The Nolans (billed as The Nolan Sisters before 1979) are a group of sisters from Ireland, who enjoyed success as a pop vocal act in the United Kingdom in the 1970s and early 1980s. The group, best-known for their 1979 song "I'm In The Mood For Dancing", continued to be active until 2005 with varying line-ups and had sustained success in Japan. Several of the sisters have pursued solo careers in acting and television presenting. |

The Nolan family consisted of Irish parents Tommy and Maureen (both singers), six daughters and two sons. The family moved from Dublin to Blackpool in 1962 and formed a family singing group. "The Singing Nolans" toured the Northern club circuit for several years with a mixed lineup of males and females, before the five oldest girls broke away to form The Nolan Sisters in 1974. |

The original line up consisted of Anne (born 12 November 1950), Denise (born 9 April 1952), Maureen (born 14 June 1954), Linda (born 23 February 1959 and Bernie (born 17 October 1960). |

The sisters became popular on variety programs on British television during the 1970s and released several records featuring their versions of various popular songs. In 1978 they released an LP on Target Records containing their own versions of twenty well-known songs entitled 20 Giant Hits, which reached the Top 3 on the UK album chart. They also supported Engelbert Humperdinck on a successful tour around the United States, and came fourth in the "A Song For Europe" competition with the Hawaiian-flavoured "Harry my Honolulu Lover." The group was subsequently signed to Epic Records (a division of CBS). It was around this time that Denise left the group to pursue a solo career. She was replaced with the youngest member of the family, Coleen (born 12 March 1965). |

The period during which the group were signed to Epic (1979-1984) was their most commercially successful. Their first Top 40 single ("Spirit, Body and Soul") was issued in 1979 and was taken from their self-titled album (called in Japan「恋のハッピーデート(koino-happy-date) 」). These would mark their last releases under the name "The Nolan Sisters." |

At the end of 1979, the group released the disco-flavoured single "I'm In The Mood For Dancing; (called in Japan「ダンシング・シスター(dancing-sister) 」" which became their signature tune, as well as a huge hit for the quintet. It shot to the UK Top 3 and became a success all over the world, particularly in Japan (where the group would remain popular for many years, eventually selling more than 9 million albums). The single was taken from their Nolan Sisters album (although "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" marked their first release under which they were simply billed "The Nolans"). Shortly after this time Anne Nolan left the group to have a baby, making The Nolans a four-piece. |

Success continued into 1980 with the singles "Don't Make Waves" (#12) and "Gotta Pull Myself Together" (#9). These tracks were later found on the album Making Waves, released towards the end of the year. This album spent more weeks on the UK chart (33 in total) than any other Nolans release. The album also spawned two more Top 20 singles - "Who's Gonna Rock You" (#12, 1980), and "Attention To Me" (#9, 1981). The former was co-written by Billy Ocean. |

1981 also saw the release of a new single - "Chemistry" (#15), which would later appear on the 1982 album Portrait. This album would become their second Top 10 and also provided their final Top 20 single "Don't Love Me Too Hard" (#14). It's follow-up, "Crashing Down" rather ironically, failed to chart, as did the remainder of their singles on the Epic label. Towards the end of the year, a compilation album entitled Altogether was released, containing all of their hit singles on the Epic label. It sold in moderation. |

By this stage Anne had rejoined the group, which operated as a five-piece until 1984 when Linda left to marry the group's ex-tour manager Brian Hudson, and to pursue a solo career. She was nicknamed the "Naughty Nolan" after launching her career with a near-naked publicity shotfact. |

==Post-Epic and Japanese success== |

Since breaking away from Epic, The Nolans have been signed to several record labels (mostly minor ones). The remainder of their work in the 1980s mostly consisted of cover versions of popular songs (their Epic label albums had generally consisted of some covers plus some original songs). An album of covers entitled "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was released on Towerbell Records in 1984 and became their final UK Top 40 album. |

