Revision as of 17:54, 26 December 2021
The Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World anime television series is an adaptation of a light novel series written by Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrated by Shinichirou Otsuka. The adaptation was announced by Kadokawa in July 2015.[1] The series is directed by Masaharu Watanabe and written by Masahiro Yokotani, with animation by the studio White Fox. Kyuta Sakai is serving as both character designer and as chief animation director.[2]
The 25-episode series aired from April 4, 2016[a] to September 19, 2016 with an extended 50-minute first episode. It was broadcast on TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, TV Aichi, and AT-X.[3][4] The series was simulcast by Crunchyroll.[5] The series has been licensed by Anime Limited in the United Kingdom.[6]
A series of shorts featuring chibi style versions of the characters, titled Re:Zero − Starting Break Time From Zero (Re:ゼロから始める休憩時間(ブレイクタイム), Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Break Time) and produced by Studio Puyukai, aired on AT-X after each episode of the series, starting on April 8, 2016.[7][8] It was replaced by a new series of shorts, titled Re:Petit − Starting Life in Another World from Petit (Re:プチから始める異世界生活, Re:Puchi kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu), which began airing on June 24, 2016.[b][9] Crunchyroll acquired the streaming rights to both shorts.[10]
The first of two OVA based on the series was released on October 6, 2018, and the second OVA was released on November 8, 2019.[c]
On March 23, 2019, it was announced that a second season was in production.[11] The cast and staff reprised their roles for the second season.[12] The second season was announced to be in a split-cour format, with the first half airing from July 8 to September 30, 2020, and the second half airing on January 6, 2021.[13] Before the second season premiered, an edited version of the first season aired from January 1, 2020 on AT-X and other channels, with the edited version recapping the first season through one-hour episodes. It also included new footage.[14] The second season of Re:Zero Break Time was announced and it would air on July 10, 2020 live on Kadokawa's Youtube channel.[15]

1 | "Memory Snow" | Masaharu Watanabe | Masahiro Yokotani | October 6, 2018 | [24]
Shortly after the Mabeast incident, Subaru arrives back to the Village looking for a spot for his date with Emilia, where the kids show him a hidden flower patch, which he feels is perfect. Over the next couple days, the weather starts getting surprisingly colder, forcing the date to be postponed, though Emilia doesn’t appear to be bothered by it. Subaru then wakes up to find the mansion completely frozen over, and eventually learns the cause to be Puck, currently in his period of exerting all of his excess ice magic, with Emilia and Beatrice helping confine it just to the mansion. So as to avoid freezing to death, Subaru suggests staying outside where the weather’s normal, but is halted by the rain. He tries to think of other options to stay warm or quickly release the rest of Puck’s magic, but is foiled each time. Later that night, realizing the rain will eventually turn the area outside the mansion into snow, he develops a new plan to pass the time, to host a Snow Festival, inviting the Villagers to join in and take part in a snow sculpture making competition. While everyone has fun with the snow, Subaru tries to convince a reclused Beatrice to join as well, who eventually agrees with Puck’s pushing. The winner is chosen to be Petra’s mecha snow bunny (which Subaru helped create), getting Subaru’s bag of Corn Potage as the prize. Afterwards, the mansion residents celebrate with an afterparty featuring food and booze, in which Emilia and Rem get drunk. While hanging with Beatrice, he talks about the constellations in the stars revealing he got his name from one of them. While the rest of the group watch in awe at the snow spirits, Puck releases his last remaining energy, sharing the snowfall with the rest of the people in the Capital. As Beatrice heads back inside, Roswaal pokes fun at her for not drinking because of Subaru's request, claiming it has nothing to do with him. As the snow starts to melt, Emilia and Puck reflect on Subaru’s wish to host the festival again next year, though also contemplating if he’ll still be with them by that time. She then meets up with Subaru outside as they head to the flower garden for their date.
2 | "The Frozen Bond" Transliteration: "Hyōketsu no Kizuna" (Japanese: 氷結の絆) | Masaharu Watanabe | Masahiro Yokotani | November 8, 2019 | [25]
Shortly after her date with Subaru, Emilia reflects upon her history and original relationship with Puck. In the past, Emilia saves a family from a Snow Blight, but they fearfully run away after the father's arm is accidentally frozen by her magic, as well as being scared off from her resemblance to the Witch of Envy. Emilia lives in a tree in a snow-filled forest all by herself, so as not to scare the people, performing her daily duties such as maintaining the "snow sculptures" and mapping out the area, as well as occasionally heading into the village to restock on supplies. Puck frequently visits with the two having fun enjoying each other's company. One day a group of men approach Emilia, saying that the village committed a crime by trading with a demi-human, and that she must give up her body to them or else they'll be punished; she reluctantly agrees, revealing her true face. Just then, a Snow Blight appears and goes to attack everyone, which Emilia eventually defeats. Once again, her magic goes out of control and starts to effect the men, but Puck appears to fix it, scaring the men off. Waking back up, Emilia returns to the village to find the merchant telling her to never return, and she in turn reveals her identity to him and tells him for no one to ever enter the forest. The leader of the men, Chap, tries to find some way to get revenge on Emilia, but fails when Puck threatens him again; a bright red orb suddenly appears and consumes Chap in flames. Puck convinces Emilia to make a contract with a lesser spirit, which she agrees too. That night, Puck is confronted by the red orb, which turns out to be Melakuera the Arbitrator, saying that the frozen forest is unnatural, though Puck claims he's the cause of it. Emilia, accompanied by her new spirits, discover a large black mass, which turns out to be the venom of a Black Serpent, starting to attack the forest. Puck tries to put an end to it, but is halted by Melakuera, leading to a battle between the two. With the black mass heading toward the village, Emilia tries to divert it away, getting engulfed by it, though her magic and the spirits help her to completely freeze it all. Just then, her spirits are all destroyed by a red spirit, which turns out to be Chap, who's become a new vessel for Melakuera to act out his revenge. Emilia calls on Puck for help, who defeats Chap overwhelming him with ice. Puck then reveals to Emilia that she is a half-elf, leading her to believe that she is the cause of the frozen forest, when Melakuera appears to confirm this to be the case, trapping her in his flames. Puck rebukes that the black mass attack was orchestrated by Melakuera just to draw Emilia out, with him claiming it to be "fate". Puck then asks Emilia to form a contract with him; she's afraid to since she's worried he'll leave her, but he insists he never will, so she accepts. Transforming into his true form, the two beasts duel it out. With Puck the victor, him and Emilia watch the sunset as she asks why he formed a contract with her now, saying that he was never allowed to do so before because of his "oath", and felt that it was worth breaking now. He then decides to start calling her "Lia". Back in the present, Emilia sees Subaru cleaning up the snow sculpture of their family as it starts to melt. Subaru comments that there's no such thing as snow that doesn't melt, which causes Emilia to feel elated, thinking back to her forest, with Puck silently agreeing. |

They read through the report and recalled the time they had rescued Otto. Anastasia entered the room and sees them reminiscing what happened during that mission. Ricardo recalled that she and the Pearlbattons had been tied up before in the past, making Anastasia feel nostalgic about that time. The conversation ends as they all head to the meeting that they appointed for their next job.
