Cyprus will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, Austria. The Cypriot entry will be selected through an untitled national selection, similar to the Sweden national selection, Melodifestivalen.[1] The selection is organized by the Cypriot broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) and MAD TV.[2][3]

Background

Prior to the 2015 Contest, Cyprus had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest thirty-one times since its first entry in 1981.[4] Its best placing was fifth, which it achieved three times: in 1982 with the song "Mono I Agapi" performed by Anna Vissi, in 1997 with "Mana Mou" performed by Hara and Andreas Constantinou, and 2004 with "Stronger Every Minute" performed by Lisa Andreas. Cyprus' least successful result was in 1986 when it placed last in 1986 with the song "Tora Zo" by Elpida, receiving only three points in total. However, its worst finish in terms of points received was when it placed second to last in 1999 with "Tha'nai Erotas" by Marlain Angelidou, receiving only two.[5] In 2012, Cyprus selected Ivi Adamou to represent the country in Baku. Adamou achieved the 16th place in the final making it their best result since 2004.[6] In 2013, Cyprus failed to qualify to the final after selecting Despina Olympiou to represent the country. In October 2013, the withdrawal from the 2014 contest was announced, the broadcaster cited the public opinion regarding the 2012–13 Cypriot financial crisis and budget restrictions as factors that influenced this decision.[7]

Before having an official confirmation from the Cypriot broadcaster, it was reported that Cyprus would be returning to the contest for the 60th anniversary.[8][9] On 31 May 2014, it was reported by London Greek Radio that CyBC was preparing a national selection.[10] It was officially confirmed on 14 July 2014 that Cyprus would be returning to the contest with a national selection being held to select their thirty-second entry.[1]

National selection

Although the national selection was officially confirmed in July 2014, there were rumors regarding the selection since late May 2014.[8][10] The selection was announced along with the confirmation of the country.[1][11] A trailer for the selection was first seen on 14 July 2014.[12] The selection consists of four phases and is set to take place in January 2015; however, the name and the dates of the selection are yet to be announced.

By September 2014, CyBC had received applications from more than 100 singers including Valanto Trifonos (Cyprus, Greece), Dimos Beke (1993 and 2002), Philipos Konstantinos (2002) and Constantinos Christoforou (1996, 2002, 2005).[13][14] Christoforou will not be participating in the competition as a performer but as a composer with the performer being his brother, Stefanos Christoforou.

Format and rules

The rules and the submissions forms were available through the broadcaster's website.[15][16] All the rules of the Eurovision apply, such as the 3-minute rule and the song's originality. Additionally, it is required that the singer and the songwriters are of Cypriot origin. Each composer or performer is able to submit only two entries. The deadline for the submissions is on 5 September 2014. The selection's format is similar to the format of Melodifestivalen, the Sweden national selection.

There are four phases: the auditions, the semi-finals, the second chance and the final.[17] During the auditions, all the accepted entries will be performed. The auditions will be pre-recorded and the songs will not be heard fully on the televised show. The jury, which will consist of 3 to 8 members, will judge each performer and the performer has to receive positive votes from more than the half of the jury panel in order to get through the next phase.

The second phase, the semi-finals, will be live events. The number of the semi-finals is still to be determined. The contestants that got through will perform in order to get a place in the final of the selection. The results are determined with a mix of jury and televoting–both will be awarding their 12, 10 and 8 to 1 points according the voting results of each. The first place will go directly to the final while the second place will go to the second chance. The second chance will be using the same system as the semi-finals. Two of the second chance songs will get through the final.

The final of the selection will consist of the winners of the semi-finals and the second chance. The voting will be the same as the semi-finals and the second chance. The two most voted songs will proceed to the second phase of the final.

At Eurovision

Cyprus will compete in one of the two semi-finals on 19 or 21 May for a place in the final on 23 May. The semi-final where Cyprus will compete will be determined during the semi-final allocation draw, possibly in January 2015.
