The 2014 STP 500 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race that was held on March 30, 2014 at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia, United States. Contested over 500 laps on the 0.526 mile (0.847 km) oval, it was the sixth race of the 2014 Sprint Cup Series championship season.
Report
Background
The track, Martinsville Speedway, is a four-turn short track that is 0.526 miles (0.847 km) long.[5] The track's turns are banked at eleven degrees, while the front stretch, the location of the finish line, has a zero degree banking.[5] Like the front stretch, the backstraightaway also doesn't have a banked surface.[5] The race consists of 500 laps, which is equivalent to a race distance of 263 miles (423 km).[5] The defending champion is Jimmie Johnson.
Prior to the race, Lynda Petty would die of cancers involving the brain and Central Nervous System Lymphoma. During an age were women where prohibited from serving in the NASCAR garage, Mrs. Petty asserted herself and started a wives' auxiliary to support those who married NASCAR professional stock car drivers.[6]
Practice and qualifying
There were three practice sessions scheduled for the Cup Series but only the first practice session took place. The other two were cancelled to due rain. Denny Hamlin was the fastest in the only practice session.[7] Kyle Busch won the pole after setting a lap time of 18.998.[8]
Race
Joe Nemechek managed to break the all-time Sprint Cup Series record for the most last-place finishes; breaking a record set by J.D. McDuffie during his tragic death at the 1991 Budweiser at The Glen racing event. A single-car crash with rookie Parker Kligerman caused Nemechek's car to struggle until it was driven to the garage on lap 310 of 500. Nemechek's constant start and park performances has caused him to beat McDuffie's old record in only 655 races.[9]
A grand total of 14 cautions were made; causing race speeds to slow down for a duration of 92 laps. Kurt Busch would defeat Jimmie Johnson by a time of .263 seconds; with the average speed of the winner being 72.176 miles per hour (116.156 km/h). This race took three hours, thirty-eight minutes and thirty-eight seconds to successfully conclude itself.[10]
Results
Qualifying
*David Reutimann and Landon Cassill both qualified 36th (the final guaranteed starting spot) but Cassill's team was higher in owner's points. Reutimann failed to qualify as a result as his team was lowest in owner's points of those who qualified outside the top 36.
