Shenmue III (シェンムー3) is an upcoming action-adventure video game directed by Yu Suzuki and developed by Neilo and Ys Net for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4. It follows teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki in his quest to find his father's killer in 1980s China. It is the third game in the Shenmue series, which Suzuki plans to cover at least four games.
The first two Shenmue games were developed by Sega AM2 and released for Dreamcast in 1999 and 2001 respectively. The original Shenmue was the most expensive video game ever developed at the time, with an estimated production and marketing cost of $47 to $70 million USD, though some of this development also covered Shenmue II and groundwork for future Shenmue games. Despite attracting a cult following, the games did not recoup their development cost and Shenmue III spent years in development hell.
In June 2015, Suzuki announced he had secured the Shenmue rights from Sega and launched a Shenmue III Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. It met its initial target of $2 million USD in under eight hours, making it the fastest Kickstarter campaign to reach that amount.
Premise
Following the events of Shenmue II, Ryo Hazuki has reached Guilin in search for his father's killer, Lan Di. There he met Ling Shenhua, a mysterious girl who previously appeared in his dreams. After learning the legend of her village which has foretold a united path between them, they embark on a new journey which will reveal their shared destinies.[1] Shenhua and Lan Di will return, with a new antagonist Niao Sun.[1]
Development
Shenmue III spent years seeking funding, having been started and cancelled at least twice. In August 2005, Kikizo.com stated that Shenmue III would be a compilation of the first and second installments plus the final chapters.[2][3]
Fans petitioned for Shenmue III, including a campaign by videoGaiden.[4] Sega of America president Simon Jeffrey stated that the game was not in development; Jeffrey added that it was "definitely one of the most requested fanboy games."[5][6] In January 2010, Sega said that though sales were a concern, they would "love to do it" given the opportunity.[7]
In November 2010, Sega West president Mike Hayes said: "While at present we have no plans for the franchise [on next-gen consoles]...the Shenmue legacy ignites a lot of passion among fans. Never say never."[8] On December 8, 2010, Suzuki discussed the concept of what the in-game speech interaction would be like. Suzuki did not confirm those concepts as being official, instead presenting them as being a theoretical mechanic.[citation needed] On March 2, 2011, Suzuki appeared at the Game Developer's Conference 2011 and said about Shenmue III: "I think SEGA will let me make it…it's a matter of budget…we have to make it in an affordable way."[9] On January 4, 2012, Suzuki suggested that he could secure the rights to Shenmue from Sega.[10]
Crowdfunding
In March 2013, news arose that Suzuki was attempting to crowdfund Shenmue III, with talks about console exclusivity as another potential method to fund the project.[11] During a presentation on the franchise at the 2014 Game Developers Conference, Suzuki stated that he would like to make Shenmue III with the "right opportunity". In an interview the following day, he said he was researching Kickstarter.[12] In May 2014, the Shenmue trademark was renewed by Sega.[13] On September 28th 2014, Suzuki said: "Sega is not a problem at all. For Shenmue III, we need to define a specific budget and if I can gather enough for it, Sega will allow me to do it."[14] During the conference, Sony Computer Entertainment approached Suzuki about Shenmue III as it was one of the most requested titles in their "Building the List" initiative.[15][16]
On June 15, 2015, a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign was announced during Sony's E3 2015 press conference. The game is being developed for PlayStation 4 and PC using Unreal Engine 4, with a tentative release date of December 2017.[1][17] It raised $1 million USD in 102 minutes, earning it a Guinness World Record for the fastest game to raise $1 million in pledges on a crowdfunding platform.[18] The campaign met its initial funding target of $2 million USD in under eight hours, making it the fastest campaign to reach that amount on Kickstarter.[19][20][21] Sony said it would be willing to provide some additional funding for marketing the PlayStation 4 version of the game.[22] Masaya Matsukaze and Corey Marshall, the original Japanese and English voices of protagonist Ryo Hazuki, will reprise their roles for the game.[1][23] The game is being developed at Neilo, featuring a team composed of key members of the original game's development, while Suzuki obtained the rights to make the game from Sega, who published the previous games.[24] The Kickstarter's current stretch goals go up to $5 million, which adds a character perspective system,[1] something Suzuki said he really wanted to do.[25] Stretch goals include a "rapport system" (at $3.2 million), which governs changes in Shenhua's actions depending on Ryo's conversations with or actions towards her, and a "character perspective system "(at $5 million), which will highlight different characters' personalities.[26] According to Yu Suzuki, if it raises $10 million, "a much larger, completely open world will be yours to explore."[27]
