Quillette is an online magazine founded by Australian writer Claire Lehmann. The publication has a primary focus on science, technology, news, culture, and politics.

History

Quillette was launched in October 2015 in Sydney.[1] The website drew significant public attention on August 7, 2017 after publishing the responses of four scientists (Lee Jussim, David P. Schmitt, Geoffrey Miller, and Debra W. Soh)[2] to James Damore's controversial memo "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber".[3][4][5] The website was temporarily shut down by a DDoS attack following publication of the piece.[6][7]

Reception

Quillette has been praised by a number of well known scholars and public intellectuals[8]; it has been called "superb" by the evolutionary biologist and writer Richard Dawkins,[9] "real journalism" by the psychologist Jordan Peterson,[10] and "one of the most stimulating & original new web magazines" by Steven Pinker of Harvard University.[11]

Ideology

In an interview with Psychology Today, Lehmann said that Quillette provides "an alternative to the blank slate view... very common in left-leaning media."[8]

Media Bias/Fact Check News categorizes Quillette as "slightly to moderately conservative in bias."[12] In an article for The Outline, writer Gaby Del Valle classifies Quillette as "libertarian-leaning" and "academia-focused."[13] In an opinion piece for USA Today, columnist Cathy Young describes Quillette as "libertarian-leaning".[14] In an article for PJ Media, writer Toni Airaksinen describes Quillette as a "libertarian publication."[15] Writing for The Guardian, Jason Wilson describes Quillette as "a website obsessed with the alleged war on free speech on campus."[16]

Accuracy

Media Bias/Fact Check News categorizes the factual accuracy of Quillette as "high" adding that "all articles are well sourced and mostly free of loaded language."[12]
