Al Marmoom (Arabic:المرموم) is a community of the Emirate of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Administratively it is part of the Sector 9 and is located in the southern part of Dubai.
Territory
The territory of the community occupies an area of 27.3 km2[1] which develops in a semi-desert non-urban area in the area Dubai Central.
Al Marmoom is located in the southern area of the intersection of Lehbab Road (E 77), separating it from the community of Al Yufrah, and Dubai Al Ain Road (E 66), separating it from the community of Umm Al Mo'meneen.[2]
As mentioned, this area is semi-desert and essentially uninhabited, however it hosts some important sports facilities:
- The Sevens. It is a Multifunctional sports complex consisting of eight rugby/soccer pitches, six cricket pitches (3 grass and 3 sand), four tennis courts, a basketball court, a grandstand and ancillary structures that comply with international standards.[3]
- Dubai Camel Racing Club. It is a sports association founded in 2008 by the Emir of Dubai Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to preserve and disseminate information and knowledge of the ancient sports of camel racing and related culture and heritage . The club owns the largest camel racing circuit in Dubai called Al Marmoom Racing Track. The club operates the Dubai Camel Hospital, the first veterinary hospital in the world that treats exclusively camels.[4]
In addition to these plants, the Al Marmoom heritage village is located in the area. It is a permanent structure that allows visitors to explore the Emirati way of life through crafts, cuisine, dance and music. The village annually hosts the Al Marmoom Heritage Festival, a cultural event for the dissemination of Emirati culture whose main event is the camel racing held at the nearby Al Marmoom Racing Track.[5]
Contrary to what the name might imply, the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve is not located here, but about 80 km southwest.
The area is not currently served by the Dubai Metro. However, there are two surface lines (buses 66 and 67) which run along the Dubai Al Ain Road and stop at Jazira Poultry Farm not far from the Dubai Camel Racing Club.[6]
