Submissions declined[edit]

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Pauline Rowson

I am querying why the reference sources quoted and the article for submission keeps getting declined when these are valid external sources and when other authors who have fewer cited sources and fewer books published by reputable and international publishing houses are accepted. This is a genuine attempt to create an information source for users. Pauline Rowson is also listed as a notable alumni on an existing Wikipedia page.

Submission declined on 12 December 2012 by ChrisGualtieri (talk). This submission's references do not adequately evidence the subject's notability—see the guidelines on the notability of people and the golden rule. Please improve the submission's referencing, so that the information is verifiable, and there is clear evidence of why the subject is notable and worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia.Arogerspr (talk) 18:09, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The references are, in order:
  1. Her biography at lovereading.co.uk, which to me looks more like a bookseller than an independent, reliable source that is itself the subject of editorial oversight.
  2. Her biography at FantasticFiction.co.uk, which does not show any evidence of editorial oversight either. It might be a reliable source; I'm not entirely sure - but much of that biography seems to be cropped from other reviews or articles, and it would be much better to cite the original sources.
  3. Her own publisher, clearly not an independent source.
  4. Wikipedia, which does not consider itself reliable.
Besides these problems, the sources don't actually support all the draft's content - for example, none of the sources (not even the Wikipedia article) mention Rowson obtained a Diploma in Marketing or that her books were translated into Indonesian. You do have some sources that are truly reliable and independent, such as the Portsmouth News, and that might be turned into references, but currenty they're just mentioned as external links. Furthermore, it would be a great help to both the reviewers and to the readers if you could use inline citations and footnotes to clarify which reference supports which of the draft's statements. See also WP:REFB for more help on referencing. Huon (talk) 21:55, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I contemplated composing a similar reply to Huon, noticing the local news sources, but wasn't really sure if together they were sufficient to pass the article, being all restricted to Portsmouth and a few other places, rather than nationwide coverage. If you've got anything like a book review in The Telegraph or The Guardian, that would be an excellent source to use. Also, I wouldn't suggest in the article that she is notable for getting a Marketing Diploma, as it's not really that significant or worthy of notice (though you can just state the fact she has one as a biographical detail if it's sourced). Hi, I need help with the "footnote" part of my article. I can't avoid duble entries. I couldn't understand what I'm doing wrong. I'd appreciate if you could check it. Thanks! :( Mach22591 (talk) 04:22, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the duplicate references and renamed those that weren't actually cited in the article "external links". If that wasn't the problem you meant, please be a little more explicit in your description. Huon (talk) 17:48, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Huon, I don't know how you made it but everything seems to be set now :) Actually I have two more questions about my article:

  • I'm not sure if the resources I used in composing my draft are satisfactory in terms of reliability. Since I'm trying to write a biography of a living person who is in civil aviation industry in Turkey - which is relatively underdeveloped and new compared to the USA and Europe - I have difficulty in finding resources such as papers or books to use in my article. All I managed to procure are from articles from newspapers or magazines online. I tried to choose the best possible, most reliable ones among them (such as Hurriyet). However, I am still not sure if my sourcing is good enough to prove relibility and trueness of my draft. Moreover, with this concern in my mind, while editing I am have exagerated citing so much to frasturate readers. Therefore I would really appreciate if you could evalute my draft and share your suggestions for improvement, if you have any.
  • Secondly, if now - after submission for review - if I add pictures or make any changes in editing, do I have to re-submit my article?