The group's work in the latter 1980s mostly consisted of cover versions of popular songs (their Epic label albums had generally consisted of some covers plus some original songs). The covers album "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was released on Towerbell Records in 1984 and became their final UK Top 40 album. They appeared as guests on the second episode of the 1987 comedy series Filthy Rich & Catflap, playing themselves in a blackmail plot and performing "I'm In The Mood For Dancing". |
|||
Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s the foursome continued to perform together as well as concentrating on their own solo projects. They remained popular in the far east and in 1992 became the first British group to be awarded the Tokubstsu Kikaku Sho (Japanese Grammy) for best foreign recording artist. They also did a four week tour of the country (during which time they found themselves appearing on a nude television show!) and signed a six-album deal there. |

Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s the foursome continued to perform together as well as concentrating on their own solo projects. They remained popular in Japan (with the four-woman lineup of Bernie, Anne, Maureen and Colleen) , signing a six-album deal there with Teichiku Recordsfact and recording three new albums purely for the Japanese market: Playback Part 2, Tidal Wave and Hottest Place On Earth. Much of their material from this period consisted of covers of Japanese pop songs with English lyrics. |
|||
Major changes came to the group in 1994 when Coleen left the group to have a baby, and Bernie (who had been the lead singer of the group since she was 13) left to pursue an acting career. At this point The Nolans simply consisted of Anne and Maureen. |
|||
In 1992 they became the first British group to be awarded the Tokubstsu Kikaku Sho (Japanese Grammy) for best foreign recording artist, and toured the country for four weeks. Compilations of their Japanese material, often featuring remixes and some featuring other artists as well, were also regularly released throughout the 1990s and 2000s. |

==Recent activities== |
|||
Major changes came to the group in 1994 when Coleen left the group to have a baby, while Bernie, who had been the lead singer of the group since she was 13, left to pursue an acting career. At this point The Nolans simply consisted of Anne and Maureen. A re-recorded version of "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" reached #51 in the UK in 1995. |
|||
By 2004, the line-up consisted of Maureen and Anne, together with Anne's daughter Amy and her cousin Julia. Their act was largely cabaret, and they performed throughout Europe in clubs and also, particularly, in Japan. The group disbanded in 2005 when Maureen moved into Musical Theatre. |
|||
From 1999, the line-up consisted of Maureen and Anne, together with Anne's daughter Amy and her cousin Julia Duckworth. Their act largely consisted of cabaret performances throughout Europe and Japan. The group disbanded in 2005. |
|||
The other sisters have continued to work in showbusiness. Bernadette is an actress who has played a continuing role in the police drama The Bill, and also had long term part in Brookside. Bernie toured in Mums The Word in early 2007 and returned to Blackpool North Pier in Soap Queens (And Kings!) in the summer months. Coleen is a television presenter, and Denise and Linda have toured with a production of Blood Brothers after completing a successful West End run in London. Linda toured with Prisoner Cell Block H - The Musical. Maureen has also appeared as Mrs Johnstone in the West End version of Blood Brothers, the 4th Nolan to do so earning recognition from Guinness World Records. |
|||
==Post-Nolans careers== |
|||
After completing two successful tours ofThe Magic Of Judy Garland Denise joined the tour of The Rat Pack Is Back reprising her Judy Garland tribute as the show's special guest. |
|||
All the sisters have continued to work in show business, pursuing careers in acting and musical theatre. As an actress, Bernie had prominent TV roles in Brookside and The Bill, and has toured in a number of stage shows. Coleen works as a television presenter, notably on This Morning and Loose Women. She has appeared regularly on the latter since 2004. |
|||
The original line up of The Nolans (minus Denise) reunited in August 2007 to sing on the TV show Loose Women. They sang "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" and, although they do not plan to get back together any time soon, they revealed that they would "never say never". |
|||
Maureen toured the UK in both 'Stardust', a musicals based show and the comedy play 'Girls Behind' in 2007. |
|||
2007 Pantomimes saw Maureen as the fairy at the Gala theatre, Durham, Bernie as the fairy in Manchester and Denise appeared at Broxbourne as the Wicked Queen. |
|||
Four of the sisters -- Bernie, Denise, Linda, and Maureen -- have played the role of Mrs Johnstone in the musical Blood Brothers. Amongst many theatre roles, Denise has frequently performed a Judy Garland tribute show, while Linda has toured with Prisoner Cell Block H - The Musical. |
|||
Their mother Maureen Nolan who helped launch their success died on December 30th 2007 after a 4 year battle with alzheimers. Linda returns to the West End on 14th January to play Mrs Johnstone once again - for 2 weeks only initially. Bernie begins another UK tour of 'Mum's The Word' in February 2008 (for 3 months) and Anne's Song - Anne's autobiography, is published on 27th March 2008. Coleen continues to be featured in almost every ladies magazine and her TV advertised DVD - a weight loss programme with Rosemary Conley is also in the shops. She continues to be the star of ITV's Loose Women show as the show returns to our screens in 2008. |
|||
The original line up of The Nolans (minus Denise) reunited in August 2007 to perform "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" on Loose Women. The band said that while there were no firm reunion plans, they would "never say never" to the prospect. |
|||
Their mother Maureen Nolan, who helped launch their early success died on December 30, 2007 after a four year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Anne Nolan released her autobiography Anne's Song on March 27 2008. |

