Campaign

Template:Spoiler The single player is modeled after the Normandy breakout, where the British, Canadian, Polish, and American forces pushed into the city of Chambois, France, also known as the Falaise Gap.

Mission 1

There are 14 playable campaign missions. The first mission takes place in Saint Lo. The player (Nichols), is in a small camp when a soldier named Private Huxley approaches. Nichols completes a short tutorial and proceeds getting into a truck with his squad and moving into the fight. Mortars begin landing around the truck where he eventually crashes and is dragged to safety by fellow soldiers and lifted over a wall into a cemetery and proceeds through the city.

Mission 2

In the second mission, Nichols and his squad move out to Saint Germain-Sur-Seves, a wet wooded area. He begins making an initial charge with the squad, some tanks, and a hundred or so other troops against a ridge funneling in Axis troops. He proceeds on with the squad around the side and continues clearing houses, barns, and woods.

Mission 3

In the third mission, the player (Doyle), become a British SAS operative. He is dropped with a fellow soldier and the major behind enemy lines to meet with the Maquis. The plane is shot down and lands in the woods, where a German nearly kills him but a Maquis operative kills the German first. He proceeds on meeting with the Maquis and destroying German positions.

Mission 4

In the fourth mission, Nichols and the American squad are sent into the town of Mayenne to save several bridges. When Pvt. Huxley, the soldier tasked to disable the bombs, is injured, Sgt. McCullin takes control and disarms the bombs, sacrificing his own life.

Mission 5

In the fifth mission, the player becomes a Canadian (Cole). His squad moves down a road of Germans and finally disembarks from the truck, right in front of an MG42 nest. He moves on to take several Flak guns and assault a factory. The factory is then assaulted by the Germans. HIs squad valiantly defends the factory, hopelessly, with it apparent that he will die. Heroically, his squad prevails through the ruthless German onslaught to take the key factory.

Mission 6

In the sixth mission, Doyle, his small squad, and a few Maquis assault a massive German fuel plant. He proceeds through the huge plant and eventually plants bombs on the gargantuan fuel silos. He and his group get in their jeeps and blast through companies of Germans through winding roads through the plant as it explodes and barely make it out. After he makes it away from the explosion, he discovers that his Major didn't make it out, in which old tensions come about between the Maquis and Doyle's friend, Corporal Kieth-the Scot.

Mission 7

In the seventh mission, the player becomes a Polish tanker (Bohater). He and his battle group move through the countryside when they encounter the infamous German tanker, the Black Baron. They chase after him, as he runs, the squad is left behind and Bohater pursues him, using many tactics along the way. After a long time, he gets behind him as he doesn't know, and blast him to pieces, along with air support.

Mission 8

In the eighth mission, Nichols, and his American squad (led by newly promoted Sergeant Dixon) move into a forest supposedly cleared by the French, but actually was packed with Germans still. He goes on to discover a lost battalion of engineers, who had been massacred with only one remaining. He proceeds to clear the forest.

Mission 9

In the ninth mission, Cole and his Canadian squad proceed to the Laison River, where they clear a short area and move on to clear a large manor. they move forward and blow up three heavily defended Flak guns, and move on to man a mortar, and blow up a parking lot of German cars. they move on to another large manor, and clear it. Then, they destroy a powerful anti-tank gun watching the road through which tanks need to move.

Mission 10

In the tenth mission, Nichols moves into a heavily assaulted city. He moves through many buildings and clearing them. He eventually reaches a house with the 2nd story floor partly blown out. A large amount of German grenadiers come to the roof and drop grenades around him and his nearly helpless squad. He eventually proceeds to clear more houses, then defends a tavern from a large road funneling in German forces.

Mission 11

In the eleventh mission, Doyle moves into a loose town in the beautiful French countryside to rescue his major, who is being held hostage. He finds and releases him, then moves on to 3 different houses to release 3 Maquis hostages. He and his group move into the town square and have a long bloody fight with German forces being funneled in all around them. One of the main Maquis characters is killed.

Mission 13

In the thirteenth mission, Bohater starts off getting in a Sherman tank at the base of Mount Ormel, which is being ruthlessly assaulted from all sides. He blows up several tanks, his tank is eventually blown up. He and his squad desperately retreat farther up the mountain, praying for the Canadian forces to show up, who are supposed to be their relief. Bohater sees one of his close fellow squadmates killed. Private Baron, the Canadian radio op. comes. Bohater and he spot targets for the radio, eventually retreating even farther and farther up the mountain, nearly at the peak. Bohater defends one spot for a while, and eventually retreat up to the peak where there is a large house and a field hospital. Rudinski and Baron are eventually killed. Then mass amounts of German forces begin blasting uphill towards Bohater's position. He then jumps into a trench and defends it until the Canadians arrive.

