Untitled

Black Clouds & Silver Linings is the tenth studio album of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. It is scheduled to be released through Roadrunner Records on June 23, 2009. [1][2] Drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci produced the album, while Paul Northfield returned from 2007's Systematic Chaos as mixer. The album will be released as a single CD, 3-disc Special Edition with instrumental mixes and cover songs, double vinyl LP, as well as a Deluxe Collector's Edition Box Set. The cover songs will be revealed—one per week—during the six week period prior to the album's release, beginning on May 19.[2]

Background

Dream Theater began work on the album in October 2008.[2] Mike Portnoy described Black Clouds & Silver Linings as, "a Dream Theater album with "A Change of Seasons", "Octavarium", "Learning to Live", "Pull Me Under" and "The Glass Prison" all on one album."[3] Jordan Rudess later explained, "We've been entering into the Gothic domain quite a bit on this album. There's nothing like a really, really powerful and cool choir sound."[4] In an interview with Eddie Trunk, Portnoy stated that the album would be around 75 minutes and consist of "four epics and two singles". Portnoy also confirmed that the album's cover was created by Hugh Syme; artist of Octavarium and Systematic Chaos. Portnoy confirmed that "The Shattered Fortress" would be the final song of his Twelve-step Suite.[5] Lyrics for the album were written by Portnoy and John Petrucci.[6] A video was shot in March 2009 for the album's first single, "A Rite of Passage".[7] Dream Theater will support the album on a world tour and on the second Progressive Nation tour.[1]. The name of the album comes from a Mike Portnoy idea: he was coming back to New York by car in a cloudy day and he felt in the sky the same atmosphere of the album which, at the same time has a lot of silver linings (melodic parts).

Songs

A Rite of Passage

Unlike the band's last album, Systematic Chaos, Petrucci's lyrics on Black Clouds & Silver Linings are about non-fiction topics. "A Rite of Passage" involves Freemasonry.[6] "A Rite of Passage" was the album's first single; it was available for free download through Roadrunner Record's website for one day in May.[8] Its music video—also the first of the album—debuted on May 8.[9]

The Shattered Fortress

"The Shattered Fortress" is the final part of Portnoy's Twelve-step Suite.[10]

The Best of Times

"The Best of Times" is about Mike Portnoy's father, who died due to cancer. "I just wanted to write something that was a tribute to our life together," said Portnoy who played the song for his father prior to his death.[11]

The official track listing and track lengths have been revealed along with pre-order information for the album on Roadrunner Records's online store.[12]

Those who pre-order will be able to download a newly recorded cover song each week beginning on May 19, 2009 until the album's release. Some box sets will contain a "silver ticket" which entitles the purchaser to a meet and greet with the band.[14]

Reception

Rich Wilson, author of Lifting Shadows, previewed the album for Metal Hammer. He called the album "Dream Theater’s finest and most balanced album in a decade."[10]