In Japan, several single titles were changed for promotional purposes, a common practice in the Japanese market. "I’m In The Mood For Dancing" was retitled "Dancing Sister" (Japanese: 「ダンシング・シスター) and promoted with the catchphrase 'Five Fresh & Fruity Gals'. "Gotta Pull Myself Together" was promoted as "Koi-no Happy Date" (translation: happy date for our love). Two records were promoted via the ages of individual members: "Tokimeki Twenty" (translation: exciting twenty) for "Who's Gonna Rock You" referred to the then 20-year old Bernie, while "Natsu-wa Sixteen" '(translation: sixteen best suited for summer) was similarly linked to 16-year old Coleen in "Chemistry" promotion. Other title changes included "Yasashiku Love Me" '(translation: love me tenderly) for "Don't Love Me Too Hard" and "Love Koi-shikute"(translation: so in love) for "How Do I Survive".fact. |

The Devil Rides Out: In 1993 Bernie made her acting debut in ‘The Devil Rides Out’ – a show about devil worship & black magic. “My image is too squeaky clean” said the blonde haired star, “It's very hard to live up to & impossible to live down but this show may change things a little.” Bernie swapped her sequins for a black cape to star in a musical adaptation of Dennis Wheatley’s classic tale of the occult at Liverpool’s Neptune theatre. |
|||
“I was more nervous than I was when The Nolans toured with Frank Sinatra or did a Royal Variety Show because I was on my own. To turn around on stage & find your sisters not there was quite a frightening feeling after more than a decade of touring as a family,” she said. |
|||
Bernie played a spiritual medium who battles against the Devil & the Angel of Death. “The character is under the influence of a thoroughly wicked man who tears up the bible & spits on it & drinks blood as a human sacrifice. I have always wanted to do a musical & this one has soft rock songs that fit my taste – It also ends on an optimistic note with Good winning over Evil, which is how it should be.” |

|||
* "Gotta Pull Myself Together" → "Koi-no Happy Date" [literal meaning: Happy date for our love] |
|||
* "Who’s Gonna Rock You" → "Tokimeki Twenty" [Exciting twenty], re-named after 20-year-old Bernie. |
|||
* "Chemistry" → "Natsu-wa Sixteen" [Sixteen - best suited for summer], changed to feature 16-year-old Coleen as lead vocal. |
|||

