Sri City is located at about 55 Km north of Chennai on NH5 along the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu States of India. It is a business destination for global companies to establish Manufacturing, Services and Trading operations in India.

This Integrated City spread offers the benefits of a Special Economic Zone and also a Domestic Tariff Area. Sri City Special Economic Zone is the largest private sector SEZ in South India. Besides Industrial Zones, all supporting Social Infrastructure including Residential, Schools, Hospitals and Lifestyle amenities are being developed.

Name

Sree or Shree or Sri or Shri is an Indian honorific prefix. It is a title derived from Sanskrit and is applicable to people and Hindu gods. The name ‘Sri City’ is inspired by renowned temple towns in the region, Sri Kalahasti and Sri Perambadur. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre , India’s Satellite/Rocket launching centre is located at Sri Harikota, on the eastern side of the Pulicat lake which separates Sri City and the Satellite launching station. The famous Tirumala (Tirupati) the abode of Lord Sri Venkateshwara (aka Srinivasa, Balaji) is also located near this new development.

Location

A 55-km drive from the metropolitan city of Chennai in South India, Sri City has proximity to the commercial centre of Chennai and connectivity to ports and airports. Sri City is in close proximity to the large talent pool of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh with easy access to ancillary suppliers necessary for business operations in both the states.

Lifestyle at the City

Climate

The region enjoys moderate climate. The maximum temperature in summer is 37°C and the minimum temperature is 23°C. There is no great difference in temperature during winters, with a maximum of 31°C and a minimum of 18°C. Average humidity is 74%. The region has two distinct monsoons – a mild southwest monsoon and a more vigorous northeast monsoon. The average rainfall for the past 25 years in the region has been 1305 mm per year. Language

Situated on the border of two states, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, both Tamil and Telugu are widely spoken and understood in the area around Sri City. Most people understand English, a secondary language.

Demographics

Sri City is located in Chitoor District. The Revenue Village/Ward wise Population according to Census 2001 for Chitoor District was 848607 Households with a total population of 3745875. The number of literates in Chitoor District according to Census Of India 2001 – Population Census are 2176990.

Educational Institutions

A total of 39 professional colleges are present in Chitoor District with 17 engineering, 12 medical, 2 law colleges. In addition, there are 52 graduate level colleges with 28745 scholars and 142 junir colleges with 80905 students ( Source - MROs of Concerned Mandals). The number of high schools in Chitoor District (2004-2005) is 750 with 248171 students.

Tamil Nadu has -

252 Engineering Colleges, 189 IT education institutes, 202 polytechnics, 526 Industrial training institutes (ITI).

80,000 + Engineers and over 3,00,000 Science, Commerce and Arts graduates pass-out annually.

Andhra Pradesh has

240 Engineering Colleges, 272 general colleges, 103 polytechnics, 72 government Industrial training institutes (ITI).

Nearly 86,000 Engineering students graduate annually. About 250,000 Science, Commerce and Arts students graduate annually.

Transportation

Air: The nearest airport is at Chennai – Chennai international airport, at a distance of 75 kms to the south of Sri City. The Tirupati international airport too is just 75 Km away, and is to the North of Sri City.

Rail: The nearest railway station from Sri City is at Tada, half a Km away. Sri City is well connected by rail with the important towns and cities within and beyond the state from the Chennai Central Station 65 Km away. 40 suburban train services plying to and fro Sri City everyday.

Road: Travelling to Sri City is made possible by number of buses (TNSTC, APSRTC and other private transport providers), and taxis.

Near by tourist centres There are a lot of places of tourist interest near Sri City – Tada waterfalls, Pulicat Lake, Sri Kalahasti, Sriharikota, Kalki Bhagwan Oneness temple, Tirumala (Tirupati) to name a few.