Thank you very much in advance! Mach22591 (talk) 12:00, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The draft's sources are indeed somewhat problematic. I can't read Turkish and haven't checked those sources - Hurriyet is clearly a reliable source, and going by the article titles they seem to cover Öztürk in some detail. The English sources, however, either mention him in passing without providing any details, or, like the German Aerospace Industries Association sources, don't mention him at all. The draft should be based on what reliable sources say about Öztürk; if the sources don't mention him, they don't belong in the article. The most problematic source is Öztürk own website; that's a primary source which we should avoid - in particular, we should not use it as the lone source for claims that might be seen as self-aggrandizing. Even worse are extremely positive paragraphs that don't cite any sources at all, such as this: "Ali İsmet Öztürk has been admired worldwide [...] for his brilliance and maturity of style as well." Says who? If you're having trouble to find non-Turkish sources, his admiration apparently can't be quite that widespread. Besides, for such a claim we would not just need sources that admire Özturk, but sources actually discussing how popular he is.
Of course you can continue to improve the draft while it's awaiting review, and there's no need to re-submit it unless you accidentally remove the submission template in the process. The more you improve the draft now, the greater the chances that it will pass review (though images are not that relevant - they may be nice to have, but they won't have much of an effect on acceptance; the sources are much more important for that).
You may want to add links to related Wikipedia articles (for example the ILA Berlin Air Show or Istanbul). Such links are created by double square brackets: [[ILA Berlin Air Show]] or [[Istanbul]]. For more information on links, see Help:Link. Huon (talk) 17:36, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you again for your comments Huon! I think I see your point. My article has been already rejected on the first of February tough, there were more than 900 articles waiting for review on these days. So I didn't have any chance to make improvements in the light of your suggestions :( I don't get how quickly my turn has come?! Anyway.. What if I translate some of the citations in English, would that be of help? Because there are a bunch of references in the Turkish media, from third parties, supporting my draft.. I am not making them up at the end :) Concerning non-Turkish sources, the porblem may arise because of the time period in which he was greatly active internationally. Yes, it's impossible to find an academic paper about him but I guess news and articles from foreign media archives are either not public or they are not available online for that period of time. Actually I'm quite unexperienced dealing with non-Turkish sources :( I plan to keep it simple and concantrate on the notability about those "firsts" introduced by him into the Turkish civil aviation field. Regarding this issue, my main and most remarkable source was the "Precidencey Of The Republic Of Turkey Official Web Page". Since it is written in Turkish, would that be sufficient if I translated in English? (It is written in the article that AİÖ is the first civil aerobatics pilot and the president of the republic of Turkey offers his appreciations to him for being nominated "Best Solo Display" in many international airshows and representing his country in the best possible way.) As I wrote, I'll try to keep it simple while re-editing and I would be grateful if you could keep providing assisrtance meanwhile. Thnx :) Mach22591 (talk) 07:12, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

need advice on editing article to qualify for submission[edit]

Re: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/ThriftyComputer

Hello,

My article was reviewed earlier this month, on January 6, and deemed not suitable for publication. I made some major edits to the document and resubmitted it on January 7, but have not heard anymore about its status. What should be my next steps in following up about having it re-reviewed?

Hopefully it's ready for prime time now, but if not, I'm prepared to make whatever changes are necessary to have it published. If this is the case, I would really appreciate some further, more detailed guidance in this regard.

Thanks in advance to whomever is available to assist!

Best, Deborah Deborah Oster Pannell (talk) 05:33, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The draft wasn't submitted for another review; the "submission declined" message contains instructions: "When you are ready to resubmit, click here." I have now re-submitted it for you. I've also removed some unnecessary adjectives (such as "early" financial difficulties five years after the founding). I'm not sure how the founder's medical history is relevant to the company; I see no indication it had any effect on the business beyond being uncomfortable to Hellinger, and the sources discussing it sound more like holiday feel-good stories than business news. Huon (talk) 17:48, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please help. I thought I resubmitted the article on Dr Beric John Croome for review twice now, and both times the reviewer FoCuSandLeArN can't find it in the review queue. What am I doing wrong? I edited the article as per the editor's suggestions and resubmitted by pressing the "click here" button and I made sure I pressed the "save page" buttom after I'd edited. What am i not doing correctly? Your help will be much appreciated. With thanks Judy Aztar Press (talk) 13:23, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That was due to some <ref> tags without closing </ref> tags. I have fixed that. However, I don't think the sources suffice to show that Croome has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. We need such coverage both to establish Croome's notability and to allow our readers to verify the draft's content. Most of the current sources seem to originate with Croome himself or with organizations he's closely affiliated with. By the way, if you are Judy Croome, you may want to read our guideline on conflicts of interest - writing about a topic you're that closely associated with is discouraged. My submission, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Epic_Proportions_Tour&diff=prev&oldid=529650455, has been waiting for review since 12/24/12! In the past it has only taken a few days for a review. Why so long? Matt Butcher (talk) 19:35, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is not currently submitted for review, you have not resubmitted it since the last review. Roger (talk) 19:50, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have submitted the draft for you. You can do so yourself by adding {{subst:submit}} to the very top of the draft page. Huon (talk) 01:55, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wow thank you SOOOO much. Thw Wiki formats are like none I've seen before but I'm learning! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mattbutch (talkcontribs) 21:50, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

adding pictures to an article[edit]

how do i add a picture relevant to the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Psychsgirl (talkcontribs) 21:23, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That depends on the image's copyright status. If it's licensed under a free license such as the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License, you can upload it to the Wikimedia Commons via their Upload Wizard. Once it's uploaded, the picture tutorial explains how to add an image to an article. If the image is non-free, it probably will not be acceptable for Wikipedia at all.
On an unrelated, note, the draft needs to show that Psychoetry ‎has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of him, such as news coverage or reviews in reputable music magazines, to establish his notability and to allow the readers to verify the article's content. Without such sources we cannot accept the submission. Huon (talk) 01:53, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
