Javier Patiño Lachica (born 14 February 1988) is a Filipino professional footballer who plays for Buriram United in Thailand, as a striker. He represents the Philippines at international level.

Early life

Patiño was born in San Sebastián de los Reyes, Community of Madrid, Spain, to a Filipina mother.[1]

Club career

Patiño played his first four seasons as a senior in amateur football, representing local sides Alcobendas CF and UD San Sebastián de los Reyes. In the 2011 summer he moved straight to the second division, signing a three-year contract with Córdoba CF.[2]

In his first year with the Andalusians Patiño scored eight goals in 35 games, notably netting the games' only goal against SD Huesca (away),[3] UD Las Palmas (home)[4] and Recreativo de Huelva (away).[5] On the last day of the January 2013 transfer window he was loaned to fellow league side Xerez CD until the end of the season,[6] but had his link rescinded on 9 March, being then sold to Buriram United of the Thai Premier League.[7]

Patiño marked his debut for Buriram with a brace, in their 6–1 thrashing of Songkhla United FC.[8]

International career

Juani told me [that] it would be a good experience. My mother was very emotional. It's always been her hope that we reconnect with family and relatives who we haven't seen for a long time. What I learn in Spain I will try to impart to the team. I didn't imagine [joining the Azkals] last year, but I'm here to help.

— Patiño, on his decision to play for the Philippines[9]

The Philippine Football Federation were reportedly notified of Patiño through Juan Luis Guirado, who was also born in Spain and an international footballer for the Philippines. In late 2012 he was reported to be applying for citizenship of the Philippines, to open the possibility of playing international football for that country.[10] He successfully obtained his Filipino passport just in time for the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup qualification tournament which took place from 24 to 26 March 2013 in Manila, and made it into the final 23-man squad,[11] also receiving compliments from national team head coach Michael Weiß, who stated, "Patiño is definitely a top player but it is a team sport and it takes time to connect with the other player. We should give him time, we know that we can expect something but perhaps not the best yet".[11]

On 24 March 2013 Patiño scored twice in his debut for the Philippines, an 8–0 win against Cambodia.[12][13] Two days later he played the full 90 minutes against Turkmenistan, helping his team win 1–0 and qualify for the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup.[14]
