Sonic Dream Team is a platforming game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is developed by Hardlight and published by SEGA for Apple Arcade. The game was released on December 5, 2023.

Gameplay

Sonic Dream Team is a 3D platformer. The playable cast includes Sonic, Amy, Tails, Cream, Knuckles and Rouge.[1]

The game is touch controls enabled. When playing on iPhone or iPad, only touch controls are available, but the game has controller support on Mac and Apple TV. Touch screen controls can be configured in the menu screen.[2]

Synopsis

Doctor Eggman has discovered the Reverie, an ancient device capable of making dreams come true. Upon learning of the doctor's plans to conquer the world using this object, Sonic and his friends travel through the villain's dreamscapes to thwart his ambitions.[2]

Development

Knowledge of a new, untitled Sonic mobile game was made public on July 22, 2022, when Sega Europe sent out a listing on the jobs board for the site Gamesindustry.biz, searching for applicants to potentially serve as the lead artist for the game.[3]

According to Creative Director Dan Rossati, the intention of the gameplay was to "make a game that allowed players to get into an exhilarating flow state," comparing playing the game to, "skate parks and bobsled runs with rounded corners" that is designed to maintain the player's flow as they run through each of the zones.[4]

When asked about his involvement, Sonic Frontier writer Ian Flynn teased he was somewhat involved with the game, though couldn't talk about it. When the game's announcement trailer was finally released, he confirmed it and revealed he was writing for the game. He also indicates that this game is considered canon to the overall franchise.[5]

The announcement trailer was released on November 1, 2023, with the music composed by Tee Lopes. A subsequent trailer with the game's opening animation was released on November 22, 2023, with animation by Powerhouse Animation.[6]

Reception

Sonic Dream Team received generally favorable reviews, with some critics even saying it is the game that "3D Sonic games fans have been waiting for for a long time".[7]

Several reviewers praised its aesthetics, engaging goals and game feel, while also calling the story "bland" and the game very short.[2][8][9]
