Edits to Pune

[edit]

Thanks for your contributions to Pune! It's a tough time to join in editing Pune: there's been a lot of major changes lately, and a whole bunch of us are busy getting rid of the extraneous matter (of which Pune has tons!), and really polishing everything up to make a real fantastic article. Of course, you're welcome to join in! Remember: be bold, and welcome to Wikipedia! -- Gaurav (talk) 17:55, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Vaibhavforjoy: of course it is, and I don't dispute that. I'm not sure that it deserves to be in the second paragraph, though: I feel that the first few paragraphs should be a general introduction to the city, and not a detailed history, which should be reserved for the "History" section - where all the information you've added is present in full, including a reference to the Chattrapati in Satara. As far as I know, under the jagirdari of Shahaji and Shivaji (administered directly by Dadoji Kondev?), the town was developed somewhat, but had no major political role or historical significance (apart from being the residence of the future king of the Marathas). Shivaji's capital was always at Raigad. It was a hundred years later, under the Peshwe, that the town became first the seat of the Peshwe, and then - as the Peshwe assumed greater significance - the effective capital of the Maratha empire at its greatest expanse.
This is the story as detailed in Pune's history section, so if I've got something wrong, please feel free to correct it as much as you like! However, I do feel that the intricacies of this story are not useful in the introductory paragraph; I'm consciously trying to follow the style of other city articles, such as Mumbai and New York City, which have no more than a single sentence or so on the early history of the city, and much more about the present conditions in and significance of their respective cities. Since the Peshwe period was so important to the development of central Pune, I felt that a small paragraph is required, but I think we should try to keep it at a minimum size, and avoid bringing up Shivaji (who had very little to do with Pune's early development, and whose relationship with the city is clearly set out in the History section of the website) and merely mention the Peshwe "in passing". Personally, I'd love more information on Pune's current economic growth, but there are so few references to work with!
Another thing: you mention Pune as being "one of the richest, culturally developed city" is the Deccan. Do you have a citation for this? Otherwise, I'm afraid the other prominent Deccan cities - Hyderabad, Mysore, Bangalore, among many others - will complain that we're being overly grandious. Also, the line seems to me to be too close to peacock terms, which is against Wikipedia policy.
Personally, I'd love to have more hard facts in the first paragraph - "Pune has one of the highest rate of growth of any city in India[citation]", "Pune has the highest rate of growth of any city in Maharashtra[citation]"; I'd love to see many of these facts you are bringing to the article (Shivaji's contribution to the city, Pune's status as a developed, cultured city) - with proper citations, of course! - to be inserted into the appropriate sections of the article.
I'm not going to revert your edit, however, User:Tejas81 seems pretty unhappy with your previous edits, so he might revert it later today. I'd suggest that you argue for your side on the Pune discussion page; if you can convince me or other edits working on this page, we could try and convince Tejas81 to insert a reference to Shivaji into the second paragraph. However, I still believe that the article works better without that reference.
In any case, you obviously care about the Pune article; and it's always great to have more people working on our articles. Looking forward to having many more arguments in the future! -- Gaurav (talk) 07:59, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and you forgot to sign your last post to me: if you end your post with four tildes (~~~~), Wikipedia will automatically include your username and the time, so it's easier to see who's talking and to whom. Cheers, Gaurav (talk) 08:03, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your refutation on Talk:Pune! It's really well argued, and I'm convinced. I'd be great if you could merge your content into the article - I'm sure all the history articles in Maharashtra will benefit from your information on Pune's early days. You'd have to cite the books you got the information from, but I'm sure the trouble will be worth it - it'll much improve Pune's "history" section. Thanks again! -- Gaurav (talk) 17:53, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
