Pune techie murder case refers to the attack and murder of a 24 years old Muslim techie named Mohsin Shaikh[1] in Pune.[2] There were communal tensions in the area after derogatory photographs of Shivaji and Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray were uploaded to social media during which 200 buses were vandalised and 180 people arrested.[2][3][4] The uploads were made through foreign proxy servers traced to sources in India.[2][5][6] Home minister R R Patil said authorities know the identity of those that uploaded the offensive images and that Mohsin was innocent and died in the riots. His family was given Rs 5 lakh compensation by the state.[6]

Mohsin Mohammed Sadique Shaikh,[3] an IT professional working as an IT manager in a private textile firm was attacked and killed on Monday 2 June 2014 while returning after prayer from Unnati Nagar.[3] According to a senior police officer[who?], "Mohsin wasn't attacked because he was taken to be the one who had uploaded an offensive FB post, but simply because he sported a beard and was wearing a Pathan suit which marked him out as a Muslim".[3] Police have arrested several people including the leader[7] of Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS), a Hindutva group, for their alleged role in the incident.[8][9] Before this, on 31 May about 50 Muslims attacked a Hindu Nikhil Tikone and his friend because he was having a Tilak on his forehead. [10][11]

Protests were organised by a number of NGOs demanding justice for Mohsin Shaikh and compensation since he was the only bread winner for his family.[12] Several organizations including Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Students' Federation of India (SFI), All India Democratic Women's Association, 'All India Secular Forum', Communalism Combat, Minorities Federation, Jan Sanskriti Manch and National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM)) gathered at Azad Maidan on June 5, 2014.[13] Muslims in that area showed solidarity by patrolling the area ensuring no Hindu household is attacked by any mob.[14]
