Harley Pasternak (born August 6 1974) is a Canadian personal trainer, public speaker and author best known for the 5-Factor Diet, a popular diet and fitness lifestyle.
Education
Pasternak holds a Masters of Science in Exercise Physiology and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Toronto, an Honors Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Western Ontario and American College of Sports Medicine and the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology.
Career
Don't beat yourself up about not doing long workouts. Do things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking your car further from the entrance. When it snows, get out and shovel.
Pasternak got his start by educating himself in kinesiology, nutrition and exercise physiology. He got introduced to Don Carmody, a major film producer in Canada, helping Carmody to lose 70 pounds. Carmody in turn referred Jim Caviezel to Pasternak to get in shape. After getting "dramatic" results from working with Stephen Dorff. Pasternak had just four weeks to make Dorff plausibly look like he was recently released from jail and had been working out for six years.[2]
Pasternak developed the 5 Factor Diet that advocates eating five meals a day, each of which must include five components (lean protein, carbohydrates low to moderate on the glycemic index, 5-10 grams of fiber, healthy fats and a sugar free beverage).[3] His 5-Factor Workout requires a minimum of only 25 minutes of five-minute cycles, five times a week.[4] He never weighs or measures clients.[5]
Pasternak is a popular speaker throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil for organizations such as: The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Town Sports International, International Health and Racquetball Club Association (IHRSA), Club Industry, Proctor & Gamble (ThermaCare, Oral B), Unilever (Slim-Fast), Precor, Department of National Defense, The Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology, the Canadian Health Food Association, Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine, Can Fit Pro, University of Toronto, and York University.
Pasternak's first book, 5-Factor Fitness (Putnam, 2005) was a number one top seller in its category at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com. Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and German editions have also been released. Hs second book, 5-Factor Diet (Meredith, 2006) made The New York Times Best-Sellers list.
