On the morning of January 9, 2022, a high-rise fire tore through the Twin Parks North West apartment building in the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. At least 19 people were killed, including nine children, and at least 63[1] other people were injured, including 32 with life-threatening injuries.[2][3][4][5][6]

It was the deadliest fire in New York City (apart from 9/11) since the Happy Land nightclub fire in 1990, which occurred nearby.[7][8]

Building

The 19-story residential building, Twin Parks North West, housed 120 units.[9] It is located on 333 East 181st Street near Tiebout Avenue and was built in 1972 as part of a state program to provide affordable housing.[10][11][9] The building is currently under private ownership, and was purchased by LIHC Investment Group, Belveron Partners and Camber Property Group along with other Bronx buildings in early 2020. Camber’s co-founders include Rick Gropper, a housing adviser to Mayor Eric Adams.[7]

The building housed a largely Muslim population, with many immigrants from The Gambia.[12] While there were no fire escapes on the exterior of the building, there were interior stairs,[13] a configuration common in high-rise buildings.[7]

Fire

Just before 11:00 a.m. EST, a malfunctioning electric space heater ignited a fire that quickly took hold in a duplex apartment on the third story of the high-rise, though the cause of the fire remains under investigation.[14] Fire commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said the duplex apartment's door had been left open, fueling the blaze and allowing heavy smoke to spread through the entire building.[10][15]

Firefighters and emergency services began responding within three minutes. First responders found victims suffering from severe smoke inhalation on every floor of the building, some of them in cardiac or respiratory arrest.[16] Residents told reporters that it was common for the alarms to trigger in the building, leading many to initially believe that there was no fire or delay evacuation due to confusion. However, many credited others in the building for noticing the fire and spreading the alarm via phone calls and knocking on doors.[13]

Their main challenge was the exceptional amount of smoke that extended the entire height of the building. Around 200 firefighters responded to the fire. Weather conditions complicated the situation and New York City Fire Department (FDNY) officials stated it took over an hour to extinguish the fire.[2][17]

Victims

At least nineteen people were killed, including 9 children, and at least 60 other people were injured, including 32 with critical, life-threatening injuries.[2][3][4][5][6] Excluding fires that took place at nursing homes, this is the third-deadliest residential fire in U.S. history, surpassed only by a 1979 fire in New Jersey that killed 21, and a 1982 fire in California that killed 24.[18]

Investigation

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro announced that the preliminary cause of the fire seemed to be due to a space heater that was being used to supplement the buildings heat. Nigro also told reporters that there were smoke alarms throughout the building, but there is an investigation around the buildings fire doors and alarms.[13]

Aftermath

For those killed in the fire, Mayor Eric Adams announced they will work to ensure Islamic funeral and burial rites would be respected and they would seek out Muslim leaders to help with the process and aid residents. Any residents who reach out for assistance would not be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Adams also announced.[13]
