z"l is an abbreviation in Hebrew for zichrono livracha or zichrona livracha, which mean "his/her memory for a blessing." It is common in Judaism when mentioning the name of someone who has died to add z"l after the name in writing. When speaking about someone who has died, it is common to add the words zichrono/zichrona livracha. People also say alav hashalom or aleha hashalom, Hebrew for "peace be upon him/her". This is roughly the equivalent of "May he/she rest in peace."