|||
* "How Do I Survive" → "Love Koi-shikute" [So in love] |

The Nolans |
---|
The Nolans (billed as The Nolan Sisters before 1979) are a group of sisters from Ireland, who enjoyed success as a pop vocal act in the United Kingdom in the 1970s and early 1980s. The group, best-known for their 1979 song "I'm In The Mood For Dancing", continued to be active until 2005 with varying line-ups and had sustained success in Japan. Several of the sisters have pursued solo careers in acting and television presenting.
Early career
The sisters became popular performers on variety programs on British television during the 1970s and released several records featuring their versions of various popular songs.
In 1978 they released the covers LP 20 Giant Hits, which reached #3 on the UK album chart. They also supported Engelbert Humperdinck on a successful tour around the United States, and came fourth in the the UK Eurovision selection contest |A Song For Europe with the Hawaiian-flavoured "Harry My Honolulu Lover." The group was subsequently signed to Epic Records. It was around this time that Denise left the group to pursue a solo career. She was replaced with the youngest member of the family, Coleen (born 12 March 1965).
The Epic years
The period during which the group were signed to Epic was their most commercially successful. Their first Top 40 single ("Spirit, Body and Soul") was issued in 1979 and followed by the album The Nolan Sisters.
At the end of 1979, the group released the disco-flavoured single "I'm In The Mood For Dancing", which became their signature tune. It reached #3 in the UK and became a success all over the world, particularly in Japan (where the group would remain popular for many years, eventually selling more than 9 million albums[citation needed]). The single was taken from their Nolan Sisters album, but marked their first release under which they were simply billed "The Nolans". Shortly after this Anne left the group to have a baby, making The Nolans a four-piece.
Success continued into 1980 with the singles "Don't Make Waves" (#12) and "Gotta Pull Myself Together" (#9). These tracks were included on the 1980 album Making Waves, which spent more weeks on the UK chart (33 in total) than any other Nolans release.
Subsequent singles on Epic failed to chart. The compilation album Altogether (UK#52) ended their association with Epic.
By this stage Anne had rejoined the group, which operated as a five-piece until 1984 when Linda left to marry the group's ex-tour manager Brian Hudson, and to pursue a solo career. She was nicknamed the "Naughty Nolan" after launching her career with a near-naked publicity shot[citation needed].
The Nolans achieved success in Europe, Australia and New Zealand but their biggest market was in Japan, where "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" reached number one. They are famous for outselling The Beatles in Japan[citation needed].
Post-Epic and Japanese success
The group's work in the latter 1980s mostly consisted of cover versions of popular songs (their Epic label albums had generally consisted of some covers plus some original songs). The covers album "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was released on Towerbell Records in 1984 and became their final UK Top 40 album. They appeared as guests on the second episode of the 1987 comedy series Filthy Rich & Catflap, playing themselves in a blackmail plot and performing "I'm In The Mood For Dancing".
Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s the foursome continued to perform together as well as concentrating on their own solo projects. They remained popular in Japan (with the four-woman lineup of Bernie, Anne, Maureen and Colleen) , signing a six-album deal there with Teichiku Records[citation needed] and recording three new albums purely for the Japanese market: Playback Part 2, Tidal Wave and Hottest Place On Earth. Much of their material from this period consisted of covers of Japanese pop songs with English lyrics.
From 1999, the line-up consisted of Maureen and Anne, together with Anne's daughter Amy and her cousin Julia Duckworth. Their act largely consisted of cabaret performances throughout Europe and Japan. The group disbanded in 2005.
Post-Nolans careers
All the sisters have continued to work in show business, pursuing careers in acting and musical theatre. As an actress, Bernie had prominent TV roles in Brookside and The Bill, and has toured in a number of stage shows. Coleen works as a television presenter, notably on This Morning and Loose Women. She has appeared regularly on the latter since 2004.
The original line up of The Nolans (minus Denise) reunited in August 2007 to perform "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" on Loose Women. The band said that while there were no firm reunion plans, they would "never say never" to the prospect.

Other title changes included "Yasashiku Love Me" '(translation: love me tenderly) for "Don't Love Me Too Hard" and "Love Koi-shikute"(translation: so in love) for "How Do I Survive".[citation needed].
