This is simply wrong, and I apologize for the hasty edit. Hoop stress is not a shear stress. However, it is indeed still a principal stress being that it exists where shear stress equals zero. The term “normal stress” as previously written by a user would have been sufficient and as such I added it back and added the inclusion of a few lines classifying lo undo

Hoop stress is in fact a tangential stress, meaning it is a shear stress. There are two types of stresses, normal stresses, and shear stresses. Therefore, they are mutually exclusive and cannot be used interchangeably. undo
