy complains about (with good reason) so often. Truth is, I'm a competitive person, and I enjoy competing with other like-minded people (such as other Wikipedia editors, or in a past life before fatherhood, chess players) as a means to push the self harder and accomplish more than one might do otherwise. Problem with the WikiCup (for those who are trying to win it) is it boils down to who can pump out the highest volume of content that few will read (and thus marginal benefit to Wikipedia). I've been thinking about an "elite" version, where points can only be gained from bring core/vital topics to GA/FA... but I imagine there would be little interest. Most people are here to work on their narrow topics areas (including me for the most part), and there's nothing really wrong with that; but I do think it's a good idea to brainstorm about ways to improve the "important" and/or highly viewed articles. Something simple like 1 point for a GA/FL, 2 points for an FA and multiply by hit count. And have a laddar board. I guess divide it for co-noms. I think a laddar board would work better than a Cup. I would want a bot to help with checking pageviews, but I think it could be made tractable. Checking on lower categories, project assinged is too tricky. But those are all controlled and organized.

I don't know how specific your interests are, but would think that if you like biology, that there are popular animals or diseases or the like. Even within mushrooms, there are some on the VA list. Yep, every one of those fungus articles is on my "To-do" list, or has already been started in a file here on my hard drive. Unfortunately, I'm the kind of person who can't work too long uninterrupted on one thing, or it becomes more like work and less like play (and I'm mostly on Wiki to feed my play!) so I usually work offline on articles as the muse dictates, and then dump here when I think it's ready—excuse the metaphor :). I like your idea of a ladder board, but I suspect that ultimately it will be "politically incorrect" to make article development into a competition (but c'mon, it's fun!) Maybe Wikiproject CORE? Hello, a fungus is is need of help

Hello Sasata, I have been told your the mushroom guru of Wikipedia and thought I could appeal to you for help. I have found a genus of fungus, Spathularia, that desperately needs help and I have been working on expanding it. I have very little knowledge of fungi and was hoping you could guide me through all of the unfamiliar vocabulary and to good references. Hi Krustev, another Jimmy Butler protégé? Sure, I can help. For starters, check out the MycoBank page on the genus here. This has a short description of characteristics of the genus, which you could try to translate from mycological jargon into plain English (I can help with terms you get stuck on), and put in a "description" section. Try not to focus so much on specific details of each species, but more about the genus. In the meantime, I'll put together a literature list and add it to the talk page; some sources will be obscure and very difficult to get (interlibrary loans may be the way to go), some will be in foreign languages, but others I will have access to and could email you directly. FAC will be tough... this will definitely require getting the obscure/foreign language sources. Take a look at Cyathus for an example of a genus-level fungus article to get a feel at what the final product might look like (Spathularia would probably only have about 20 references though, from what I've seen in a quick literature search.) I'll try to have a literature list up on the article talk page by tomorrow to allow ample time to track down sources. Perhaps what I'll do while you're working on the genus article is bring each of the species articles to GA level; this will make it easier to find and organize information. Well, I think all the FAs on mushrooms are good! See Category:FA-Class Fungi articles. Also, check out Boletus frostii, Boletus mirabilis, Boletus pinophilus, Boletus pulcherrimus, and Boletus zelleri , which are good articles on species in the same genus; you might want to peruse them for some guidance on how to structure your article. I have been looking through the article and I think all of the necessary information for GA is there, except for the taxonomy. I have been digging around and can find nothing on the taxonomy but the taxonomy of the similar species. I would assume that it is similar. Hmmm... I'm reluctant to get into this yet; for such an well-known topic, the article appears too short, and it seems like many more hours of research and revisions should be applied before broaching FAC territory. Have you visited a library and consulted all available relevant textbooks? Have you performed an exhaustive search of scholarly literature? This is what the article needs at this point, and I'd rather spend time PRing an article that was more developed (see criteria 1b and 1c). Hi Alan, thanks for uploading (and identifying at MO) that picture. The Mushroom Observer template only works at Wikimedia Commons. If you'd like I can transfer that picture there. While you're here, I was wondering if you could help with some images of Psilocybe tampanensis of Workman's that you uploaded (File:Psilocybe.tampanensis.one.jpg, File:Psilocybe.tampanensis.two.jpg, and File:Psilocybe.tampanensis.spores.jpg). I'm having the article assessed for GA review here, and the reviewer has noted that there's no indication that Workman has released the images under a license compatible for Wikipedia use. I don't suppose there's any way that you could confirm that he's okay with releasing these images (under a CC-by-SA-3.0 license), or failing that, have him contact me either here or by email? It would be a shame to have to remove the pics, but that might have to happen to promote the article. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer, and thanks for your kind words—I have a "to-do" list of about 400 fungal taxa articles I want to improve (and it keeps growing all the time, argh), including many of the "shroomy" articles, so I'll be here for a while.
