The Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis is a hypothetical confrontation between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China. There is some speculation that the visit of US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in August 2022 could or has resulted in one.[1][2][self-published source]

As a Hypothetical

The term "Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis" has also been used to refer to a future crisis in the Taiwan Straits. It has been noted that most of the factors that led to the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis still exist.[3]

As a reference to the events of August 2022

Nancy Pelosi originally intended to travel to Taiwan in Aprilof 2022,[4] but was delayed due to COVID.[5] She rescheduled the trip to August as part of a wider Asian trip. Biden attempted to discourage her from visiting Taiwan,[6] while the Chinese government warned her as well.[7]

In response to Pelosi's visit, the People's Republic of China reacted in several ways. They announced four days of military drills,[8] which were even more provocative than the military drills from the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis[9] and which were seen as very concerning by some other countries.[10] They also announced a variety of economic measures against Taiwan.[11]