Mission 14

In the fourteenth mission, Nichols is in the city of Chambois. He first must defend himself from a German attack. Then, a smoke grenade appears, and he must repel the attack. He retreats to a rally point, and then goes into a church. He rolls down a gravel pile, and then must clear the area of Germans. He moves to a new rally point. He rescues Pfc. Guzzo from an MG42, and as Dixion puts Guzzo down, he is shot in the back. Dixon dies shortly after. Nichols then moves to high buildings, protecting a man with a bazooka. The tank is destroyed, and the player moves on. After that, he must clear an entire square of Germans. He moves to a broken down house that he must clear. He snipes three mortars with a Springfield, and then moves into the open. 2 armored cars appear, and he must destroy them. 6 German tanks appear(in groups of three), and he has a choice of using either a bazooka or a Pak 43 anti-tank gun. After air support bombs the remaining Germans, the mission ends. After that it shows a ending with Guzzo on a truck giving the same speach that McCullin said in the begining. Template:Endspoiler

Multiplayer

In addition to the single-player campaign, Call of Duty 3 features a wide range of multiplayer modes for players to participate in - each allowing up to 24 Players in a single match, three times the limit that impeded Call of Duty 2 on console platforms. This is only in the online mode. All team game modes feature the soldiers of the Allied nations (Specifically the US forces only. Canadians, British SAS, and Polish forces are not featured in MP) versus those of the Axis (Germany). The Wii version of Call of Duty 3 does not feature a multiplayer option.

As with many other Xbox 360 games, Call of Duty 3 divides its multiplayer aspect into Player and Ranked matches. Player matches allow players to invite other players into their games, but do not contribute points toward the leader board or unlock achievements. Ranked matches pit the player with and against teams of random players, and contribute towards player points and allow players to unlock achievements.

Game Modes

The game features six game modes, five of which are team based, and one individual:

Game Mode Description
Battle Traditional Deathmatch-style game-play - the only individual game mode. The score at which the game ends depends on the number of players, and decisions of the game host, but is by default set to 20, the more killed, the better.
Team Battle Two teams (Allies and Axis) battle, the only objective being to eliminate the opposing team. The score at which the game ends depends on the number of players, and decisions of the game host, but is by default set to 100.
War There are five fixed flags around the map, teams must gain control of one before moving onto the next. Allies start with two flags, Axis start with two flags and a neutral flagpoint in the center. Team who takes all five flagpoints first wins. On smaller maps, there are only three flagpoints to be taken.
Capture-the-Flag (CTF) Each team has a flag at their base. Teams must infiltrate the enemy base and bring the enemy flag back to their own base. Generally, the first team to capture the enemy's flag 5 times is victorious. In the event of a tie, the team with most kills will be the winner.
Single CTF Teams spawn on either side of the map. Flag spawns in center. Objective is to successfully take the flag to the opposing team's base. Generally, the first team to take the flag to the enemy base 5 times is victorious.
Headquarters A radio spawns at a random location on the map - teams must possess the radio. The team who successfully possesses the radio establishes a base there. Teams must either defend or attack the base. The team who established a base at the radio gains a point for each second they remain in control of the base - if the opposing team destroys the base, they gain ten points. Normally, the first team to 300 points wins.

Classes

Moving away from the game-play style of previous Call of Duty games, where players would simply select a team and weapon, Call of Duty 3 multiplayer bears closer similarity to that of Battlefield 2, in that players select a class of soldier and a team, the chosen class defining both the player's weaponry and the unique abilities that he or she will hold over the other classes. There are seven classes of soldier to choose from, with different weapons (although of similar specifications) depending on which side the player fights. Every class has a sprinting action used instead of the normal binoculars used when the usual binocular button (during single player mode) is pressed.

Rifleman - Members of this class are adept at medium-short ranged combat, favoring a Rifle to take down their enemies. Their secondary weapon is the rifle grenade. At rank 2, they can also use smoke grenades.

Light Assault - Members of this class start with a submachine gun. The ASG class spawns with sticky grenades, which stick to anything that they are thrown at. Members of this class can move quickly and can plant Mines as well.

Heavy Assault - Members of this class start with an assault rifle and fragmentation grenades, and have the ability to place Mines.

Medic - Members of this class have the unique ability to revive fallen comrades. They are also equipped with a shotgun for close-range combat as well as smoke grenades.

Scout - This is the standard sniper class. Members of this class are equipped with a sniper rifle and fragmentation grenades. They are also capable of calling an artillery strike by using their binoculars.

Support - Members of this class start with a Machine Gun that can be set up on the ground and other stable surfaces to rain bullets on opponents from a stationary position. They can also drop ammo packs to refill allies' weapons. They use fragmentation grenades.

Anti-Armor - Members of this class start with the Anti-Tank weapon (Rocket Launcher) and sticky grenades. They can also drop ammo packs to aid allies.
