SoundCloud rap is a music genre that originated on the online audio distribution platform SoundCloud.[2] It is characterized for its simple beats, emo moods, and lyrics that range from the braggadocious and nihilistic to sex and drugs.[2] It is not the same as mumble rap.[3][4]

Media attention

Music critic Jon Caramanica of The New York Times opined in a 2017 article that SoundCloud rap "in the last year has become the most vital and disruptive new movement in hip-hop".[5] Complex magazine mentioned SoundCloud rap in an article about rappers on SoundCloud,[3] and Spin noted that the SoundCloud company has not been able to leverage the popularity of SoundCloud rap to improve its financial problems.[6]
