Distorted image[edit]

Resolved

Regarding image: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/97/Red_Rice_House..jpg

Whilst this image appears in the correct proportions when viewed in it's full resolution, It appears distorted in the other sizes (too wide), e.g. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/97/Red_Rice_House..jpg/800px-Red_Rice_House..jpg Other images which were uploaded at the same time, appear perfectly ok; e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Red_Rice_House._View_from_the_front.jpg Please. Can you correct it.

I had asked in the 'teahouse', and they answered: "I can see why the image is distorted as the original height to width ratio is 1.45 and all the rations shown are 1.33, but I don't know how to correct it. You might want to submit a request at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop explaining what the issue is and what you want doing to it."

 Done Fixed the problem by simply resaving the image. I have no idea what could have caused that behaviour, though. I also removed the watermark from it (please see WP:WATERMARK and upload watermarkless versions of your images, if possible). —Quibik (talk) 14:03, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Please remove Watermark. Lil'Monster Heart (talk) 00:49, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Cleaned one up. I also extracted the madonnaunderground.nl watermark. If anyone else would like to use it, download the subtract and divide layers and place them on the bottom of the image (where the watermark is) with the sub layer below the div layer and set their blend modes to "subtract" and "divide" respectively. You will likely also need to scale them because the watermark size is not consistent across images. For GIMP users, I also created a more convenient XCF version. This won't probably remove 100% of the watermark, but makes the job much easier nevertheless. —Quibik (talk) 13:06, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 Done: PawełMM (talk) 10:33, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible to add more rooms around the image, but it will be blank. I don't see a reasonable cause to do that. PawełMM (talk) 10:33, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The reason is that it looks better.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 10:40, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
 Done I agree that it looks better with a little whitespace, and the reason is because in a thumbnail image the border should not 'touch' the image. It acts as a kind of mount. I also converted the images to grayscale and cleaned up the background. The oval introduced around the middle image looked a bit slapdash. nagualdesign (talk) 00:08, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion:

 Done - I uploaded a better version. Should be satisfactory now. And the quality of the first upload is not poor because the film is 98 years old. The quality is poor because of high compression. In other words, the culprit is modern technology and the modern notion that media is better served compressed into barely recognizable goo. – JBarta (talk) 21:21, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

There's an old saying... "garbage in... garbage out". It means if you start with garbage, the end result will be garbage. Why am I telling you this? Because the image you have supplied is garbage. It looks like you just snapped a photo of a photo. Half the image is full of reflection. If you're really serious about "restoring" the image, then get it professionally scanned... or in some other way upload a quality high resolution image. Make a little effort here. That way there's at least a chance of getting a decent result. In addition, personal photos of no apparent use and with no useful description have a way of getting deleted from Commons not to mention ignored around here. At the very least you could make the image potentially useful to this encyclopedia by adding information such as date, place, etc etc. I know, I'm a mean person... but somebody needed to tell you these things, and if you do them you might actually get some help. – JBarta (talk) 17:51, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

@Jbarta - Thank you for your response. I don't have the 'quality high resolution image' of this garbage. Also, someone else snapped a photo of this garbage, not me. I don't have the original garbage. I'm just trying to get some help from wikipedia's graphic designers to restore my family's garbage the way it is. It's a very old garbage, no one knows its date. Well, thanks, everyone. I'll go now. Request: The original image (transferred from Flickr) had a badly overexposed sky and under-exposed landscape. I made an HDR version using a lightened and a darkened version of the original. I love how it worked for the foreground, with the detail on the stone wall and the reflective car. But, the sky is now far too dark. Could someone take the sky and lighten it? Not quite as bright as the original, but realistic. If you can do it in GIMP and give instructions (so i could do it myself for other images) I'd be floored.

(Of course, if you think my edit sucks and want to work solely off the original, go for. Anything to make it look nicer.)Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:16, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

And Sartre should be last (if possible).--GoPTCN 08:19, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've reversed Sarte and Nietzsche left for right. (The individual images themselves have also been reversed so that both figures are also facing inwards.) If you want a different format, however, you'll need to create a new composite collage image file and upload it to a new file page. Centpacrr (talk) 10:46, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just a comment... I'm not a big fan of reversing portraits. I realize it's done often, but that doesn't necessarily mean we should do it. – JBarta (talk) 14:39, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The non-reversed version with Sartre and the left and Nietzsche on the right is still available in the file history. Centpacrr (talk) 23:55, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's all well and good, but the point is that the reversed version might be used in an article. To me, that's slightly unencyclopedic and a shade less than accurate. – JBarta (talk) 01:35, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
File deleted. Centpacrr (talk) 04:26, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
