Revision as of 16:45, 31 March 2021
The 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials were initially slated to be held in Pennsylvania at Penn State University but relocated to Fort Worth, Texas, at Dickies Arena. This was due to a variety of factors, including COVID-19.[1] The dates were originally scheduled for April 4–5, 2020, but have since been rescheduled from the 2 to 3 of April, 2021.[2]
The winners of the Trials will compete for the United States at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, if their respective weight has been qualified.
Categories
There are three categories for Wrestling at the Olympics; Men's Freestyle, Women's Freestyle, and Greco-Roman.
Men's and Women's Freestyle
Freestyle wrestling normally has wrestling in seven weight classes ranging from 50 to 120 kg at age 20+. It also includes ages 18–20 wrestling in eight weight classes ranging from 46 to 120 kg (101–265 lb).[3] However, the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics only have six (6) weight classes per category. These include; 57 kg, 65 kg, 74 kg, 86 kg, 97 kg, and 125 kg for men and 50 kg, 53 kg, 57 kg, 62 kg, 68 kg, and 76 kg for women.[4] Certain collegiate wrestling tournaments also gain qualification to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. This includes the NCAA Division I, Wrestling Championship. In collegiate style wrestling there are 10 main weight classes currently open to college-level competition, from 125 lb to the Heavyweight division that ranges from 183 lb to 285 lb.[5] For the list of additional qualifying events see Qualified Athletes below.
Greco–Roman
Greco–Roman wrestlers ages 18 to 20 wrestle in eight weight classes ranging from 46 to 120 kg. Athletes age 20+ wrestle in seven weight classes ranging from 50 to 120 kg.[3] Also, all of the age categories and weight classes can be applied to freestyle wrestling.[6] Once again, the 2020 Summer Olympics have but six (6) weight classes. These include; 60 kg, 67 kg, 77 kg, 87 kg, 97 kg, and 130 kg. Greco–Roman differs from freestyle in that only men may enter the competition.
Qualified athletes
There is no requirement to have a certain number of athletes entered to compete within any given weight category at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. An athlete who has qualified to compete through any of the methods outlined below, may declare any weight category they choose to compete in, regardless of the weight category in which they have qualified. This allows athletes who have qualified at a non–Olympic weight to still compete. Each athlete must declare their weight category just prior to the scheduled weigh‐ins.[7] Athletes who have qualified multiple times will be marked in each event they qualified.

- Challenge Tournament–(single elimination)-Part One of the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials will determine who will wrestle the 2019 World Championship Olympic weight medalist in Part Two. The finals of Part One will be a single match unless there is a delay to Part Two, in which case Part One will be the best‐of‐three matches. All best‐of‐three matches occur on day #2 of the Olympic Trials.
- Championship Series–(best‐of‐3 match final wrestle‐off)-In Part Two the winner of Part One will face the 2019 World Championship Olympic weight medalist (provided they are competing in the same Olympic weight category in which they won their World Championship medal) in a series of best‐of‐three matches.
Parts One and Two of the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials will be held over two days, except when a request for delay is granted for Part Two. The winner of Part Two shall be USA Wrestling’s designee for the 2020 Olympic Games. However, if a delay was granted and if for any reason the 2019 World Championship Olympic weight medalist does not compete, or is not able to compete in Part Two prior to June 30, 2021, the winner of the best‐of‐three matches in Part One shall be declared the winner of Part Two. They will be the USA Wrestling’s designee for the 2020 Olympic Games.
If the winner of Part One does not compete, or is not able to compete, in Part Two (whether or not in the case of a granted delay), the 2019 World Championship Olympic weight medalist shall be declared the winner of Part Two and will be the USA Wrestling’s designee for the 2020 Olympic Games.[6]

The champions of the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for an Olympic qualified weight, will head to the 2020 Summer Olympic Games as the official wrestling team for the IOC of the United States.[11][14]The United States qualified fifteen wrestlers for each of the following classes into the Olympic competition. These places will be contested by the 3 winners of each unqualified Olympic bracket, in the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
