Christopher Chahn Bahng (born October 3, 1997), better known by his Korean name Bang Chan (Korean: 방찬), is an Australian singer, songwriter, and music producer. He is the leader of the South Korean boy group Stray Kids, debuting under JYP Entertainment in 2018. He is also a member of 3Racha, an in-house production team and sub-unit of Stray Kids.[1]
Life and career
Bahng Christopher Chahn (Korean: 방찬; Bang Chan) was born on October 3, 1997 in Seoul, South Korea and was raised in Sydney, Australia.[2] His younger sister is Hannah Bahng, an Australian singer-songwriter and content creator, and he has a younger brother, Lucas.[3] He attended the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts where he trained in ballet and modern dance. At the age of 13, he passed the 2010 JYP Entertainment Global Audition held in Australia and moved to South Korea to become a trainee. He graduated from Chungdam High School.[4][5]
In 2016, he formed a hip hop crew called 3Racha with fellow JYPE trainees Seo Changbin and Han Jisung under the pseudonyms CB97 (Bang Chan), SPEARB (Changbin) and J.One (Han). They uploaded their first mixtape, J:/2017/mixtape consisting of seven tracks onto SoundCloud.[6]
In 2017, a JYPE survival show was announced to launch a male idol debut project headed by Chan.[7][8] Bang Chan was tasked with selecting trainees for forming his group. The members themselves came up with their own group name Stray Kids (shortened to skz) as well as the slogan (Step Out), fandom name (Stay) and fanchant (Stays everywhere, all around the world, you make Stray Kids stay).[9][10] Chan officially debuted as the leader of Stray Kids on March 25, 2018.[11]
Songwriting and musical style
Bang Chan was promoted to a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) in 2023 along with fellow 3Racha members Changbin and Han.[12] He also became the youngest K-pop idol to enter the Top 10 on the KOMCA chart with 137 credited songs.[citation needed]
