The fifth season of Pretty Little Liars, based on the books of the same name by Sara Shepard, was renewed on March 26, 2013, and will premiere on June 10, 2014 on ABC Family.[2] Like the second season, the season will consist of 25 episodes, including a special holiday-themed episode, instead of a halloween episode which will be written and directed by King, and will be the 13th episode of the season.[1][3][4][5] It will also contain the 100th episode and will be written by showrunner I. Marlene King.[6] King also said on Twitter that they will do something special for the episode.[7] Shooting for the season began on March 24, 2014.[8] The promotional poster was released on May 28, 2014[9]

Overview

The fifth season will deal with the girls, and how they have to adjust to the new world where Alison is in.[2] Alison's return will be a problem for the couples, where there will be a love triangle between Emily, Paige and Alison. I. Marlene King informed in an interview that Tyler Blackburn's character Caleb will meet Alison DiLaurentis for the first time saying: "Alison and Caleb have never met. That's a pairing we've never seen. He comes in knowing about this persona, this mythical figure Alison, and now he gets to meet her for real"[10][11] In an interview with King it was revealed that Ian Harding was asked back to the fifth season, meaning his character Ezra will be back. King also told about the clues Ezra has gathered saying: “In all of his surveilling, Ezra’s found out some information that will help the girls truly unmask ‘A’ — so some good will come out of all this pain.”[12]

Casting

On March 12, 2014, it was announced that Tyler Blackburn will be returning as a series regular on the show after leaving halfway through the fourth season for the sister show; Ravenswood, and will return in the 100th episode.[13][14] It was reported that in the season premiere, a beloved character will be in great danger because of the casting of a paramedic and two surgeons for the first episode.[15] It was reported that Kenneth DiLaurentis will return, King said “Her father comes home and wants to take her with him”.[16] On April 3, 2014, it was reported that Chloe Bridges was cast as Sydney, the newest member on the swim team who will befriend Shay Mitchell's character Emily. She will appear in multiple episodes, the first is the third episode of the season.[17] Tammin Sursok will return in the 100th episode. Her character has not been seen since the ninth episode of season four.[18]
