Australia and India qualified for the final as the top two teams in the league stage of the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship. While both teams had the highest number of points at the due to the COVID-19 pandemic and multiple series being postponed, the league standings were determined by win percentage.[2]

Walking into the final India held the top position in the ICC Men's Test Team Rankings while Australia secured the second spot. Australia made their debut in the world test final, while India, who were defeated by New Zealand in 2021, were without several key players due to injuries.[3] Their recent encounter in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy served as the last test tournament between the two teams. Notably, both teams had historically faced challenges at the Oval. Australia had won only seven out of the 38 Test matches played there, while India hada managed just two victories.[4]

Just weeks before the final, the ICC removed the "soft signal rule" and the rule would not be in effect starting from the World Test Championship final.[5]

On 7 June 2023, on the eve of the first day's play of the World Test Championship final, ICC had announced that arrangements have been made in advance such as preparation of backup pitch for the final and tight security measures as safety precautionary methods from the intervention of Just Stop Oil protestors.[6][7]
