Just Wondering

hello j millburn just wondering if you are from Cumbria how do you know about the Horton hospital Banbury?

I have a habit of going through the new articles. I know nothing about the hospital, I was just Wikifying the article a little I suspect. What edit did I make? J Milburn 16:28, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I just had a check, I added the medicine-stub tag, and corrected some grammar. I didn't actually add anything to the article. I usually don't read much of the article when I open it, I just skim over and make it look nice, add needed tags and nominate for deletion if need be. Just my own little way of contributing to Wikipedia! J Milburn 16:33, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Hi J Milburn - thanks for you help on my article. Not sure how this Talk works yet but appreciate your efforts.

Kind Regards

Dave Andrews

J Milburn - thanks for that - in fact I had figured it out eventually.

How do you set a category - some editors wanted to delete the article - do you know why - > I think becasue no references which I have now provided I hope.

Kind Regards

Dave Andrews.

PS - happy to be your friend - what does that entail?

J Milburn - thanks for that - I am slowly figuring it out! The article in question was the one on information routing groups - I think because it didn't have any verification - which I've now added I hope.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Dave Andrews

Reference Citing

Greetings, J. Milburn! I just noticed that you had gone back and added a notification that I had not referenced sources on the Ativin - Pills Versus Planes EP article. Since I am new to Wikipedia, I'm just wondering if I need to reference such information as the track listing and release date, or if you are referring to my brief synopsis of the album, noting its different stylistic tone from the others. I certainly would like to make my contributions as helpful as possible and not add anything unnecessary or incomplete.

Thanks! Justin Norman

Fair use image in your sandbox

With regards to this edit: Please do not remove the orphaned fair use tag if the image is not being used in any articles (pages in the User: namespace do not count as articles). Image:Thine Eyes Bleed.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Thine Eyes Bleed.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Chowbok 02:52, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disambig pages and D&D.

Since your contributions seem to be doing a fair amount of this... hmm, how to say this. On one hand, doing work to organize redirects is certainly a laudable goal. However, redirects should go to the most likely usage. People who enter in sabretooth tiger and its variants, for instance, are almost certainly interested in the real sabretooth tiger (that is, the smilodon). Similarly, I don't see how D&D dire animals merits a reference on the Sabretooth disambig page. If we were to apply that low a standard for disambig pages... well, there are lots and lots of games that have sabretooth tigers as random monsters in them as well. Then start thinking of all the fictional references. My understanding of Wikipedia policy is that only reasonably major connections should go on a disambig page.

Not trying to be a scald, but just a general note. SnowFire 01:33, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

references

I've Encyclopedia Britannica, and there short articles are unreferenced. Don't you think it's excessive to ruin the format of such a short article with such an excessive request? Bye! --Attilios 21:13, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can see what you mean, but I think that, with it being such a short article, it should be very easy to source it anyway. People should always provide sources when writing the article, in my opinion. J Milburn 21:15, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing other Wikipedias

Hi J Milburn, I happened to see that you mentioned to another user that other Wikipedias are not valid sources for the English Wikipedia. I'd love to hear more as this rule seems to be diametrically opposed to other Wikipedias' rules (for example the German Wikipedia). Is there something I could read up to find out when it is and when it is not allowed to source another Wikipedia? BTW, how about articles that are just plainly drawing from other Wikipedia articles? Wouldn't it rather violate the GNU license not to mention that such articles are actually using other people's work? Curious to find out more. --Ibn Battuta 00:07, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images

I have tagged a number of images you uploaded:

With the "no source" and "no rationale" tags. We need to have a source and a fair use rationale for using these images if we are going to use them. --RobthTalk 05:31, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, you recently tagged a large number of images I uploaded. However, I am interested to know why you tagged some of them with 'no source' and 'no rationale', yet deleted others straight away. I am confident I can provide information about both factors for all of them, if given some time, but I want to know why some have been deleted straight away. Please reply on my own talk page. Thanks. J Milburn 11:48, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The reason I deleted those other images was that they had been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2006 November 29/Images (I assumed you had been notified of this, but this was apparently not the case). As explained here, we do not have a solid fair use claim to images from the Wizards of the Coast book art galleries, as our use competes with the copyright holder's use. The reason I tagged the figurine images with the no source and no rationale tags instead of deleting them as well is that I believe we may be able to legitimately claim fair use for them; once sources are provided, I intend to get opinions from people knowledgeable about copyright law on whether this would be the case. --RobthTalk 14:25, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Askam and Ireleth-Pier surface-17.12.06.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Askam and Ireleth-Pier surface-17.12.06.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Image tagging for Image:Half-Elf_Hexblade_model.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Half-Elf_Hexblade_model.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

Re: List of Avatar: The Last Airbender Book One episodes

Okay, here's the deal. That page is NOT a Featured List. List of Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes is a featured list, one that was chosen as such several weeks ago after myself and several other members of the WikiProject Avatar: The Last Airbender went through a lot of work following its nomination. The page's creator randomly decided the original list was too long, (load of crap), and cut out practically all of its content before shoving it in the three new pages (originally the page's sections). That's why I feel all three pages he created (the other two can be seen here[1][2]-note the information all comes from the list of ATLA eps) should be deleted immediately. Seems that when you were editing my article on Curley's Atlas Hotel and Baths, you put some stub entry in which wiped out some additions I was making at the same time. Anyway, it's back in now, and I would say no longer a stub.

Tale of Two Brothers

Regarding copywrite on the tale, no it is not copywrited as it is something that was re-edited by me from assembly from four late Victorian sources. Basically I went through to delete all of the thee's and thou's, and change the "Behold!" to "Look" and update the language, without changing any of the original sense of the sessions (not wanting to run foul of the Wiki no personal research view). Is this OK?

