The Springfield Celts Rugby Club is a Division III rugby union team based in Springfield, Illinois, United States. It is currently an At-Large Independent Club.

History

The Springfield Celts Rugby Club was established in 1975. The team was created by Dan Peters. He is also credited for starting another team in Hillsboro,IL. Dan played rugby well into his 50's and still be seen on the field leaving young guys grabbing for air.

Over the years the Celts have created a tradition of hard hitting rugby often taking the best of teams out of their game plan. This tradition has produced several tournament trophies and union victories. The legend of the "Green Jersey" has haunted the Midwestern region for many years. The young players hear of the stories of destruction and victory and continue to wear the Green Jersey with pride.

A Fallen Teammate

Dustin Ryan Cowan, 28, of Springfield died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at his residence.

He was born on Aug. 11, 1979, in Springfield to Ronald and Lynn Roberts Cowan.

Dustin was a 1997 graduate of Glenwood High School and received his bachelor's degree in TV and radio production from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2002. He was employed as a customer service representative for AAA Insurance.

Dustin also known as “Pork Chop” had played for the Celts for the last few years. He was known as a lumbering runner that was difficult to be tackled or stopped. Tackling Dustin was like trying to tackle a full size pick-up truck. He was showing good signs of improvement with every year he was in rugby. Dustin primarily played front row for the Celts playing both Loosehead and Tighthead Prop. He was also co-chairing the position of Field Chairman. He took on his duties with great joy and responsibility. Dustin was not only teammate, but a brother to all of us on the Celts. He will be missed by all of us.
