FC Arsenal Kyiv (Ukrainian: ФК "Арсенал" Київ) is a professional football club in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
History
In 1950s there was different Arsenal Kyiv, which in 1958 won the UkrainianSSR Championship. In 1963 Arsenal was renamed in Temp and few years later was folded. Current Arsenal was based on the first team of CSKA Kyiv. CSKA Kyiv was founded in 1934 in Kharkiv under the name UVO Kharkiv. In 1935 the team moved to Kiev and renamed to BO (Budynok ofitseriv) Kyiv. In 1947-1956 the team was called OBО Kyiv and in 1952, under this name, the team reached the semifinal stage of Soviet National Cup. in 1957 the team played under the name ОSК Kyiv, in 1957-1959 – SКVО Kyiv, in 1960-1971 – SKA Kyiv. In 1972 the team moved to Chernihiv and changed its name to SК Chernihiv. In 1976 moved back to Kiev as SКА. In 1981-1982, the team had had its last Pervaya Liga stint at the second level of Soviet football. In 1992 the team was renamed to ZS Оriyana, in 1993 – CSK ZSU. In 1994 the team was fusioned with FC Borysfen Boryspil under the name CSKA-Borysfen Boryspil.
Ukrainian Premier League (1995-Present)
The club is currently participating in the Ukrainian Premier League, where it has appeared since the 1995-96 season.
In 1996 two teams split into CSKA Kyiv and FC Borysfen Boryspil. After 2001 season CSKA Kyiv underwent another reformation. Its first team was bought out by city's government changing name from CSKA to Arsenal.
The clubs greatest achievements include a successful UEFA Cup run in the season of 2001-02, defeating the now defunct Finnish side FC Jokerit and Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade. The club has also managed to appear in the domestic cup's finals twice (1998 and 2001), losing both times: first against FC Dynamo Kyiv and then against FC Shakhtar Donetsk.
The club was owned by the city's government, which has sought to abandon its numerous sports holdings. Because of this, Arsenal has been struggling significantly over the past few years financially, resorting to loaning many of its players. Throughout 2006, the club faced major financial problems and in May 2007 it was announced that the club will be demoted, however soon afterwards it was revealed that Arsenal was purchased by Ukrainian oligarch, Vadym Rabynovich. The new owner quickly replaced the manager, and started actively financing the club and it's transfers.