Klay World: Off the Table

Hey, thanks for the adding the redirect to the article. How do you do that? What else did you do to my article?

Askam and Ireleth

Hi, just a note to let you know I had a quick read of the Askam and Ireleth article per your nomination for it to achieve GA status.

The article looks good, reads smoothly and is very well referenced - (which is refreshing)! I made a couple of minor adjustments to the article however to aid in its nom process.

I don't think this article would fail GA, but I do have some suggestions (which please understand are my opinion only!), which I think would aid the article further:

  • I'd like to see the opening line to say "Askam and Ireleth is a civil parish made up/consisting of two villages in the county of Cumbria, in northern England." - I think this helps the reader understand the logic then of having these places as a singular article.
  • I also think mentions of the local government reforms are more suited for another section (such as a geo-administrative or civic history section) rather than the lead.
  • "The unique nature of the wide River Duddon estuary and surrounding countryside has made the area a haven for wildlife." - I imagine this is true, but may need a slight tinkering to sound a little less grandiose. It may also be more appropriate to move this into the article prose and replace with something more reflective of the settlement itself.
  • (From the Sport section) - "Thought to be formed in 1879" is designated as needing a source - the article (sadly) cannot pass until one is found, or the statement is neutralised.

I hope you find this feedback helpful. If you are inclined to make the changes I'd be happy to pass the article ASAP. I should add I found the article particularly interesting as I have also nommed a settlement/civil parish with a double name - Shaw and Crompton. I'd be grateful if you would take some time to read through and give feedback/use ideas as appropriate. Best of luck, Jhamez84 12:30, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for the swift reply! Great to see you made the changes to the article I suggested!
The reviewing process normally takes a week or so (depending on the length of the queue), but given I nommed an article some time ago, I have been keeping a close on the list - which is how I came across this article.
Assuming you have contributed to this article significantly for a while, I must congratulate you on it. I'm going to do a more rigorous review of the article (for minor things, grammatical redundancies etc), and then should imagine I can pass this article! Great work! References...

I just created the page Outer Comstock about my neighborhood; c.f. your tag, I'm wondering what kind of references I would use, as it mostly came from my head. No worries, I was just a bit annoyed. Thanks for letting me vent a bit. I have been bitten before by folks on new page patrol who have put legitimate articles and templates up for speedy deletion etc. mere seconds, if not minutes, after they first appear. (This includes several that have been tagged as stubs with the first revision, but put up for deletion because they were short on content!) I understand the need to weed out bad articles soon after they appear, but a bit of good faith should be applied here. I'm not the only editor who likes to save some work in progress to get things started. I can't always work on an article offline to make them perfect before the first save. Thanks for the assistance in this matter. I cannot remove a speedy from an article I created otherwise I would have. Just be sure to check to see if its been tagged properly in the future. I tend to make numerous new pages and tag them with the appropriate stub template just to get them started. If I get the article out, people will know to update it as you can see with this page. Album Source

The Source of the information for the album was having it in my hand and reading the booklet. Perhaps I was mistaken for not stating that. How should I reference it so as to not get tagged again? I don't want to seem pompous declaring every disc I have that others do not (too in their face don't you think?)I have a great many discs in my library that I would like to contribute in some small way. There are many orphan pages that I can help. Thanks. Solonyc 06:26, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Answered. J Milburn 16:21, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have received your answer but I am still troubled. In general I do not feel that searching for a link to a review is a good idea for many reviews have their facts wrong or are incomplete. Also some of the bands I deal with are rather obscure and have no homepages of their own. I feel that in both cases this would be repetitive and actually dishonest since I have the disc in front of me. If I had taken (or in the future take) the information from a website I will of course link to the source. I will be seeking advice from others on this matter on how to continue, if I want to continue. I am now wondering if it is worth the time and effort I was planning to put into this endeavor. Answered, with much puzzlement. J Milburn 22:10, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Since you asked I disagree that it improves the page. I actually think it can take away from it. If I wanted to be very thorough (or snarky) I could cite the booklet, my basement, wall shelf and row. It is kind of like stating "the Earth is round" and then listing a reference to NASA and the Hubble telescope. To me it is a reasonable assumption that if there isn't a link cited that the info came from his/her knowledge of a disc in the persons possession. I would not recommend that for every subject on here but this might be an exception. In the same way I can state on a page "I have a black car" without sourcing my garage. I do not expect people to lie or make things up on something so easily verified and corrected, perhaps I am naive. I agree with you that there are many facts that should be sourced (sales and awards, reviews, etc...) but there are some pages that I have seen where there are so many bookmarks on a page all you see are dots of blue when you read them. Over-sourcing can be a deficit too. The pages I have made are really basic starting points that I hope to expand on in the future. There will be more references I hope. I seem to have hundreds of discs I can add or edit here. As to other points you brought up many times it is hard to know who writes the booklets if they aren't credited. Also I did not see a reference to this specific instance of sourcing the disc in the page you directed me to other than for track length which I don't even use the booklet for as my catalog program does that for me. Perhaps I missed the reference.
I am sorry to belabor the point but I am new here and I'd like to not be singled out. I do have strong opinions as far as music is concerned. I have other thoughts on other related subjects but I will spare everyone that now. Cheers Solonyc 23:24, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps Solonyc can be persuaded to add <ref>Album X, CD liner.</ref> to the edits he makes? Xiner (talk, email) 00:14, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Though we disagree on this point I do respect you knowledge and point of view and would not call your opinions "ridiculous". I think it best we leave it here. I will do no more harm. Solonyc 01:58, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
